There’s much to love about Australian fashion at the moment, one of them being the label CAMILLA AND MARC. From swimwear to showstopping red carpet dresses, the brother and sister duo have managed to create a label that’s modern, edgy and sophisticated. Here Camilla Freeman Topper shares her musings about what influences her style, her wardrobe essentials and what sets Australian fashion apart…

The epitome of style for me…

My grandmother was a significant influence when it came to style. I have vivid memories of her from my childhood – she was the epitome of chic sophistication.

The Camilla and Marc woman is…

The CAMILLA AND MARC woman is discerning, sophisticated and modern. She is innately chic and appreciates quality and luxury.

What’s inspiring me…

Art, culture and the forces of nature are always constant sources of inspiration for me. For example, the CAMILLA AND MARC Resort 14 collection was based on aerodynamics, weightlessness and gravity whereas our A/W 14 collection was inspired by light and shade.

The best and worst part of designing…

There is nothing quite like the creative freedom of designing a collection. I have the rare luxury of being able to create anything I could possibly want. As such, there couldn’t possibly be anything negative about designing a collection.

The Piculet Coat from CAMILLA AND MARC’S Resort 14 collection

My favourite CAMILLA AND MARC piece…

The Piculet Coat from our Resort 14 collection is a particular favourite. This statement piece is created from a beautiful, Italian raffia fabrication which I discovered whilst in Paris.

How CAMILLA AND MARC has evolved as a label…

Our key message of luxury and tailoring for the modern woman remains the core of the CAMILLA AND MARC label. However, every season, we build on this depending on our current inspiration. As a result, new techniques and fabrications have been introduced as well as accessories, footwear and candles.

Where we’d like to see CAMILLA AND MARC in future…

We are always discovering and exploring new techniques, fabrications, silhouettes and product lines, so we see the CAMILLA AND MARC label offering more and more to its loyal customers. Additionally, we aim to continue our retail expansion both in Australia and internationally, plus grow our online presence through our eBoutique.

Who I’d love to see wearing one of our pieces…

We’ve been very lucky to have so many women wear CAMILLA AND MARC over the years, such as Miroslava Duma, Miranda Kerr, Kate Bosworth and Rose Byrne. We hope to continue seeing modern tastemakers such as Caroline de Maigret and Frankie Rayder wear our designs.

My fashion motto…

Always wear what you feel comfortable and confident in and invest in quality, timeless pieces.

What sets Australian fashion apart…

Australian fashion has a unique ability to give a sophisticated and effortless elegance to any design. This, no doubt, stems from our relaxed lifestyle and really sets us apart on the international scale.

My top 3 ‘can’t live without’ pieces in my wardrobe…

I always revert to those timeless wardrobe essentials that can be the foundation of my look while I experiment with the current season’s trends. My go-to pieces are the classic tuxedo jacket, a statement handbag and a pair of CAMILLA AND MARC loafers.

My favourite trend for spring/summer…

This time of year calls for effortless silhouettes in lightweight fabrics which create soft movements and exude a certain femininity and elegance.

Fashion label Camilla and Marc will open Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia (MBFWA) tomorrow with their 10th anniversary show. I was lucky enough to catch up with Camilla Freeman Topper and Marc Freeman who are the brother and sister behind the label. Over margaritas and tacos we discussed fashion, the pressure to open at Fashion Week and how they devise the coveted seating plan.
