How to style combat boots

18th August, 2021

If there’s one trend that’s been doing the rounds of late it’s the resurgence of the chunky combat boot. I remember they were a 90s staple but now they’ve made a comeback and they’ve become a firm fixture everywhere from the runway to Instagram. These days there a few different style iterations from the Chelsea style boot to lace-up Doc Martens style but either way it’s all about going big and bold. But how to style the combat boot that feels like you’re wearing it not it’s wearing you? They can be tricky to work with as you’ve really got to balance volume and proportions given the boot is the kind of style that’s more of a statement piece. I’ve recently added a pair of Stella McCartney boots to my autumn/winter wardrobe and I’ve been having fun experimenting with different looks. In the process, I’ve discovered a few things about styling them and key points to remember.

If you’re wanting to jump aboard this trend, I’m sharing a few of my tips below and some great examples of the boots being worn and worked back with different pieces. The main thing to remember is to have fun with it and don’t be afraid to go big and bold!

Consider hemlines

This style of boot is designed to be the focal point of a look so it works really well with shorter pieces. This look is sophisticated with the crisp white and tweed pieces but is instantly grounded with the boots. Also, experiment with what you pair them with. Working them back with shorts is unexpected but strikes the right balance between a look that’s slightly softer but has added edge in the form of the black boots.

Crop it

You can wear these boots with jeans and pants but make sure the length is quite cropped so you showcase the shoes. I think they work better when they’re able to shine and be the focal point. I think there’s also something quite fresh and contemporary about wearing a cropped pant with a bold choice of footwear.

Mix and match

Don’t be afraid to pair these shoes with slightly more feminine pieces or polished styles. I like the juxtaposition of the boots with a delicate, satin slip dress. The height of femininity with a little bit of edge. I think it’s also a great way to temper really classic styles and make them a little more modern. I wore mine with a beautiful belted coat and loved the contrast it provided.
