Farewelling design legend Carla Zampatti

7th April, 2021
Interviewing Carla Zampatti last year at the Everest Carnival Lunch

The news was met with tremendous sadness, that a giant of the fashion industry passed away this week. At the age of 78, Carla Zampatti has left behind a legacy that will forever remember her, and her incredible designs as being at the very core of Australian fashion. From Princess Mary of Denmark, to Julia Gillard and Nicole Kidman, Carla’s designs have been worn by some of Australia’s most influential women, and worn everywhere from runways to race days and red carpets.

I’ve been a huge fan of the designer for as long as I can remember. I’ve worn pieces from the Carla Zampatti label to events and at the races and in many a magazine, such as the ultra glam gold pants below that I wore on a shoot for The Grace Tales. Most notably, my bridesmaids wore custom Carla Zampatti dresses at my wedding. I knew she would create something beautiful, and to this day, I’m still in love with the design. I’ve attended every show at Fashion Week, and remember each experience as one that would always leave me with new additions to my mental lookbook, and always, always inspired.

Like plenty of wardrobes in Australia, and I’m sure around the world, I have a number of special Carla Zampatti pieces in my closet, both dressy and casual that I will treasure and continue to wear for years to come. I remember the below jacket for a What I Wore shoot several years ago, and to this day it still feels on point—which is just a testament to the classic aesthetic the brand is known for.

It is with great sadness that Carla is farewelled, but what a legacy she leaves. One that has and will continue to shape design and fashion for the foreseeable future. Vale Carla Zampatti.

What I Wore: Moments in Monochrome

22nd November, 2018

If there’s a bold pattern involved I’m usually one to join the party — I love statement pieces that pop. So I was all about these striped Carla Zampatti pants the moment I saw them. The monochrome colour palette is an easy one to work with which is key when styling something in a striking print as it makes it easier to find something to work it back with. Black and white is usually a cinch as it can go with virtually anything. I wanted the pants to remain the focal point of the look so I paired it with a simple black cami making for a classic and polished look. I could see myself wearing this look everywhere from the office to a work event without missing a beat.

I wanted to keep the monochrome colour scheme working throughout so I kept my accessories to a sleek black. A great pair of black Calvin Klein pumps provided the ideal finishing touch to this look whilst a black tote allowed me to carry all my necessities throughout the day in a stylish way.

If you’re looking to dip your toe into wearing big, bold patterns I highly recommend opting for one in a monochrome colour palette. It’s a colour scheme that’s forever chic, super wearable and one that is always guaranteed to make an impact no matter the occasion.

What I Wore: Smart Casual

16th October, 2018

Whenever I see the dress code smart casual it always gives me cause for pause as I’m trying to rack my brain of what I have in my wardrobe that fits the bill. Ultimately I think it’s all about working off duty style whilst still maintaining an element of polish. It’s about marrying the best of both worlds and merging casual pieces with elevated staples.

This Carla Zampatti jacket is one such piece that is right at home when worn back with dressy separates, but I can still pair it with denim and have it look cohesive. One of my favourite combinations is jeans and a white tee, which can be super casual but when paired with a sophisticated jacket it lifts the look into one that’s polished without being too fussy. Jeans have definitely become more accepted for events and relaxed workplaces, and when worked back with classic pieces it can easily be your go-to ensemble for those times you need to dress smart casual.

Great flats are essential for smart casual dressing which is why I am really loving my new Dior flats. They’re a classic shape, incorporate sleek details and as a bonus are super comfortable to be in all day. As for my accessories, a statement bag, with structure and extra finishes such as a chain strap or embellishments is the ideal option for elevating a look without being too overwhelming. Don’t be afraid to go bold with your eyewear. These coloured Le Specs sunglasses add a modern touch, without compromising the overall vibe of my outfit.
