There’s always a trend every season that requires a little more thought as far as styling goes. This winter, I’d have to say it would be leather pants. The silhouette is a little more voluminous this time around and taps into the trend towards wide leg pants and jeans. If this trend makes you a little nervous as you’re not entirely sure how to wear it, then let me talk you through a few ways you can introduce a leather pant in your life quite seamlessly.
This is not the first time leather trousers have had a place in my wardrobe. Me and leather pants go way back, well leather leggings more precisely. I wear my leggings a lot during winter, and they even became an integral part of my pregnancy wardrobe as I liked that they were able to stretch, yet looked polished. But this time around, we’re working with a little more volume and more of a trouser profile so it’s going to require a different approach to how you’d style a legging. Here are some of my biggest tips…
Start with black
If you’re just trying this trend out for the first time, I would go with the safe option of black leather pants. It’s an easy colour to style and it’s ultra versatile. Once you’ve mastered black, then you could definitely branch out into other colours. I’m wearing a forest green pair above and I love the pop of colour they bring.
Wear them cropped
The sweet spot for a pair of leather trousers is when the hem ends at the ankle. Wearing them baggy so your shoes are mostly covered is quite a difficult look to pull off (if at all) as a leather pant in order to look flattering requires showing off a little flash of skin and shoe (particularly if you’re on the petite side). I’ve worn them with a pair of black heels above, but at this length I could also pair them with sneakers, slides or a loafer.
Go for oversized layers
The trend this season is towards embracing more volume. Big coats, boxy blazers, loose-ish button down shirts and t-shirts… it’s a great time to rock oversized silhouettes. These pieces work great with leather pants, as you could throw on a tee and a big coat or trench over the top and you have an instantly on trend look. Another way to work layers into the mix is to wear a big turtleneck or roll neck jumper and add a trench for a slightly more edgy look.
Tuck it in
Whether you’re doing a jumper, a shirt or t-shirt, most of the time, it will look much more polished and flattering if you tuck it into your pants. This gives you some definition in the waist which is ultra flattering, and helps to balance the volume that you have at the bottom.
Try going tonal
If you’re going for a coloured leather trouser, it’s definitely worth going for a tonal look. Opt for complementary pieces in the same colour family as your trouser, so in this instance, I went for a camel top to work with my beige pants. This looks really modern and sleek.
