What I Wore: Witchery x Ellery

10th March, 2022

I love a great designer collaboration, so I was so excited to hear that designer Kym Ellery was teaming up with Witchery to create a capsule collection. The results are nothing less than ultra wearable — as soon as I saw the entire range I wanted everything! The vibe is very Ellery, and having been a fan of the brand over the years, it’s definitely great to see new pieces with the label’s signature modern and sleek aesthetic. I really liked the play on volume, with voluminous sleeves, cinched waists and flared hems all making an appearance, plus the hues of soft lilac and a thoroughly electric cobalt blue added some vibrancy.

While there were definitely plenty of pieces in the range that I bookmarked for various occasions, I did fall in love with the below LBD. Shift dresses have always been a key aspect of my wardrobe, I’ve worn them to work, while I was pregnant, to events…but this particular style felt fresh, with just the right amount of drama. The clean lines of the dress evoke a classic feel, but what I loved most were the feature sleeves. It’s always great when a simplicity is injected with a little playfulness and the frill sleeves certainly did just that. The waterfall effect was the final clincher – so much fun, and a definite statement.

Working with black, I had a blank palette to work with and I like being able to take an outfit in myriad directions. I wanted to break up the black a little so I thought a little colour was in order. These forest green heels with tie feature worked well against the dark hue of the dress, and helped inject a little zing of energy.

Unexpected silhouettes and finishes are one of the things I always look for in a dress which is why I particularly loved the asymmetrical finish of this moss green Christopher Esber dress. It gave it a unique touch. I don’t often wear this shade either so it was nice to do something different. Accessories are always a key component to any outfit and it’s often what brings cohesion to the overall look, so with that in mind I thought as the dress is quite soft and feminine I wanted to team it with my cut-out Givenchy ankle boots to ground the look and give it some edge. A dark bag would have blended in a little too much for this particular look so I opted for a Givenchy Antigona in a nude shade to provide some contrast. My Ellery sunglasses and Eddie Borgo choker add a sense of modern sophistication to the outfit.

MBFWA: my fave shows

27th April, 2015

The beautiful Toni Maticevski show

So many shows, so many clothes, so many trends! Fashion Week is always a great place for a little fashion inspiration. It’s an even better way to compile a very lengthy shopping list! There were a whole lot of shows during the week, but these were my favourites…

Toni Maticevski

My favourite by far. It was just breathtakingly beautiful and I loved every piece in the collection. The production was incredible, the styling was beautiful and it was just a really gorgeous show.

Ellery

I loved Ellery. It was a really great show to kick off the week and I love all her designs. Having Gemma Ward open the whole show also really created a lot of buzz. She’s a favourite in fashion circles and to have her open Australian Fashion Week was pretty special.

Bec and Bridge

I’ve known the Bec and Bridge girls for many years and I’ve always loved what they do as they always create really wearable pieces. Even though the show was held at Carriageworks (where MBFWA is based), it was still offsite in this big open space and the whole show just had a bit of wow factor.

Manning Cartell

I thought this show was great. Loads of 70s inspired pieces to fall in love with and I walked away with a favourite or two (maybe three!).

Bianca Spender

Bianca Spender just knows how to make clothes that have me falling in love with them immediately. I was mentally marking some pieces as I saw them coming down the runway and was adding them to my shopping list.

Date with Kate: Gemma Ward

Australia’s Gemma Ward was discovered at 15 soon one of modelling’s most sought-after faces, becoming the youngest model to appear on the cover of US Vogue. She has also appeared in movies from The Strangers to Black Balloon. Ward, 27, recently returned from a six-year break from modelling as an ambassador for Coca-Cola Life and has this week walked for Ellery at Australian Fashion Week. I caught up with the Perth-born model to chat about her break, being a new mum and returning to the catwalk.

What are you up to at the moment?

I’m an ambassador for Coke Life, I am doing a bit of modelling, [I attended] Fashion Week and I’m developing a website, and obviously looking after my baby.

Tell me about your website.

It will probably be centred around my travels with my partner and we’ll be shooting fashion. I also want to do a shopping app; it’s just in development at the moment.

What was it like to be back on the Australian catwalk?

Oh gosh – it’s pretty surreal because I was 15 last time I was on the Australian catwalk, but it’s also pretty cool to support Kym [Ellery].

You have returned to the fashion industry. Are you back modelling full time?

Well, I’m open to things. I am juggling working and being a mother. So I do the [jobs] I love … I think it’s really nice to have an enriched life with lots of different things going on.

You were one of the most in-demand models in the world. Was it hard to turn away and take a break?

No. I made the choice to do it. I wanted to step back and there were a few things I wanted to do. I took those chances and then I just kind of kept going with it and it became like this long, novel, kind of interesting and kind of crazy thing that I was exploring. It was so fascinating. I was really delving into who I was and finding the strength and just writing and playing music and exploring the world and falling in love and doing all kinds of things.

Did you ever have any regrets?

No, because it was something that I needed to do. As much as it was a choice, it was also a necessity for me as well. So I took the time and I was happy, too. I felt like it was the right decision for me. I came out a lot stronger. I’m glad that I took the time.

Tell me about your beautiful daughter.

She is pretty much the light of my life. She has changed my life considerably. I think just experiencing bringing a life into the world, there’s nothing else like it. It’s crazy. I mean, I didn’t think that it would happen at the time that it did. And then her personality has been so fun to get to know. I’m really loving learning more and more about her as she grows up.

What has been the biggest surprise for you being a new mum?

How transformative it would be. I didn’t know that it would affect me so much.

How do you juggle your career and being a new mum?

I have my partner who is very supportive. And then his mum helps us out and my mum will help out, and then we have friends as well.

What do you do for fun?

I’ve really been getting into painting. I find that it really calms me. And I love yoga and meditating. I like going swimming and surfing with my boyfriend.

What has been your biggest career highlight?

The American Vogue cover was pretty big and very special. And doing some of the movies I did. I didn’t think I would be working on some big movies like that.

What was it like to be the youngest person ever to be on the cover of Vogue?

It was pretty cool. I mean, I didn’t know that I’d make it onto the cover. But yeah, it really did change things for me. It was kind of bizarre.

Will you continue acting?

I’m definitely open to different projects because I’ve always had a passion for classics. I spent a long time watching all the classics and studying them and deconstructing them. I’ve done acting classes for a long time. But whether I’m doing acting or whether I’m not, I’ll direct my own little things. I started writing some stuff. I’ve also pooled some short stories that I found really interesting for short films. I’m 27 now  – I’ve still got a lot of years.

If you could play any role, who would it be?

I would love to play this model who was Monet’s muse. That would be amazing. I thought she was really interesting. She was playful and would dress as a boy. It was all during the time in France when things were really changing for women. She then became a painter after that. And I love Marilyn Monroe and Grace Kelly.

Who inspires you?

I like people who cross different fields and disciplines as well. Nick Cave is really inspiring, his music and then doing films and soundtracks; people like Stanley Kubrick who create whole worlds with their vision.

Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia: Ellery

13th April, 2015

mercedes-benz_presents__e_l_l_e_r_y___look_1

Who better to open Fashion Week than Kym Ellery? Judging from the show the monochrome trend shows no signs of going anywhere any time soon. Kym Ellery’s collection was filled with dramatic silhouettes including flares, voluminous coats and ankle length double breasted vests. The black and white palette was mixed with the occasional pop of colour and paisley print. One of the highlights of the show was definitely seeing Gemma Ward strutting down the catwalk again. A great start to the week!
