Fashion resolutions to make in 2016

When it comes to my wardrobe I find the beginning of a brand new year is the perfect time to make some fashion resolutions. Whether it’s editing my closet or simply pinpointing new trends to try (or leave behind in 2015) I like to start the year fresh and ready to experiment with different looks. Here are some of the resolutions I think all women should make for the year ahead…

Assess your style

It can be easy to fall into a rut and just wear the same thing over and over again so what better time to do a style audit than a brand new year? Take the time to look at each item in your wardrobe and be brutally honest about whether it’s still flattering to you. If for example you purchased a pair of slouchy boyfriend jeans but find they’re not really doing much for you don’t be afraid to cull them from your wardrobe. Each item in your wardrobe should make you feel amazing, and if doesn’t bin it or donate it to charity.

Know what works

One of the benefits of a style audit is that you’ll be able to easily identify what works and what doesn’t and be able to keep those particular styles and silhouettes in mind when you’re shopping throughout the year. If voluminous dresses tend to swamp your frame, then you’ll know to avoid them and instead look for something a little more form fitting.

Invest in staple pieces

There are certain pieces that are the building blocks of a great wardrobe so it pays to buy the best quality you can. This means staples like a good pair of jeans, a well made coat, a blazer, a quality handbag and one go-to little black dress. These are the items that will be in high rotation throughout the year so it’s worth investing a little more in them to ensure they go the distance.

Build a library of basics

Basics are the workhorses of a well functioning wardrobe. They’re items such as a simple white or grey tee, a white button down shirt and key items of underwear such as a t-shirt bra, a strapless bra and a slip. These are the backbone of most outfits so make sure you have them on hand as they can be mixed and matched easily to form different looks and will be the basis of most of your outfits throughout the year.

Don’t fall victim to every single trend

Be selective in the trends you jump on throughout the year. Not every trend will work for every person so it pays to be selective in which ones you incorporate into your wardrobe and also to think of different ways you can wear it that are flattering to you. If for example you love the 70s trend but find flares just aren’t your thing, you could try wearing 70s-inspired accessories instead such as a wide-brimmed hat or stacked heel sandals.

What are some of your fashion resolutions for the new year?
