What I Wore: David Jones Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival

9th March, 2019

I flew down to Melbourne this week to attend the David Jones show at the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival (VAMFF). I attend this event almost every year and it’s always fun to spend some time in Melbourne checking out the upcoming trends.

I wanted to keep my look sleek and sophisticated for the show so I couldn’t go past a monochrome colour palette. Dion Lee never fails to deliver when it comes to event attire, especially when it comes to needing a particular piece that’s got a little edge and elevated finishing touches. As such I couldn’t pass up this gorgeous white tank dress with sheer panelling from the range. The weather can be a little unpredictable in Melbourne so I opted to pair the dress with my trusty black Balmain blazer and minimalist Stuart Weitzman heels.

I knew the outfit would need a few interesting accents so the Chloe Nile bracelet bag was the perfect amalgamation of a clutch and jewellery. Whilst my new gold drop astrology earrings from The Slow Mode provided another element that was playful yet elegant.

My week on Instagram

10th February, 2019

I love weeks that serve up a variety of activities and events. I went from a quiet getaway to our family farm (which the kids always adore) to Luke’s birthday and then my very first trip to Tasmania.

I was lucky enough to be invited by David Jones to attend their autumn/winter launch held at the Museum of Old and New Art in Hobart and had an incredible few days. Not only was I able to catch up with friends, but I also had a great few days of eating incredible art-worthy meals (see the dessert below for proof) and was so excited to check out what the new trends will be. I’ve already got a mental checklist of looks and outfits I’ve bookmarked for when we head into the cooler months.

Most importantly I managed to enjoy lots of family time this week celebrating my sister-in-law’s birthday and also enjoying time at the beach with my two angels.

I hope you all have a great week ahead!

What I Wore: David Jones Spring Summer 18 Collection Launch

18th August, 2018

I always look forward to the David Jones Spring/Summer Collection launch every year because it reminds me that gorgeous weather and long balmy days are just around the corner. It also never fails to get me really excited to plan my new season wardrobe as I watch each look come down the runway. I always mentally bookmark a few faves that I know I’ll want to check out in-store later on.

I always enjoy attending events with Luke so I was happy we were able to go to the show together this year. It’s also a fun excuse for the both of us to get dressed up and have the night off! I was in the mood for a big splash of colour and couldn’t go past the below metallic pink skirt by Camilla & Marc. It was a fun focal point to my look and was really in keeping with the mood of the evening. As I was wearing such a modern skirt I wanted to add a classic element so opted for a white button down with a frilled collar and wore the sleeves pushed up to give it a more relaxed vibe. The midi length skirt gave me the perfect opportunity to show off a pair of great shoes and I eventually decided on a pair of ankle strap Tony Bianco heels which had a slight metallic sheen. Adding a touch of Dior to a look is never a bad idea, right? I just loved the below Dior clutch and the bold logo nameplate on the handclasp and thought it was perfect for the night. Rather helpfully the bag can also be worn using the chain strap so it’s great for events that might require me to go hands-free in case I need to hold a glass or grab a canapé.

As always it was another great event by David Jones! Seeing Karolina Kurkova star in the show was a definite highlight as was seeing Aussie models Jessica Gomes and Victoria Lee. I walked away with far too many outfits that I’d fallen in love with and my spring/summer looks are now very much in planning mode.

What I Wore: David Jones Autumn Winter 2018 launch

13th February, 2018

The David Jones Autumn Winter 2018 launch recently took place in Sydney and it had me seriously excited for the cooler weather to arrive. There are so many amazing trends to look forward to and I’m already inspired to start planning my new season looks. In the meantime however I’m making the most of the remaining days of warm weather and roadtesting summer ensembles. I love the futuristic meets sporty vibe of this top and skirt combination by Sportmax, and offset by simple accessories such as my go-to Alaïa heels and Dior bag, it made for the ideal fashion forward look for such a big event.

Date with Kate: Jessica Gomes

13th August, 2017

Catching up with Jessica Gomes in the David Jones food hall, Bondi Junction

Model Jessica Gomes appeared in the Swimsuit Issue of Sports Illustrated every year from 2008 to 2015. She also appeared with Bruce Willis in the recent action comedy film Once Upon a Time in Venice and alongside Owen Wilson in the movie Bastards, set to open late this year. The David Jones ambassador has also recently launched her own beauty brand, Equal Beauty. Gomes, 32, chats to me about how she stays in shape, what she likes to indulge in, and the best advice her actor boyfriend Xavier Samuel has given her.

What are you working on at the moment?

[I’m] back for the David Jones spring/summer launch, which is really exciting; just came back to shoot the new Jets campaign, which is amazing; working on Equal Beauty – we launched four months ago; still auditioning and doing the film side of things.

Jess’ Equal Beauty range has just launched. Photo: @iamjessicagomes

What are some of the spring/summer trends we should expect to see.

Red is a huge trend, so just like colour blocking – beautiful bright reds, florals…

Do you have a favourite fashion piece for spring/summer?

There’s so much to choose from. I would say one of my favourite pieces would be a lace dress from Self-Portrait, or a dress from Ginger & Smart. I always think it’s nice to have a printed dress or a bright colour for your wardrobe.

What does being the face for Jets involve?

I came on with them just recently, so we just launched the first campaign, and we just shot the second … I’ve always been shot in their swimwear, and I always wear Jets in the [David Jones] show as well, so it’s a nice affiliation … [I’m] definitely in with them for longevity, and we’re going to be doing some exciting collaborations in the future.

As a swimwear model, how do you stay fit?

I do lots of things. Right now I’m really into yoga, and I’ve been doing a lot of yin classes … I feel the best when my mind’s feeling good, like mentally I’m feeling sharp, and clear, and great. For me, lately, I’ve been doing a lot of meditation and yoga, and doing lots of long walks; nothing too aggressive.

What do you indulge in?

I love food, I really do. I definitely try and keep it 80 per cent pretty lean, but I’m not too strict on myself. As I get older I’m just like, “You know what, babe? Life’s too short. You deserve whatever it is as long as it comes from a good place.” I’m very much into shopping at farmers’ markets, and eating organic as much as I can, especially in LA … I get my vitamin drips. I do my smoothies. I do my green juice everyday … I have to have my coffee, but I’ll indulge in a really good bowl of pasta, some really good food, especially when I come home … I’m definitely a little more lenient in terms of what I like to eat.

Is modelling or acting your No. 1 focus?

Definitely modelling is still my No. 1. It’s what I do well … I think acting is more a hobby, something that I have there because I really love being creative and telling stories and working on film sets, but modelling has always been my core, and it will always will be what I do.

Tell me about your coming film Bastards.

Bastards is a film with Owen Wilson, Glenn Close and Ed Helms. It’s about two brothers who are on the hunt for their biological father. I shot it two years ago; it just hasn’t come out yet … The studios have been waiting for a right time for it to come out, but it’s a comedy film. It’s really funny; I’ve seen it.

What’s life like in LA?

LA’s amazing, I love it. I just feel so comfortable there. I’ve got my house there, and I’ve got all my things, and I love the lifestyle. I’ve got such a great group of friends there, and I just love it. It’s central to everything. I still duck off to New York if I need to, or it’s one flight over to Australia, or one flight to Europe. I get to dip into the film industry and then dip into the fashion industry too.

Will you ever move back to Australia?

I feel like Australia will always be a place that I come back to. Obviously it’s where I’m from so I feel like my roots are here, but I do feel rooted, also, in LA. I feel like I’ll always do both … I definitely would move back here in the future when I have a family.

Jess and her Equal Beauty products. Photo @iamjessicagomes

What inspired you to go into the beauty business?

I love beauty, and I’ve always been obsessed with cosmetics and beauty products, and I spent a lot of time in Asia, and in Seoul, and in South Korea. I discovered so many amazing beauty cosmetics … I thought it would be amazing to start my own brand, and be able to use the David Jones platform as well, as a way to launch it … I wanted something that I could travel with, that was the whole inspiration. I need an easy routine that I can travel with around the world, for hydration and protection, and fragrance free. I wanted it all natural but still effective, and still medicinal, still a preventative, because I was finding that other products weren’t working for me.

What were the biggest challenges of starting your own business?

The biggest challenges would probably be being resourceful. I think becoming a business person, and becoming an entrepreneur, you realise that it’s just problem solving the whole time … Putting out fires, problem solving, making sure that you’ve got the right team. You’re constantly running into certain things and … you’ve just got to push through. But then the rewarding side of it is seeing the creativity come to life.

Who do you look up to and admire?

I look up to my sisters because they work so hard and run a household. They’ve got three kids each, and I just see how hard they work and how dedicated they are to their family, and they do it all.

Did you ever think when you were younger that you would have the successes that you do today?

I did not think that I would ever be in the position that I’m in now. When I first started out my career in Australia … it wasn’t really happening for me, so I had to go overseas, but David Jones has changed my life … and I’ll be forever grateful for that … I’m just proud that I’ve been able to stay grounded and still be true to who I am, and still keep my integrity with everything that I’ve been doing.

Jess in Sports Illustrated. Photo @iamjessicagomes

How’s everything going with Xavier?

Everything’s going great. He’s amazing. We’re doing really well. He’s just been in LA with me. It’s been wonderful, because he’s obviously in the film industry as well, so we’re really, really good.

Is he a big support to you?

He is, he’s very supportive. He’s been really amazing throughout everything, and just been so great, and I feel really lucky that we’re very supportive of each other’s careers, and we definitely let each other do our things.

Do you find it easier to date someone in the industry, or do you find it more challenging?

It’s important to let one another be your own person and … that you both can have your identity, and both do your own thing, but still have that support and come together, so that’s been really nice … He helps me with auditions. We read lines together.

What’s the best piece of acting advice he’s given you?

He’s like “Don’t second guess yourself.” He’s just like: “You’ve got it” and “You can do it.”

What do you guys do when you have time off together?

We have had the best time in LA because it was the first time that both of us didn’t travel, so we had two months in LA together. We went and saw concerts [and went] on little road trips … we like discovering new restaurants in LA … We go for hikes, we just chill out [and] go see movies …

What’s next for you?

I am heading to Asia. I’m going to Singapore, Seoul and Shanghai for Equal Beauty. We’re going to do some research there, and we’re setting up to launch over in Asia, and then I’m back [in Australia] for a Dior event with David Jones.

4 ways to do denim with a white shirt

28th April, 2017

If there’s one thing that I can’t live without it’s a pair of great jeans. Denim is a workhorse in my wardrobe as it’s so versatile and goes with virtually everything. It’s always a great go-to option for me when I need to get out the door fast as it’s so easy to dress it up or down. Finding the perfect pair of jeans is key and I find it’s important to try on various styles to pinpoint the right fit and style for your shape. When I’m on a mission to find a new pair of jeans I’d rather every style I’m considering is in the one place to make it easier to compare them. I always head to David Jones as they stock great international and local brands and offer up every style you could possibly want which makes it easy to try on a few different pairs and find The One.

Once I’ve found the perfect pair I wear them non-stop and one look I wear to death is the classic combination of a white shirt and jeans. There’s just something so effortless about it and I find it’s simple to pull together a look for different occasions simply by changing the style of shirt I’m wearing. Case in point: below I’ve managed to maintain the same style formula of a white shirt and jeans but achieved four distinctly different looks by adding a few key accessories, wearing a different shirt style, all while wearing the same jeans. Proof that you can pretty much wear denim with everything!

Look #1: Night Out

My new J Brand Maria High Rise jeans are so versatile as the style is quite simple and pared back which means its easy to wear it in a variety of different ways. I’ve teamed this look with an off the shoulder top and added bold accessories such as my gold Gucci heels and choker to glam it up for the evening.

Look #2: Office Wear

Jeans can be office-appropriate. I’ve teamed my jeans with a crisp button down shirt, a pair of loafers and a structured handbag to keep the look polished and work ready.

Look #3: Mum on duty

When I’m out with Sophia and Grace comfort is key so denim is the ideal option. I can afford to go a bit more relaxed when I’m on mum duty so I have opted for a star print white shirt and statement sunglasses to add a bit of fun to the outfit. Sneakers are a must so I can easily run around after the girls and a crossbody bag leaves both my hands free (an absolute necessity when dealing with a toddler and a baby).

Look #4: Relaxation Mode

This would be an ideal look for the weekend. Jeans paired with a peasant top and simple sandals give the look a relaxed vibe and a neutral clutch and straw boater give the outfit some added texture.

Date with Kate: Jesinta Franklin

29th January, 2017

Jesinta and I enjoying delicious healthy treats from her book ‘Live a Beautiful Life’.

Jesinta Franklin (nee Campbell) is a model, TV host and author who won Miss Universe Australia in 2010. Her book, Live a Beautiful Life, was launched late last year and quickly hit No. 1 on the bestseller lists across Amazon, iTunes and Booktopia. The 25-year-old recently married Lance “Buddy” Franklin of the Sydney Swans. Jesinta spoke to me about why she kept her wedding plans private, problems with the paparazzi and her preparations for the upcoming David Jones autumn/winter show.

What are you looking forward to most about the David Jones autumn/winter show?

I always get so excited about the show. It’s such a thrill being on the runway and each year they get bigger and better. This season the launch is being held at the St Mary’s Cathedral forecourt, a beautiful historic Sydney location which dates back to 1821, just years before David Jones’ flagship store was built … so it will be very special. I also look forward to seeing all of the trends and what the fashion is like for the season ahead.

How do you prepare for the show?

I try to stay fit and healthy all year round, however, about a month out, I amp up my training and really focus on eating as healthily as possible: lots of greens and clean, nourishing meals. I do like to indulge, though, so a little bit of chocolate every now and again keeps me sane.

What trends can we expect for autumn/winter?

Leather is a big trend this season in the form of biker jackets – which are a great investment piece – leggings, skirts and boots. Denim is always on-trend but this season it’s all about embellishment and luxe finishes. Florals are back again, but this season they have a ’70s vintage–inspired revival and are loud and playful. The colour of the season is fire engine red, which is sure to brighten up everyone’s winter wardrobe.

Are you excited to walk alongside Karlie Kloss?

I am really excited. Karlie is a renowned international model who has worked with the biggest fashion houses and photographers in the industry. It’s amazing to have her here for the show and I’m looking forward to welcoming her to Sydney.

What inspired you to write your first book Live a Beautiful Life?

I was approached to do a book a few years ago and it didn’t feel like the right time. I started it over 12 months ago and it just felt like the right thing to do, I felt like a challenge and loved the idea of working on something new. I loved every step of the process, I really wanted the book to be an authentic reflection of me and the things I do daily to live a healthy life.

Did you expect it to become a bestseller?

Absolutely not. I got so nervous two weeks before it came out. I was questioning every single page and whether or not people were going to like it. Even the day it launched I was still going over every single part of the book in my mind, hoping it was OK. When it hit No. 1 in my category online it was such a special moment, the 12 months of work had paid off and I was just so glad people liked it. I felt so supported and lucky to have such amazing followers.

Congratulations on your recent wedding. How was your magical day?

Thank you. It was such a special day, one that we will treasure forever. It was exactly what we wanted and to be able to do it in our own way was truly magic.

Was it hard to keep everything a secret?

Extremely hard. Especially because I worked nearly every day in the month leading up to the wedding. I was so excited and had to contain it all.

It was refreshing to see that you chose to keep your wedding story/ photos private. Why did you make that choice?

Thank you. So much of our lives are so public so it was important to us to have that one day just to ourselves without the stress of the media being involved.

What did you do for your honeymoon?

We just enjoyed each other’s company. We didn’t need or do anything fancy; just being with each other was enough.

What do you love most about Buddy?

He is extremely generous and not a day goes by that he does not make me laugh.

What do you find challenging about all the constant media attention?

We both understand that it is a part of our lives and everyone has a job to do. The hardest thing is the paparazzi that stalk us and sit in their cars out the front of our home. It’s quite stressful and invasive at times. Other than that I feel like the media is really quite supportive of us.

What would be the biggest misconception about you?

I don’t know really. I feel like I am always true to who I am with everything that I do and my book was a great way for me to expand on that. If anything I want people to know that I am regular person who goes through all of the triumphs and challenges that present themselves to most people throughout life.

What’s off limits for you on social media?

I don’t really post a lot of personal things, what I am comfortable with I will put up but the rest I like to keep to myself. I post work, my workouts, my beauty regimes and what I do to keep fit and healthy.

Being in the spotlight, how do you cope with any negativity?

I don’t read much about myself because it can have an effect on my wellbeing. I’ve got an amazing group of people around me who keep me grounded; it’s these same people whose opinion truly matters to me, they are the ones I pay attention to and listen to.

What is your ultimate way to spend a day off?

If the weather is good I love to get out in the sunshine and in the water.

Tell me about your role with Moet?

I’m really excited to be on board with Moet and Chandon as their ambassador for 2017. I believe in celebrating the magical moments in life, no matter how big or small, and that is what the brand is all about. It’s an exciting partnership and one I’m proud of.

You are also the Face of Olay. Do you have any beauty secrets or must-haves?

I am really stringent when it comes to my skin-care regime. I always say to women that it is so important to have a different moisturiser for morning and night. It sounds so simple but you will notice a huge difference in your skin.

What were your resolutions for the New Year?

Each year my resolution is the same: to improve upon the last. Get fitter, stronger, healthier, work harder.

It seems autumn still has a few more warm days up its sleeve so I am making the most of it by sneaking in some last minute summer looks. I’m a big fan of a crisp, all-white outfit and am loving the feel of lightweight linen like these shorts from Studio.W. I’ve topped it with a simple, neutral blazer to elevate it from a casual look to one that could take me to lunch with the girls. All I need to do is add a pair of heels and I am done!

Date with Kate: Jessica Gomes

7th February, 2016

985362040

My breakfast date with Jess Gomes

Australia’s Jessica Gomes is well-known for her modelling but recently has also been busy acting in Hollywood films. She worked alongside Bruce Willis in the action comedy Going Under and alongside Owen Wilson in Bastards, out in November. Gomes, 29, talks to me about the highlights of this week’s David Jones‘ autumn/winter fashion launch, her favourite style trends for the season and her intimate scenes with Bruce Willis.

How did you prepare for the David Jones fashion show?

I’ve been boxing almost three days a week, which has been really good. Just eating healthy, getting lots of sleep, just really taking care of myself. I think it’s important for me to just feel energised when every time before David Jones. It is a lot of press and a lot of long hour days so I definitely make sure that I’m in good shape and I’m well rested.

Do you still get nervous on the catwalk?

I still get butterflies definitely before each show, especially the VIP nights because everyone has worked so tirelessly beforehand. So, you just don’t want anything to go wrong. It’s good nerves. But I remember my first show, I was so nervous because it was my first time being the ambassador and it’s a big deal and big responsibility. So, I was definitely nervous then but now, I’m more comfortable, within my role and I feel like it’s just so much fun.

What are some of the trends we’ll be seeing this season?

We’re seeing Victorian designs, which are kind of high neck, lace black. Another trend is eastern prints, which is involves lots of ethnic prints from the Far East.

Do you have one fashion item that you’ve seen in the collection that you couldn’t live without this season?

I am loving the Camilla and Marc  long trench coat blazer, which Cath McNeil is actually wearing in the campaign and it’s something that you can put over a dress, an evening gown, you can put over jeans and a T-shirt.

What’s the first thing you do when you get back to Australia?

Usually, I’ll go grab a coffee and go down to Bondi and do a soft sand run and go for a swim because it just brings me back down to earth. After a big flight it just grounds me.

Congratulations on your recent acting roles. Has it always been a goal of yours to be an actress?

Well, I started out acting on a TV show in Perth, when I was 10 years old and then kind of modeling just kind of took over because modeling was easy. I mean, it was great money, I got to travel the world, I loved fashion and I loved the lifestyle that I got to live. I did study at Stella Adler. I did work with some great coaches like Susan Batson, who has worked with Nicole Kidman. So acting has definitely always been there for me, but now doors have opened for me and I’m pushing through them and seeing where it takes me. Now, it’s definitely something that I’m more focused on versus modeling.

What was it like to work with Bruce Willis and Owen Wilson?

Bruce was amazing. I mean, he was very supportive. One of our first scenes together was quite intimate. So that was interesting and I was kind of like, “Oh I wonder how it’s going to go,” but he totally guided me. He was very respectful. He knew where I was at, in my training so that was great. Working with Owen and Ed Helms and Glenn Close was a trip. It was just amazing to witness them at work together and just meeting these incredible actors that I’ve looked up to, really blew my mind and really gave me that confidence and encouragement that I can be alongside these players.

Were you nervous to do the intimate scene with Bruce Willis?

I was nervous. I mean I was telling myself, “How do I even do this?” I’m used to taking my clothes as a swimsuit model but this is actually me being intimate with somebody, which is a sacred thing. Before we went on set, Bruce actually called me to a trailer and we had a conversation and that really helped. And then as soon as we got into it, the first take, it was really fun and it was fine. In fact, I was like, “You know what, I’m just going to do it. This is happening right now and it’s real.”

Was it hard to block out the camera and crew?

It was a closed set so there weren’t a lot of people around us. It was actually really great. It was a great scene. Like a lot of actors say that sex scenes are really awkward for them. But it wasn’t awkward for me. It felt really natural and really beautiful.

Did you receive any really valuable advice from Ed Helms and Owen Wilson?

Ed Helms told me that with auditioning, it’s just good to be over-prepare to the point where you’re like, “It doesn’t matter what happens.” I think that’s the difference between modeling and acting… you have to really prepare for acting roles where with modeling, where you can kind of just arrive and go, “Hey.”… That’s the one thing that, that work ethic has been the challenge for me, for sure. It’s just a different type of a process, creative process, really.

Is comedy what you always wanted to do?

I think it was just a natural instinct. I didn’t even realise I wanted to get into comedy. Because before that I was going for really dramatic roles, playing these badass chicks. With these two roles, it was interesting, because when I went into the audition, and I was kind of going through the motions of it, I was like, “Oh, I’m actually really funny.” [Laughs] I didn’t even realise that I had that comedy streak in me, until I was able to just let go and be like, “Oh yeah, I’m pretty funny.” It was just kind of like a light bulb moment, and where other people were finding me funny! It was nice that I got to let my hair down and just be me.

What would be your dream role?

I would love to do lots of indie films and to play a Bond girl would be amazing.

Who’s someone you look up to and admire?

I love Charlize Theron because I think she’s super ballsy and just fearless. I love Jennifer Lawrence because she’s funny and I love Marion Cotillard, she’s just so talented.

Winter essentials from David Jones Autumn/Winter 2016

4th February, 2016

David Jones launched their Autumn/Winter 2016 collection last night and with every great look that went down the runway I had more and more items quickly added to my shopping list. While the weather won’t cool down for a few more weeks I’m definitely getting excited at the prospect of updating my winter wardrobe with some of these wardrobe essentials (plus some budget-friendly options too).

Look 1: The White Shirt

A white shirt is a must. It’s one of the most wearable and versatile pieces in any woman’s wardrobe so I think you can never have too many. Whether you opt for an open back style that’s a little more daring or a button down classic style it’s the kind of item that will definitely get plenty of wear.

Look 2: The Statement Coat

A soft grey is a great option for a winter coat. It stands out from the crowd in a sea of black and navy plus it works beautifully when kept tonal with lighter colours such as white and cream. I also love the streamlined silhouette of this coat which once again sets it apart from the crowd.

Look 3: Black Tote

A black tote is the kind of addition to any wardrobe that will always be in high rotation. I know I’m forever needing a bag that can easily carry everything I’ll need during the day when I’ve got multiple appointments and my to-do list is a mile long. I’m also all about keeping it simple and this classic design meets that brief while still being able to house all my day to day essentials.
