Louise Roe is a fashion journalist, TV presenter and now author of the newly released book, Front Roe. Along with her already busy career, Roe also has her own website louiseroe.com where she showcases her always on point style along with sharing her fashion, beauty and lifestyle tips. Roe recently spent some time in Sydney to launch her book (“The café culture, the lovely people, the shopping, even the interior design everywhere, it’s a very inspiring place”) so I decided it was the perfect opportunity for us to talk all things fashion.

On writing and presenting…

“I couldn’t choose [between the two]! I love them both. The adrenaline from hosting a live red carpet is fantastic: you have to think on your feet and you get to meet fascinating people. But deep down I’m a bit of an introvert, so I actually love holing up in my study with a cuppa and writing an article for a few hours.”

On the book writing process…

“I loved it. I was filming a show in Asia at the time, so I would finish a long day on set and set myself a target to finish before bed. Sometimes I actually fell asleep at my desk! But I got to learn so much from the women I spoke to, and researching different subjects in great depth was so interesting. I felt like I was back at uni!”

On finally seeing her book on shelves…

“It’s the coolest feeling ever and quite surreal. When I got the first copy through in the post, I squealed. Writing a book has always been my ambition.”

On the best thing about working in fashion…

“There are so many wonderful opportunities – from the travel, to meeting these inspiring stylists and designers, getting to wear amazing pieces. To be around such creative, focused people is very inspiring. I remember going to my first Alexander McQueen show, in the subway in Milan. He had a reputation for making his sets, music and of course costumes incredibly dramatic. Everything was dark, but super loud: the station was closed, and the models had contact lenses in that wiped out their irises, so all you could see was white. It was like going to a terrifying theatre. I got chills, and had this absolute ‘pinch me’ moment of how lucky I was to be in this industry.”

On her biggest splurge…

“My Chanel bag. My friend, who is a magazine editor, convinced me as apparently they appreciate in value. So I felt like I could justify it?!”

On the building blocks of a good wardrobe:

“It depends on your personal style, but for me it’s skinny black jeans, a biker jacket, denim shirt, oversized cashmere sweater, white tee, white sneakers and black strappy heels. Oh and leather trousers, on the loose side. I love Anine Bing for those.”

On her fashion philosophy…

“Have fun with it – experiment and dont take it all too seriously. And dress for your shape more than anything else, that’s the best way to flatter.”

On the one thing she can’t resist buying…

“Sunglasses. But I do live in LA, where it’s sunny all the time – so I put them on rotation!”

Currently on her shopping list…

“A taupe leather jacket from Scanlan and Theodore.”

On the one store she would max out her credit card…

“FWRD, because they have all the best brands and such a great curation. Same with Matches.”

The pieces she has on high rotation…

“Senso sneakers, a suede fringe jacket from the Outnet, a little black shoulder bag from MeliMelo.”

Her favourite designers…

“Mostly Aussies actually. Dion Lee, Ellery, Bec & Bridge, Pared Eyewear. Also Elodie K for jewellery, Shaffer LA for bags, Tibi for tops, Anine Bing for basics and Madeleine Thompson for cashmere.”

On her beauty essentials…

“I just discovered SKII Mid-day essence which I now take on the plane with me for a spritz – it’s supposed to be very anti-ageing. Skin Inc for serum – which I discovered in Singapore recently, and Kate Somerville for cleanser and eye cream. I head in there for a facial every time I get back off a long flight. For makeup, I love Nars lip pencil in Buenos Aires, MAC Pot of Gold bronzer, and Lancome tinted moisturiser.”

On her style…

“It’s pretty laid back when I’m not on camera. I like neutral and soft colours. LA isn’t formal, so it’s nice to mix tailored pieces with loose denim, a t-shirt or flats. I think Australian girls style that high-low look the best, and I love scrolling through Instagram for inspiration!”
