12 Insta-outfit ideas to steal from New York Fashion Week

28th February, 2017

New York Fashion Week has come and gone but the outfit inspo is definitely here to stay. The street style in the Big Apple is always next level amazing so here are a few well-dressed ladies to help you pull together your next look…

A post shared by Eva Chen (@evachen212) on

Former magazine editor and now head of fashion partnerships at Instagram, Eva Chen can always be relied upon for ensembles with flair. Not only is she showing that dressing with a bump doesn’t mean shying away from bold prints and patterns, her ability to combine various textures has made this look one that definitely stands out from the crowd.

Nadia flies the flag for Aussie blogger style with this striking look. Try working with various shades in the same colour family to give your ensemble some cohesion.

A post shared by Jamie Chung (@jamiejchung) on

A denim jumpsuit is a great alternative to traditional jeans. For a dressier look opt for a dark indigo hue a la Chung.

Extend the wear of a summer dress by teaming it with a pair of jeans once the weather cools down. Add a pair of pointed pumps and cropped coat and you’re set.

Toughen up a feminine dress by adding a pair of ankle boots. A leather and shearling jacket provides the perfect contrast to the floaty nature of the dress.

You can always rely upon Olivia Palermo for a guaranteed fashion home run. A pair of knee high boots is given an on trend feel when worked back with an asymmetrical skirt. Grey hues are also always the perfect go-to during autumn/winter.

Rainbow hues are given a sophisticated feel with the addition of a navy blazer. A mini handbag gives it a modern feel.

A post shared by Aimee Song (@songofstyle) on

The new take on the white shirt is a little more deconstructed giving the corporate staple a more contemporary feel. When paired with wide-leg pants its the perfect look for the office.

Daring cut-outs are definitely for the fashion risk taker however a maxi length make it a little less risque. Gomez’s ankle strap heels add a sprinkling of sophistication.

Kate Bosworth is the epitome of ladylike polish in this ensemble. Monochrome with a touch of camel is always a winning colour combination, especially when it comes in the form of a gorgeous coat.

Venture further afield when it comes to coats this coming winter. A kimono style coat will keep you cosy whilst upping your style cred. Also who says you need to stick to sombre hues when the weather cools down? A pop of colour such as a pair of mustard pants gives this look a head-turning finish.

A pleated skirt and floaty blouse are given a more casual feel with the addition of studded ankle boots. It’s also hard to resist a coat with a statement fur collar to dial up the style stakes.

10 stylish Aussie women to inspire your look on Australia Day

26th January, 2017

What better day than Australia Day to shine a spotlight on some of our own homegrown fashion talent. If there’s one thing we do well Down Under it’s style that’s relaxed and understated yet still distinctly fashion forward. These women have managed to cultivate an aesthetic that works perfectly to complement our laidback lifestyle but still inject it with their own trendsetting spin. The next time you’re stuck for a little fashion inspiration look no further than home soil…

Nicole Warne

Gary Pepper Girl’s founder Nicole Warne is the very definition of stylish. Appearing in campaigns for some of the world’s biggest fashion brands, she’s always immaculately put together and is the epitome of feminine styling with a modern spin.

Sara Donaldson

I’ve known Sara for awhile and her style mantra of wearing a colour palette of only black, white and grey has always been her signature look and why not when it works this well? She’s a great example of knowing what works for you and really owning it.

Amanda Shadforth

A talented photographer and one of our biggest fashion bloggers, Oracle Fox’s Amanda Shadforth manages to work man-style tailoring with just the right injection of feminine touches. Her looks always have a distinct contemporary vibe which she manages to mix beautifully with the simple aesthetic of Australian style.

Lara Worthington

The quintessential beach girl, Lara Worthington’s style has certainly evolved from her bikini model days to a wardrobe that’s highlighted by designers such as Dior, Gucci and Celine. Her looks are always fashion forward and have a distinctly edgy vibe in a nod to the aesthetic of New York, where Worthington now resides.

Jesinta Franklin

The newly married Jesinta Franklin is the perfect canvas for showing off some seriously envy-inducing looks (being a David Jones ambassador certainly helps!). Her looks are always quite demure, often wearing dresses or skirts that go to the knee or are midi length however she always flashes just a glimmer of skin to inject a touch of sexiness. She’s definitely one to watch.

Jessica Stein

The jetsetting blogger behind the website Tuula Vintage is the perfect go-to muse when it comes to women who love looks that are relaxed and echo the kind of covetable global lifestyle that Stein has. She favours floaty fabrics, denim and feminine prints with all her outfits having a laidback elegance.

Nadia Fairfax

I’ve been friends with Nadia for ages and she has always had a great sense of style. Her looks are always sleek but have a sense of playfulness to it whether it’s a great pair of statement earrings or a bold, unexpected print or colour.

Christine Centenera

She’s Vogue Australia’s fashion director and no wonder – she has a look that’s distinctly her own and is always one to set the trends. Her looks are always peppered with designer pieces and the one constant is her ability to pull off a myriad of tricky trends – everything from stirrup leggings as she wore at Fashion Week this year to a fluffy coat – and make it look oh-so stylish.

Laura Brown

The newly appointed editor-in-chief of US InStyle has a quirky sense of style that is often punctuated by the latest designer pieces. She favours bright colours, bold prints and logo t-shirts but manages to work it together for a distinctly unique aesthetic.

Brooke Testoni

The stylist and founder of her eponymous blog, Testoni manages to cover the full spectrum of fashion whether it be a simple pair of blue jeans with a uniquely structured top to a dress in a luxe, jewel-toned fabric. It’s a look that’s distinctly on-trend and of-the-moment.

12 Insta-outfits to inspire your look in 2017

2nd January, 2017

A brand new year may be inspiring you to update your look – but where to start? Before you hit the shops or start doing a major closet clean out be sure to start with a little fashion inspiration first. And what better place to start than with some of the most stylish ladies to ever hit Instagram…

A photo posted by Aimee Song (@songofstyle) on

Dress up your denim with bright pops of colour. A vibrant hue is the ultimate way to offset a pair of blue jeans.

Inject a little man-style tailoring into your wardrobe. Every woman should own a great suit that fits her body perfectly. When it comes to choosing a colour you can’t go wrong with shades such as black, navy or grey.

Channel Olivia Palermo and focus on the little details this year. The perfect sleeve, a structured bag or a quirky finishing touch to a pair of shoes is a great way to make your outfit stand out from the crowd.

Who says neutrals can’t make a statement? A natural hue looks even more glamorous with a touch of shine while a multi-toned mules look elegant and polished.

Mix and match textures for a look that feels considered and perfectly put together. Suede and wool work fabulously together when the weather cools down.

A photo posted by Miranda (@mirandakerr) on

Think classic when it comes to your accessories. A pair of gold aviators or a chain strap bag are the ideal way to finish an outfit.

Pinstripe shirting goes from corporate to cool when cut in a modern off the shoulder style.  Think outside the box when it comes to traditional patterns and prints.

It’s hard to improve on monochrome as it works so well. Play with contrast such as adding a white blazer to an all black ensemble to really make the look pop.

A tough biker jacket can look polished when teamed with the right texture or pattern. This leather jacket looks decidedly polished when paired with a velvet bag and a skirt in a delicate houndstooth pattern.

A photo posted by Gigi Hadid (@gigihadid) on

Sneakers are here to stay especially when of the white variety. Look for slightly elevated platform styles to give the look a point of difference or stick to old favourites from the likes of Nike and Adidas. The only rule? Keep them spotless!

A photo posted by Kendall (@kendalljenner) on

I’ve always been a big fan of touches of animal print. Go all out with a jacket Kendall Jenner style or go for a hint of it such as the trim on a pair of shoes or a bag.

Don’t be afraid to clash prints but just be sure to choose one colour to tie the look together. This look is given some cohesion with elegant black pumps that pick up the colour in the jumper without obscuring its playful nature.

Steal her style: Gigi Hadid

2nd December, 2016

A photo posted by Gigi Hadid (@gigihadid) on

This party season why not try an after dark look a la Gigi Hadid. Whilst Hadid’s Roberto Cavalli coat might not be quite right for a warm Australian summer you can do your own take on it with a lightweight duster coat. A little black slip dress teamed with a flowing coat adds a touch of drama to an otherwise simple look. Add a pair of strappy stilettos and you have yourself a sexy evening ensemble that will help you stand out from the crowd.

Duster coat

A neutral coat can be worn in the evening however you can also take it down a notch into daywear by teaming it with a pair of jeans or a dress and sneakers.

Slip dress

The slip dress is the ultimate nod to the ’90s trend. Consider it a key addition to your summer wardrobe – it’s sleek, simple and so versatile.

Heels

A pair of black strappy stilettos will keep you party ready this festive season. They’re an easy go-to when you want to make a statement without overpowering the rest of your outfit.

Top handle bag

Hadid has kept her bag quite practical however if you wanted to swap it out for a simple clutch you could easily transform the look into something spot on for the evening.

Monochrome always delivers a polished finish but don’t be afraid to experiment. Pair a dressy skirt with slightly more relaxed pieces such as a tee and slides a la Donaldson.

Steal her style: Aimee Song

12th August, 2016

A photo posted by Aimee Song (@songofstyle) on

She has 3.8 million followers on Instagram alone and her hugely successful blog Song of Style is an endless source of fashion inspo, so it’s no surprise that Aimee Song knows how to turn standard fashion staples such as a blazer and jeans and turn it into something deserving of thousands of likes. Add this outfit to your repertoire for those days when you want to walk out the door with some extra polish.

Black blazer

I know that I can’t live without a black blazer in my life purely because it’s often an easy option to throw on over an outfit and pulls a look together without much effort.

Black tee

A wardrobe should always have a well stocked supply of t-shirts. I tend to favour white the most but a simple black tee is always good to have on hand.

Ripped denim

This is a great lesson in how distressed denim can still look sharp. A pair of skinny or straight leg jeans, cropped at the ankle and paired with the right accoutrements can go from comfy casual to decidedly chic.

Metallic bag

Not ventured into metallics territory as yet? A bag is a great place to start. A metallic bag is often a great way to add a pop of colour to an outfit and give it a point of difference.

Pointed heels

The plethora of pointed heels available this season with interesting finishes and textures will ignite your passion for the humble black pump. An investment you definitely won’t regret.

Instagram outfits to give you wardrobe inspo this week

4th July, 2016

Oh, Instagram. So many great outfits, so little time. One of the great things about Instagram is having small bite-sized pieces of fashion inspo at your fingertips at all hours of the day. If you’re ever having one of those days where you’re scratching your head about what to wear Instagram can often be a great place to spark an outfit idea or two. This week, let these ladies inspire you…

Jessica Stein

The endless snaps of her jetsetting lifestyle will inspire some major wanderlust but follow Stein and you’ll also be guaranteed a steady stream of great looks to inspire you. The below look – double denim done oh-so well will inspire you to invest in some flares and snap up a chambray shirt immediately. You could also try the look with your favourite skinny jeans if flares aren’t your thing.

Jesinta Campbell

Let Campbell inspire you to adopt some great neckwear this week. Try a black skinny scarf or a great choker to give your wardrobe some instant on-trend cred.

Taylor Tomasi Hill

If the former accessories director of Marie Claire and artistic director of Moda Operandi has taught us anything it’s that a pop of colour or a pattern can instantly liven up an all-black ensemble. The striped shirt and pop of blue give this outfit a bit of personality. So this week, if you’re usually one for wearing black from head to toe why not branch out and add a print or a vibrant hue to your outfit to give it a point of difference.

Miroslava Duma

The diminuitive digital mogul and founder of Buro 24/7 rarely ever puts a fashion foot wrong so she’s always guaranteed to provide an outfit idea or two. So why not try an unexpected pairing this week by teaming a midi skirt with a white cotton top or even a simple white tee? It’s a winning high-low mix.

Aimee Song

A button down shirt can be one of the most versatile things you’ll ever own but sometimes it can err on the side of conservative. So why not mix it up this week by layering it with a vest – bonus brownie points if you can find a leather one with loads of attitude a la Song.

How to shop straight from Instagram

18th April, 2016

IMG_1627

Am I the only one who can spend hours endlessly scrolling Instagram and walk away with an even longer shopping list than when I started? It’s great when I spot someone wearing something that I really love and I can see where they got it from but sometimes it’s frustrating when I fall in love with a bag or a pair of shoes only to have no outfit details to help me track it down.

To solve these issues, I have been using an app called ‘LIKEtoKNOW.it’ which allows you to shop directly from Instagram.

All you need to do is register for a free account, double tap or like the photos which have the unique liketk.it URL and almost like magic the links appear in your inbox and you can click to buy. I’ve found that it saves me so much time and means I can buy the exact pieces I want. I don’t need to spend time trawling the internet to find something similar. You can also set the emails to come ‘ASAP’, ‘daily’ or ‘weekly’ which means you’ll never miss out on a shopping purchase again. So, who’s ready for a little add to cart action?

I’m taking over Liketoknow.it’s Instagram all day tomorrow and showcasing some of my favourite looks. Don’t miss it!

How to take a good Instagram pic

30th June, 2015

IMG_6140

These days taking a really beautiful photo can be as simple as snapping a pic on an iPhone. I feel Instagram is about beautiful images. The kind that you’d want to put in a photo album or frame. I’m not so big on treating Instagram as a diary but more as a way to collect images that inspire me. I love fashion, I love travel and I love my family, so most of the time my subject matter will be made up of those types of images. I love capturing images on my phone all the time. I am definitely not an expert photographer but these are some tips I’ve picked up along the way.

Lighting is everything
Whether it’s a professional photo shoot or a selfie, lighting is key to getting a good shot. If you’re taking a selfie always face a window to get the most flattering light. This is why car selfies always turn out so great.

Take more than one shot
Don’t be shy about taking multiple shots. The odds are you’re going to get a shot that you’ll love.

Use the grid function on your phone
Using the grid lines on your phone can help you line up a shot. Often you’ll get a more interesting image by not having everything perfectly in the middle but slightly off centre.

Try different angles
The flatlay shot has become really popular (a pic taken straight from above) and it just goes to show that different angles can really change the way a shot turns out. Don’t be afraid to take multiple shots from different angles as it’s the best way to get the best looking shot.

Don’t go too crazy with filters
I love a good filter as much as the next person but sometimes it can take away from the image. If you get your lighting and composition right, your photo should be ready to upload to Instagram without any extra help.

What are your best Instagram tips?
