There are some days where I’m stuck for what to wear. So instead of staring at my closet for ages not really getting anywhere I tend to do what I’m sure a lot of you do—scroll through Instagram for a dose of outfit inspiration. And whilst a scrolling session does provide a ton of style ideas, I do like to reign it in a bit more and do a more targeted approach. This is why I have a few people I regularly turn to to help ignite a fashion idea or two. A quick peek at their accounts will always get the styling juices flowing and I’ll settle on a look before I know it.
Now you’d be hard pressed to look at an image of Olivia Palermo and not walk away having sorted your outfit out. The girl can do no wrong. I love how she experiments with colours and textures, often layering it all unexpectedly and still manages to pull it all together in a really cohesive, polished way. I’m sure I’m not the only one with a huge style crush on her.
Kendall Jenner manages to combine a runway sensibility with everyday practicality and make it work. She can be wearing jeans, a tee and sneakers one minute to a fierce, edgy evening look the next so she provides an endless source of fashion inspo.
One of the reasons I love following my friends on Instagram is because I not only get to see what kind of exciting things they’re up to but I get a healthy injection of style inspo too. Nadia’s one such friend. I love that her style is a riot of bold bright colours worked back with feminine cuts and playful touches. Her style always brightens up my day.
If I’m after something sleek, understated and minimalist then Sara is the girl I turn to. Seeing her style always reminds me to pare it back and that less is more sometimes. Also the fact that she always sticks to the same colour palette always serves to be the perfect reminder to bring it back to basics, which more often than not works to when I’m experiencing a stying block.
Yes, it’s not technically a person but Sara’s online store, The Undone is basically her personified. I love the simple, streamlined styling of all the looks and the elevated accessories that are often showcased.
She has one of the most enviable wardrobes in the world so it’s no surprise that Gigi Hadid is also one of my style go-tos. Her street style looks are my favourite, especially her casual, New York City-inspired ensembles but I do love it when she dials up the glamour with a showstopping dress.
Who do you turn to when you’re in need of fashion inspiration?
Only Olivia Palermo could make dog walking look oh-so chic. The perennial street style fave rocks a perfect outfit for the trans-seasonal weather with a puffy-sleeved off the shoulder top, distressed denim and simple metallic loafers.
Off the shoulder top
The off the shoulder top has seen many incarnations from tie sleeves to bell sleeves but the puffed sleeve is particularly cute. Just remember that with this much volume up top it’s important to keep whatever you’re wearing at the bottom quite streamlined.
Miss Palermo demonstrates how you can rock distressed denim and still make it look quite polished. Ensure that you get your jeans cropped to the right length to avoid fabric pooling at your ankles – there’s so much going on with the jeans already you don’t want to overwhelm.
Metallic shoes are a bit of a statement making piece but surprisingly versatile too. These add a bit of interest to the outfit without completely detracting from everything else which make them that elusive shoe that can work in myriad ways.
Olivia Palermo never ever puts a foot wrong and that applies whether she’s heading to a black tie dinner or simply out for a casual day of shopping. I’m all about winter layering a la Ms Palermo with lots of oversized coats and cosy knits in the equation. A pair of cropped black leather pants will be your best friend throughout winter as it goes with virtually anything and works for myriad occasions. It seems like sneakers are well and truly here to stay and a pair of high tops will take your sneaker game up a notch. This is cool casual with a touch of polish and it works beautifully.
Copy and paste the look into your own wardrobe with some of my top shopping picks below.
You’ll get plenty of wear out of a simple black coat so don’t be afraid to experiment with different textures whether it be a faux fur or a classic wool to give it a point of difference.
Cost knits are a wardrobe staple that will last season after season so stock up on lots of neutrals such as white, grey and cream to provide the perfect basics to build upon. There’s something really stylish about a simple turtleneck; it will instantly lend a touch of polish to your outfit.
Black pants are a no-brainer during winter. They’re versatile and can easily be dressed up or down and in a fabric such as leather they look very on point. Alternatively a pair of pants in a simple denim will work equally as well.
High top sneakers
Expand your sneaker repertoire with a pair of high tops. They act as a great counterbalance for a super feminine outfit due to their slightly tougher look and you’ll find they are surprisingly versatile and can go with most outfits you’d wear with your regular low-cut sneakers.
A simple leather shoulder bag in a tan or camel is one accessory that will definitely get plenty of use in your wardrobe. It also makes a nice change if you’re bored with your trusty black or brown bag.
With the cooler weather just around the corner Olivia Palermo’s look at the Kate Spade Housewarming pop up event in New York City is providing the perfect wardrobe inspiration for how to do denim this winter. Add a statement coat and ankle strap heels to and you can instantly elevate the look to one that is evening appropriate.
I always look out for what Olivia Palermo’s wearing during the international shows and I’m guaranteed to be all over any street style snaps of her. What can I say? The girl can dress! I don’t think I’ve ever seen her put a foot wrong. Her looks are always impeccably put together from head to toe with great hair, amazing outfit, unbelievable shoes plus she always manages to nail her accessories with just the right jewellery or the perfect bag. I love the fact she’s not afraid to mix things up by wearing interesting combinations or clashing colours and prints, yet she always looks polished. A killer combination don’t you think?
