Loafers vs brogues

5th July, 2016

This season it’s all about the loafer or the brogue. Both comfortable and stylish, they’re the perfect shoe options when you’re bored of boots and ballet flats and want something to change up your winter footwear repertoire. Whether you’re a loafer girl or a fan of the brogue through and through there are plenty of great options to have you stepping out in style this winter.

Loafers

Leather loafers are a great alternative to the trusty ballet flat. A pair in basic black will see you through the season and beyond, however if you want to something a little more fun why not try a pair in a vibrant Gucci-esque red or a cool leopard print. Alternatively, neutral tones such as a camel or tan will complement most outfits and not completely overpower. The key with this look? A flash of ankle is important so be sure to pair them with cropped pants or jeans or a midi hem.

Brogues

Steal a little style inspiration from the boys this season with brogues. They’re a more polished alternative to sneakers and just about as comfy. I know I wear mine to death as I love how they help ground an outfit but in a practical sense they’re comfy enough to help me keep up with a very active toddler! You can opt for classic colours such as tan or black however I went for a silver for something a little different plus metallics are a no-brainer for the evening so they’re a good option for dressing up an outfit for a night time event. As with loafers my tip is to always flash a bit of ankle to create a sense of proportion in your outfit. You can pair loafers with feminine pastels and fun prints or if you want a slightly more tomboy look, add a blazer and boyfriend jeans.

What I Wore: Goodnight Macaroon

Heading into that trans-seasonal period where the weather is a little inconsistent can make getting dressed everyday a little tricky. It can sometimes be hard to predict if it’s going to be warm or a jacket kind of day and there’s nothing worse than ending up overheating or worse still, freezing the entire day. This is why I’m a big fan of long sleeved dresses during autumn. They’re great because they’ll keep you warm if the temperature suddenly drops throughout the day but they’re not so hot that you’ll end up sweltering if the weather gets warm. Plus I’m always a big believer in dresses if you want to get out the door faster. There’s no need to think about separates working together, simply pop on a dress, choose your shoes and you’re out the door.

Ease of dressing aside I’m now all about dresses given I have a burgeoning baby bump to accomodate so I’ve been on a bit of a shopping reconnaissance mission to update my wardrobe. I’ve been scouring high and low for some new labels to add to the mix and discovered Goodnight Macaroon. Their range is quite classic and they have a great range of quality staples (including a lovely selection of dresses) so it works perfectly with my wardrobe aesthetic. I snapped up the above dresses and love the fact they’re all really diverse in styles and can easily work for multiple occasions. I can wear them for a day in the office as easily as I could at an event or hanging out with my family. And what’s even better is that I’ll be able to wear them again after my pregnancy. Plus for someone who doesn’t get much time to shop, I love the fact that they have an online store so I can snap up multiple pieces without ever having to leave home.
