How to find the perfect leather pants

17th June, 2018

Leather pants are always on high rotation for me throughout winter as they’re easy to dress up or down and are also super comfortable and cosy–a must when the weather is cool. Finding the perfect pair of leather pants was a shopping coup for me as I looked high and low for just the right fit and style for my shape for ages and it involved trying lots of different brands until I eventually zeroed in on The One. If you’re currently hunt on a pair for yourself there are a few things to keep in mind…

Be prepared to try on lots of different pairs

Leather pants can be a little tricky to shop for online as the fit is so crucial so I highly recommend trying them on in real life. A pair with panelling is slightly easier to mould to different body shapes so might be a little more forgiving but if you’re after leggings style pants like the pair I’m wearing above then you definitely need to make an effort to fit them in-store. Also try a range of different brands as the cut can vary slightly from label to label.

The more snug leather pants are the better

Ensure that any pair of leather pants you try on are perfectly fitted and there are no wrinkles or gathering of material because if they’re baggy they don’t look right. Look for a leather that doesn’t stretch because while you’re in the store they might be tight but then after a month of having them they can become really baggy at the knees which is not the fit you’re going for. Opt for a leather that’s quite sturdy yet comfortable. They’re meant to feel like a second skin but not so tight you’re in danger of splitting them with the slightest of movements!

Consider high waisted

I always go for a high waisted leggings style because I find my hips keep them up. If they’re low waisted they’re continuously sliding down and it looks really loose and baggy around the waist. Remember you’re after a snug and firm fit. A high waist can also give you a smoother silhouette which means your whole outfit just sits better. Think of it as built in Spanx!

Get them tailored

Don’t be afraid to get leather pants altered. If you’ve found the perfect pair but they’re too long don’t let that deter you. You can definitely get them taken up but it’s just a matter of finding a trusted tailor to do it. Always make sure that your pants hit just at the ankle bone for the most flattering fit.

By ensuring that your leather pants are cropped at the ankle you’ll find it easier to pair them with things like sneakers and flats. This ensures that you see enough skin peeking through between the end of your pants and the shoe—it sounds like a tiny little detail but it really does make a difference to your outfit. It also has the added benefit of elongating you.

Shop around

Good quality leather pants can be expensive, often costing hundreds of dollars. This is why it’s important to find the right pair then shop around to determine whether it may be cheaper to buy it online or in store. Take note of the style you’re after and pinpoint the retailers that stock them then be vigilant about checking on upcoming sales. By going to a little more effort you could save yourself a fair bit of money in the process.

Tell me- will you be shopping for leather pants this season?
