One of the best parts of my job is the fact I get to chat to so many interesting people on a weekly basis with my Date with Kate column. I’ve done everything from meet my favourite fashion icons to hang out on hotel beds in a bathrobe sipping champagne (read on to find out who this was with) and this year was no exception. Here are some of my faves of 2015…
Kendall and Kylie
It’s always exciting to meet big celebrities from overseas. I watch Keeping up with the Kardashians so I felt like I knew Kendall and Kylie before we’d even met! The day this interview happened, I was also hosting the lunch for the girls’ Forever New launch and when I arrived at the restaurant there were hundreds of people outside hoping to catch a glimpse of them. They arrived with a big entourage and security and it’s only then that you realise how crazy their world must be. The girls were great and exactly how they seem to be on television.
Fashion Bloggers
I always love an excuse to catch up with my girls. We’ve had an incredible year with season 2 of Fashion Bloggers and were able to do lots of travelling together, including our girls’ trip to Dubai. I enjoy meeting up with the girls because it’s like catching up with family because we work so closely together. It was great way to combine work and play!
Lara Worthington
I’ve known Lara for years but I don’t get to catch up with her very often now because she lives overseas. It was great seeing her and hearing about her new life as a mum. We traded parenting stories and it was nice to hear all about how she’s embraced her new life, one of which was starting her brand new beauty brand, The Base.
Dita von Teese
Dita von Teese is one of my all time favourite people to interview. It was the third time I’d interviewed her and she definitely didn’t disappoint. She’s so interesting and intelligent and I’ve never met anyone like her. I remember before I had a chance to meet her I was afraid she might be a bit stand offish because she’s got such a fierce look in photos but she’s always been really down to earth and approachable. When I met her at the Langham hotel in Sydney I turned up in a black dress and she handed me a dressing gown and said let’s get into bed together so I was like whatever okay! We ended up having a girls’ night sitting in her hotel room drinking champagne.
Delta Goodrem
Delta’s such a sweetheart. When I interviewed her she was working on The Voice, rehearsing for Cats and had the number one single in the country yet she still made the time to do my interview and have lunch with me. I can’t even imagine her work hours especially at that time when I saw her. She’s so well known so people would keep coming up to our table to say hello – even the chef wanted her autograph! She was so lovely and gracious to everyone.
Joan Smalls
Joan Smalls was in Australia for the Studio.W launch and I was really excited to interview her as I’m a big fan. She’s one of those people you can’t help but stare at because she’s just so beautiful in person. She was lovely to chat to and it’s always a thrill to be able to interview big names in fashion.
Miroslava Duma
As you’ll know from previous posts, Miroslava Duma is one of my favourite fashion icons. I’ve always been inspired by what she wears and I admire the amazing business and brand she’s set up. Suffice to say I was really excited to meet her. We met down at the Park Hyatt during her visit to Sydney to launch the local version of her site Buro 24/7 in Australia and she didn’t disappoint – I could have spoken to her for hours.
Nicole Richie
I hosted the welcome lunch for Nicole as she was in Australia for the ATC earlier this year. I’ve interviewed her before when I was fashion editor of the Sun Herald and it was great catching up with her again. I’ve always loved her style. I only had a limited amount of time with her but she was happy to speak for longer.
Tash Oakley
I went to Hayman Island for a few days to attend the ModelCo Women of Influence event and Tash was one of the guests. It was the first time we’d met so doing a Date with Kate was a great way to get to know each other. I saw her at the Forever New launch with Kendall and Kylie and it’s always nice to interview someone and become friends and stay in contact afterwards. She’s so young and doing incredible things with her online business so it was really interesting chatting to her.
Erin Wasson
Erin Wasson was really chilled during our interview and was quite real and open when we spoke. Sometimes with the bigger international stars their schedule is so busy that they’ve got back to back commitments but she was happy to chat for longer than the time we had.
