MBFWA Q&A: Erin Heatherton

17th April, 2015

Erin-Heatherton----Impulse-MBFWA(0066)-resize

Erin Heatherton’s successful modelling career has meant she’s appeared in everything from Sports Illustrated to Elle and Esquire and held the much coveted role of Victoria’s Secret Angel. In Australia as an ambassador for Impulse, she wowed crowds when she attended the Manning Cartell show and has been a favourite with the fashion snappers at MBFWA. Here Erin reveals her favourite shows at Fashion Week, the biggest misconception about models and why she really wants to move to Sydney…

What are you doing in Australia?

I’m out here with Impulse fragrances, which I relaunched with my friends Bambi Northwood-Blyth and Zippora Seven last August.  The 3 of us are the faces of the brand.  I also attended the Manning Cartell show at MBFWA and hosted a fashion week breakfast for Impulse. It’s my second home.  I really love coming to Australia.

What are your fashion week essentials?

A great bag. Impulse Romantic spark – perfect for fashion girl on the go and a really fun attitude – it’s about being social and enjoying the chaos.

What are your favourite summer trends you’ve seen on the runway this season?

Colour. Manning Cartell did some really pretty pieces this season.  I can’t wait to take a few pieces back home with me.  I also loved the shapes that were on the runway at Ellery.

What are your summer essentials?

Vintage Levis shorts, Impulse fragrance in your bag at the beach and SPF!

What is your summer beauty prep?

I like to keep things simple. I just curl my lashes and wear some tinted lip balm.

What is your beauty routine?

Most of my skincare is by Dr Colbert.  I swear by his facial toning disks, the stimulate serum and the Illumino face oil.  I also love Impulse Romantic Spark because it is so easy to just throw in my handbag and top up with fragrance throughout the day when I’m running around. I’ve also just tried the Lanolips tinted lip balm in Apples. It’s fantastic!

What are the best and worst parts of modelling?

The best… the travelling. The worst…. travelling sans luggage.  Hopefully my bags show up on this trip before I have to go home again.

What is the biggest misconception about being a model?

Probably that we aren’t like normal girls.  We all have the same insecurities and the same day to day struggles as everyone else.

What is the best fashion tip you’ve picked up over years?

Adding a structured bag to any outfit is a great way to pull any look together

What are the wardrobe items you cant live without?

My black leather jacket and anything from Céline.

Who is your favourite fashion icon?

Goldie Hawn.

Who are your favourite people to follow on Instagram?

@designmilk, @casavoguebrasil, @stylemeromy

Will you get some downtime during your Sydney trip?

Very briefly. I went to the beach right off the plane.

What are your favourite bars/restaurants in Sydney?

Chat Thai is my favourite restaurant.  But unfortunately I don’t think I’m going to have time to go there on this trip.

What do you do in your downtime?

I’ve always been really active.  So biking, Ballet Beautiful, going for walks, I also love going to music concerts. And when I’m in Sydney I love to just hang out at the beach.

Biggest personal and career highlight?

Personal highlight was being on the show The League and doing improv comedy.  It’s my favourite thing to watch and so it’s really fun to have the chance to do it myself. My biggest career highlight was walking in Valentino’s last show in Rome.

What’s your dream job?

My dream job would be to host a show in Sydney so I can stay here for longer!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Hosting a show in Sydney… I definitely want to be living here.

Witchery – Erin Heatherton

3rd April, 2014

Witchery_HW14_09_161

I’m loving the new Witchery High Winter campaign featuring international model Erin Heatherton. The gorgeous Victoria’s Secret Angel showcases Witchery’s high winter range, which consists of a lusciously warm wardrobe. Clean lines, oversized cocooning and sleek long lengths are key silhouettes. Although this campaign was shot in black and white, expect to see shades of mulberry, winter whites, sensuous black and aqua pared back with metallic accents, luxe leathers and natural textures.

Eyes have it: Drinks with Erin Heatherton.

Victoria’s Secret ”Angel” Erin Heatherton has modelled for designers including Diane von Furstenberg, Oscar de la Renta and Tommy Hilfiger, and was in Australia to walk the runway for Osiris eyewear as part of the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival. The 24-year-old opened up to Kate Waterhouse on how she finds it hard to find balance and hopes to be seen for her inner beauty. But the subject of her former boyfriend, actor Leonardo DiCaprio, was strictly off limits.

Did you always want to be a model?

Never. I wanted to be a doctor but I was scouted when I was 17… and everything kind of changed really quickly. I never knew anything about the fashion industry. I played sport and I had a lot of other things on my mind, so I never had the opportunity to experience all this creativity. It’s really fun to see the behind-the-scenes of [the fashion industry] – that is really fascinating to me.

If you didn’t become a model, would you have become a doctor?

Oh, for sure, yeah. But my younger brother, he just graduated from NYU [New York University], so he followed the path I wanted to, so I kind of got to live life vicariously through him. But, oh well, I’m not missing out, I really love my lifestyle.

What’s been your biggest career highlight?

Working for Victoria’s Secret is definitely a highlight… Even when I started working for Victoria’s Secret, I never dreamed of becoming an ”Angel”. Another highlight was walking for the Valentino Couture show. It was his [Valentino Garavani’s] last couture show and just being a part of the fashion moment, piece of history, something I would tell my kids about, that’s really cool.

What’s the best part of your job?

I love meeting people and talking to people … and I love learning. And there is so much to learn from being in a new city and being surrounded by new people … It’s just really fascinating to learn about different people and their lives and how different people end up working in this creative field and how they feel about it.

What’s the worst part of your job?

[It] probably is finding a balance. Sometimes I want to just be like ”take me as I am” but it really is an image-based society we live in, it’s an image-based industry, and though I would love for all of us to look at each other from the inside out, it’s impossible. It’s very kind of ”little hippie” for thinking that, but that’s challenging for me to always be seen [on] the outside first, before the inside.

Are you buddies with former Victoria’s Secret ”Angel” Miranda Kerr?

Yes, she is amazing. I’ll always love her for showing me [the mockumentary TV series] Summer Heights High. One day on set [for Victoria’s Secret], I was playing comedy videos for hair and make-up and she is like, ”Oh, you have to see this,” and it is like the best thing ever. It’s one of my favourite shows of all time.

What do you do for fun?

I love concerts, I love being with my friends, listening to music, being at dinner parties and just normal – you know, 24-year-old stuff.

I noticed you have a ring on your engagement finger. Are you engaged?

No, it’s this ring. It only fits on this finger! [Laughs.]

Do you have a nice man in your life?

I don’t but I really like how it is right now. I love meeting people and the ”getting to know you” period. I love going on dates and talking.

Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?

Hopefully I’d be working on my own project. You know, I want to call some shots [laughs]. I want to work on stuff for the home… I’m a homebody but I make people come to me, like, ”Everyone just come over and we can have fun at my house.” I love to entertain.

Do you have a secret talent?

I can shoot a basket pretty well.
