The trends I loved at Fashion Week

26th May, 2022

I often like to play favourites when it comes to Fashion Week. I always have a mental list of looks I loved to trends I’m planning to embrace. Given the focus of Australian Fashion Week is resortwear, there’s always plenty of summery looks to fall in love with. This year was no exception. I saw so many fresh, modern, fun trends to get behind when the warm weather kicks in. If you’re a fan of prints, colour and flirty silhouettes then you’re definitely going to be happy with what’s to come. Check out a few of the standout Australian Fashion Week trends that caught my eye.

Suiting

Suiting has firmly planted itself as a trend for the upcoming season. If you’re not really a suit person, I definitely think the current crop, with ultra flattering silhouettes and fun prints will change you’re mind. It’s a great way to do a polished look with a healthy injection of fun.

Bold colours

You can expect colour to be dialled up plenty come spring/summer. From sunshine yellow to forest green and vibrant pinks, it’s all about turning up the saturation.

Print on print

I saw plenty of gorgeous prints throughout Fashion Week, and loved the print on print trend. It’s definitely a statement making look and one way to refresh an outfit by working two prints together.

Cut outs

I have always been a fan of cut outs so was happy to see that they’re still a firm fixture with many designers’ collections. A cut out is one way to add an injection of sexiness to a look, while being an interesting design feature and breaking up a block silhouette.

Shift dresses

I have quite the soft spot for shift dresses so was pleased to see them come down the runway a number of times. It’s such a simple, classic silhouette but I love the fresh spin they were given be featuring everything from embellishments to bold colours.

Maxis

Look for the maxi dress to take centre stage come spring/summer. Whether it’s a print or a bold hue, it’s definitely an easy go-to when we welcome the warm weather again.

Voluminous sleeve

There’s something about a voluminous sleeve that adds a touch of drama to any silhouette, whether it’s a dress, a top, a jacket… It instantly makes a statement and is one way to ensure that your look is anything but boring.

Mini skirts

If maxis aren’t your thing then you’ll be pleased to know that we can also expect hemlines to get shorter if Fashion Week was anything to go by. The modern mini looks fresh, and works beautifully when worn as a matching set. I’m definitely embracing this trend.

Tell me-which trends do you see yourself wearing?

6 looks I loved at New York Fashion Week

15th September, 2016

One of the things I love most about Fashion Week (here and overseas) is the major wardrobe inspiration it provides. I’ve often walked away with many an idea for an outfit or trend to watch out for and it’s great for breaking myself out of a wardrobe rut. New York Fashion Week as per usual has been an eventful few days from models fainting at the Yeezy show to Gigi Hadid’s collaboration with Tommy Hilfiger but without a doubt it always comes back to the fashion and these are six looks I particularly loved…

pleating-victoria-beckham

Victoria Beckham Spring/Summer 2017 Ready-to-Wear

Victoria Beckham: Pleating

Victoria Beckham has for the last few seasons been the go-to for a sexy wiggle dress but this season her show seemed to take on a more relaxed vibe. There was even some green crushed velvet thrown into the mix! What I loved most from her show however were the pleated skirts. I can imagine this working back with either a crisp white shirt or a cami for a work function or cocktails with the girls.

ruffles-altuzzara

Altuzzara Spring/Summer 2017 Ready-to-Wear

Altuzzara: Ruffles

Ruffles will without a doubt be a major trend to watch out for but this gorgeous floral look from Altuzzara has me wanting to adopt a bit of frill into my wardrobe. Prepare to see ruffles on everything from dresses to shirts.

crossover-detailing-proenza-schouler

Proenza Schouler Spring/Summer 2017 Ready-to-Wear

Proenza Schouler: Crossover detailing

Proenza Schouler’s show incorporated a lot of crossover detailing which added a great point of interest on most of the looks it sent down the runway. I loved this look as it seems to be an evolution of the current off the shoulder trend but with a little more structure.

scalloped-detailing-red-valentino

Red Valentino Spring/Summer 2017 Ready-to-Wear

Red Valentino: Scallop detailing

I’ve always found scallop detailing quite adorable and they seem to have made a comeback in swimwear but this look from Red Valentino’s presentation shows that they’ll be infiltrating a garment near you. I love the sheer detailing, too.

shirting-alexander-wang

Alexander Wang Spring/Summer 2017 Ready-to-Wear

Alexander Wang: Deconstructed shirting

Alexander Wang’s shows are usually quite boundary-pushing and this take on traditional shirting really took the conservative office wardrobe staple into edgier territory. I love a pinstripe shirt but when its reincarnated into something with a slightly more deconstructed feel it all of a sudden feels a lot more modern and fresh.

shoulder-details-jason-wu

Jason Wu Spring/Summer 2017 Ready-to-Wear

Jason Wu: Cold shoulder

I’m always on the look out for dresses I can wear to the races or big events so this look by Jason Wu really stuck with me. I loved the shoulder cut out detail topped with ruffled trim. In a navy, this dress ventures into more classic dressing territory but its finishing touches still help to maintain its slight romantic meets sexy feel.

Fashion, What I Wore

What I Wore: MBFWA Day Five

19th May, 2016

After a few days of quite feminine, floaty dresses I wanted to change gears a little and go for something a little more structured. A monochrome look is always a fave of mine because it’s understated and chic so I opted for a pair of black leather pants and a long white top (perfect for accommodating the bump!) and added a slightly futuristic touch with a silver clutch. My Balmain blazer has been a staple throughout this week and has proven itself to be one of those purchases that will last season after season for years to come.

WHAT I WORE: MBFWA DAY ONE

15th May, 2016

MBFWA kicked off with a bang! Toni Maticevski officially opened the week with a stunning runway show at The Cutaway at Barangaroo Reserve in Sydney. I opted for colour and pleats for Day One with this Stella McCartney skirt and top ensemble. It’s perfect for a growing baby bump as it is so comfortable and easy to wear. I look forward to having fun ‘styling the bump’ for the rest of the week.
