Breakfast with Rosie Huntington-Whiteley

British actress and model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley has modelled for the likes of Burberry, starred in Transformers: Dark of the Moon and, most recently, snagged a role in George Miller’s coming Mad Max Fury Road. The 27-year-old was in Australia last week as an ambassador for ModelCo to launch its natural skincare collection. She talked to me about landing the Mad Max role and what’s off limits when it comes to social media.

Tell me about your role in Mad Max: Fury Road and how you landed the part?

I can’t talk about my character but I auditioned for the part a few years ago now and heard nothing! Then 18 months later I got a call from my agent saying they are picking up the film again and George Miller would like me to fly down to Australia to audition. It was my first trip here and four weeks later I was in Namibia making the film. It was a whirlwind, a really fast experience for me. To get to work with George was so fantastic, he is so lovely, and to be part of an iconic Australian franchise has been really fun. But it was not a walk in the park! There was nothing about making that movie that was glamorous or plush! It wasn’t like a day of modelling. It was rough and hard and we were fighting against the elements, but it was a really great experience.

Were you a fan of the Mad Max films prior to your audition?

Yes, I have been a big fan of the films for a long time. They are my favourite costumes of any film ever!

How do you prepare for a role?

It just depends. With Transformers it came around really quick and I worked with an acting coach beforehand, and also had to do a lot of exercise because the shoot was very demanding. I had to do a lot of gym work with a trainer. And then for Mad Max it was interesting because George wanted us to stay out of the sun. He didn’t want any of us to work out, he wanted us to look as natural as possible. So I didn’t work out for six months during the time and we did three weeks of rehearsals in a room with four other girls who I did my scenes with, and so that was part of the process.

What is your fitness routine?

I have worked with an Australian yoga teacher called Claire Greaves who has changed my life. You Aussies know how to keep in shape. I also love Pilates; I go to a place in LA called Ballet Bodies. [Trainer] Andie Hecker, who is also a friend of mine, used to be a professional ballet dancer so she knows how to keep my body long and lean. I also love high-energy gym sessions like [with trainer] Tracy Anderson – it’s super tough but I feel great when I leave! LA is geared towards healthy living, so my days “off” are spent horse-riding, surfing, being on the beach, going for great walks and swimming.

What do you do to relax?

I find massages a really important part of my routine to help my body relax and unwind. Vinyasa Flow yoga and Pilates, which I practise almost every day when I’m not working, are also incredibly relaxing for my mind and body. I love to be outdoors in the nature; walks on the beach or hikes in the canyons in LA are always relaxing. I go with a friend and take my dogs and we catch up and have a laugh. I also love to take the time to go visit my parents in Devon back home in England. I grew up in the countryside – it’s truly one of the most beautiful places in the world to me. We hang out at home and cook. I love to go walking in the fields with my mum, we always have good heart-to-hearts!

What is your favourite indulgence?

I cook a lot of English comfort food. I love to cook roast chicken with all the trimmings. For pudding I love a crème brûlée.

Why Natural Skincare?

It is important to look after our skin, especially in my field of work where I am required to often wear heavy makeup. Since using the ModelCo Natural Skincare Range, my skin glows and I am just as confident bare faced as I am with a full face of makeup. The natural range means I’m not putting unnecessary chemicals onto my skin, and it is being treated to a pure form of nourishment.

You must get asked to be an ambassador for so many products. What made you align yourself with the Australian brand ModelCo?

Firstly when [ModelCo CEO and founder] Shelley [Barrett] called me 18 months ago, I was really excited, because I’ve known ModelCo since the very first product – which was the heated eye lash curler. And I remember when it hit the UK and it was a huge thing. And then Tan In a Can is obviously such an iconic product. So I’ve used the products, so that is instantly meaningful for me, and I really loved Shelley from the start. She is a really smart, savvy business woman who I can learn a lot from.

What is the importance of social media in your career?

It has become so massive. It is incredible because two years ago I was very anti it and I didn’t understand it. Instagram hadn’t really taken off. I joined and for me it has been a really enjoyable experience, because I love to be able to let people in from my point of view. There is so much that gets taken out of context, from interviews, photographs that get taken by the paparazzi to tabloids. For me it was a way of me being able to give part of me away honestly, to people who wanted to follow me. I love taking pictures, my world is so visual. I’m travelling all the time and I love being able to share my fun experiences with anyone that wants to listen, so I’m into it. I’m loving it!

What’s off limits when it comes to social media?

I certainly try and keep my private life out of it. There is that fine line, a balance of giving enough away that you do feel like you are opening up and that you are getting a peek into something, which I think I manage to do. But I also think I’m not one to put up pictures of my family or my loved ones. I think that is where I would draw the line. Those things for me are really sacred and it is none of anyone’s business. I want to keep them for myself.

What is your current skin regime?

I like to ensure my skincare regime is simple yet effective, using products that produce real results for my skin. I always start with my ModelCo Gel Cleanser to lift away any impurities- I love the lightweight gel formula. In the mornings I apply my ModelCo Instant Miracle Booster which instantly firms my skin and invigorates my complexion. In the evenings I apply a few drops of ModelCo Rosehip Plus because I love the way my skin looks and feels the morning after. Because travel and makeup are such big parts of my life, my skin is quite sensitive. ModelCo Soothing Day & Night Moisturiser is my go-to moisturiser as it calms and restores hydration back into my skin.

What is your #1 skincare secret?

Hydration is my fundamental rule of skincare. The secret to keeping my skin hydrated and replenished is with ModelCo Replenishing Rose Mist Facial Mist. I carry this in my handbag at all times and give my skin a quick spritz for instant refreshment.

Is the constant travel tough on your skincare routine?

It can be difficult to maintain my skincare routine while travelling and working which is why I love the smart beauty behind the ModelCo Natural Skincare Range. They have all facets of skincare covered in one range which is tailored to my skin type. The Double Sided Cleansing Wipes ensure my skin stays fresh and clean when I’m on the go, while the Day & Night Moisturiser means I can carry just one moisturiser in my luggage handbag. I absolutely adore the ModelCo Rosehip Plus Luxury Face Oil too, just a few drops daily helps my skin to adjust to the climate I’m in which is essential when travelling from my home in LA to other parts of the world.

What are your beauty tricks for travel?

1. Moisturiser. Always carry a face moisturiser in your carryon luggage. 2. Forgo foundation on the flight in favour of a BB. I use ModelCo BB Plus for light, breathable coverage. 3. I love a fresh face with rosy cheeks, it is easy to maintain when travelling with blushes and bronzers. 4. Sleep! And lots of it! 5. Hydration. I always ramp up my fluid intake on the plane.

In the past have you ever suffered from skin breakouts?

I haven’t always had clear skin. It is tough going through high school and entering the modeling industry where your skin is constantly fighting with heavy make up on shoots, long hours and jet lag. Finding a skincare range that actually works and that I can fit in with my hectic lifestyle is such a relief not only for me, but my skin too.

What foods do you eat to keep your skin looking young?

I absolutely love green smoothies! I always try to incorporate celery, spinach, kale and pears to my smoothies along with banana and a bit of almond butter to give it a boost of sweetness. My skin always glows when I start my day with a green smoothie. I’ve also recently cut out a lot of red meat, not for any reason, I just didn’t crave it anymore. And since I cut it out I have noticed how much lighter and better I feel.

What beauty essentials are always in your bag?

I am obsessed with eyebrows!! I feel good when my eyebrows are groomed so I love ModelCo Eyebrow Designer Eye Kit; As I live in sunny LA, sunscreen is very important to me and I use ModelCo Daily Face SPF 50+; Burt’s bees wax lip balm – I like to keep my lips soft and subtle and Burt’s Bees is a great natural balm; blotting papers and ModelCo Shine Ultra Lip gloss in Rosie (of course!). My ModelCo Instant Miracle Booster is my skin savior, you will rarely find me without it. I work long hours and often have to wear heavy makeup which can cause my skin to become dull. Instant Miracle Booster brightens and invigorates my skin, it is part of my daily routine.

What are the 5 mistakes that you have learnt about skincare?

1. Always, always remove your makeup before bed. ModelCo Double Ended Facial Wipes simplify my skincare routine and are perfect for when I am shooting on location and am running low on time. 2. I used to over exfoliate my skin before I learned that I was stripping its natural oils. I’ve learned that investing in a quality exfoliator like ModelCo Exfoliating Cream Facial Scrub and applying no more than 2 – 3 times a week will remove dead skills and brings out the best in my skin. 3. Not to be afraid of oils. The thought of applying oil on my skin used to frighten me, now I embrace ModelCo Rosehip Plus Luxury Facial Oil. It keeps my skin looking youthful and masks any sleepless nights. 4. Never underestimate the power of hydration and rest. Water and sleep are two of your skin’s purest form of skincare. However, when I’m lacking in either of this my Instant Miracle Booster plays large part in keeping my skin glowing. 5. Never leave home without an SPF and apply it regularly throughout the day!

Do you think your diet plays a role in how your skin looks?

Definitely! What I fuel my body with directly reflects the look of my skin. When I’m eating healthily, my skin glows. However in saying that, I’m a big foodie, I love food, so I try not to give myself any restrictions.

Do you take any supplements?

I try and do a lot of my supplements in my smoothies. If I don’t have time for breakfast in the morning, I’ll make a smoothie. Bananas, fruit, a bit of almond butter, to make it tasty. Then I throw my flax oil and coconut oil. I’ll do one with all greens and it tastes delicious.

What are your top 4 tips for glowing skin?

1. I’m a big believer in your skin glowing from the inside out, so maintaining a healthy diet is definitely important. Drinking 3-4 litres of water a day is a lot but trust me it has changed my skin! 2. Implementing a daily skincare regime into your life will ensure your skin is being cared for correctly. Since using ModelCo Natural Skincare my skin has is more radiant, clearer and feels so much fresher. 3. A self-tan not only makes my skin glow on camera, but makes me look and feel more confident. I love ModelCo Instant Tan Lotion in Dark as it gives me an instant bronze sheen that develops darker over eight hours and nourishes and hydrates my skin. 4. Incorporating exercise into my daily routine no matter how big or small instantly revitalizes my skin. When I’m feeling lethargic a quick yoga sequence stretches out my ligaments and gives me a boost.
