How to style combat boots

18th August, 2021

If there’s one trend that’s been doing the rounds of late it’s the resurgence of the chunky combat boot. I remember they were a 90s staple but now they’ve made a comeback and they’ve become a firm fixture everywhere from the runway to Instagram. These days there a few different style iterations from the Chelsea style boot to lace-up Doc Martens style but either way it’s all about going big and bold. But how to style the combat boot that feels like you’re wearing it not it’s wearing you? They can be tricky to work with as you’ve really got to balance volume and proportions given the boot is the kind of style that’s more of a statement piece. I’ve recently added a pair of Stella McCartney boots to my autumn/winter wardrobe and I’ve been having fun experimenting with different looks. In the process, I’ve discovered a few things about styling them and key points to remember.

My Stella McCartney Chelsea style chunky boots

If you’re wanting to jump aboard this trend, I’m sharing a few of my tips below and some great examples of the boots being worn and worked back with different pieces. The main thing to remember is to have fun with it and don’t be afraid to go big and bold!

Consider hemlines

This style of boot is designed to be the focal point of a look so it works really well with shorter pieces. This look is sophisticated with the crisp white and tweed pieces but is instantly grounded with the boots. Also, experiment with what you pair them with. Working them back with shorts is unexpected but strikes the right balance between a look that’s slightly softer but has added edge in the form of the black boots.

Crop it

You can wear these boots with jeans and pants but make sure the length is quite cropped so you showcase the shoes. I think they work better when they’re able to shine and be the focal point. I think there’s also something quite fresh and contemporary about wearing a cropped pant with a bold choice of footwear.

Mix and match

Don’t be afraid to pair these shoes with slightly more feminine pieces or polished styles. I like the juxtaposition of the boots with a delicate, satin slip dress. The height of femininity with a little bit of edge. I think it’s also a great way to temper really classic styles and make them a little more modern. I wore mine with a beautiful belted coat and loved the contrast it provided.

What I Wore: Colour Block

11th June, 2019

Picking up great designer pieces on sale is always so satisfying and a Harrold’s sale is one I always make sure to check out. They stock all my favourite designers so I always end up finding great pieces at a fraction of the price. A great top I picked up at the sale was this red Balenciaga logo turtleneck. It’s a fun on trend addition to my wardrobe and the colour is bold and punchy, which is perfect for lifting a winter outfit. Also the ribbed style is great for adding a textural element to a look.

One shade I am really loving paired with red is pink. I think a vibrant iteration of the colour just works so beautifully with red. There’s something feminine and modern about it and I love how the colours are both so striking and the colour blocking effect can make an outfit pop. Plus who can resist a little lurex Stella McCartney number in such a fun hue?

I decided to work a little more pink into my outfit by pairing it with my Bulgari top handle bag. A structured bag is so on trend at the moment and I loved that ladylike touch it added to my look. During winter I’m all about ankle boots. My Balenciaga sock boots have lasted me a few seasons and they’re back again—proof that a great designer buy can last for plenty of years to come.

What I Wore: Monochrome

12th April, 2018

I think black and white is always a winning combination so it seemed fitting that I wore monochrome whilst on reporting duties for Seven Racing at The Championships. I also knew that I wanted to wear something clean and simple as I would be on camera and didn’t want anything too fussy. Whilst I gravitate towards wearing white because it’s always guaranteed to look fresh, what I loved most about this top and skirt combination by Stella McCartney were its finishing touches. The split sleeve, the ribbed texture, the ruffled waist trim—all of these elements made the set stand out and gave it a little personality. The combination all worked together to give my ensemble some depth without being too over the top.

In keeping with the monochrome theme I kept the rest of my accessories in the same colour palette. My favourite piece had to be the Nerida Winter headband. The statement bow at the back elevated it and gave it a sweet touch. I think it’s sometimes nice to have a big standout feature on the back for something different. Simple studded Alaïa heels and a chain strap Dior bag finished off the look and gave it a polished touch.

What I Wore: Australian Fashion Week 2017 Day Five

18th May, 2017

After yesterday’s vibrant look I wanted to dial it right back today and opted for a sleek monochrome ensemble for my last day at Fashion Week. I love a dress in crisp white—it’s just so effortless and classic. This Stella McCartney midi dress seemed perfect for today’s show at Bondi Beach, as it has a light and airy vibe, yet its structured silhouette makes it ideal for an industry event. I wanted to keep my accessories simple so I opted for my Stella McCartney clutch with star motif and the season’s must-have shoe style, the slimline sock boot. Sometimes keeping it simple just works.

WHAT I WORE: MBFWA DAY ONE

15th May, 2016

MBFWA kicked off with a bang! Toni Maticevski officially opened the week with a stunning runway show at The Cutaway at Barangaroo Reserve in Sydney. I opted for colour and pleats for Day One with this Stella McCartney skirt and top ensemble. It’s perfect for a growing baby bump as it is so comfortable and easy to wear. I look forward to having fun ‘styling the bump’ for the rest of the week.

Derby Day is all about monochrome and this year I decided to opted for an all-white outfit with accents of black. I had fallen in love with this look from Stella McCartney’s latest collection and wanted to wear something that had a 70s flair so this ensemble was perfect. The tailored flared pants and wide brimmed hat were a great way to mix up a traditional race day outfit. I love a white on white look but I have to admit that I spent the entire day trying to avoid puddles!

Lunch with Dion Lee

Lunch with Dion Lee

Dion Lee is one of the most exciting and sought after designers in Australian fashion and is releasing a one-off women’s collection for Target on July 2. I caught up with Lee to chat about the Dion Lee for Target range, his design process and aspirations to pursue film or sculpture.

How did your collaboration with Target come about?

Target approached me about doing collaboration about a year ago … I was considering how I would approach something like this and I was quite drawn to a performance-wear range, something that was quite athletic and incorporated a lot of the technical fabrications that I have within the collection, but doing it in a way that felt accessible and easy to the Target customer.

What is your design process?

It’s quite different for each collection. I suppose you are designing all the time and you are constantly seeing things when you travel. I try to explain to people that it’s kind of the collage that is going on in your head. You’re always inspired by new films, art, culture, and you are responding to what people around you are wearing and I suppose it’s the ideas that come from that.

Does the process differ when you are designing a collection for Target, compared to your own main line?

It’s very different compared to when designing for our main-line runway collection because [my main line] is a very specific product and is really about exploring each idea as beautifully and as elevated as we can, and this was about designing a product that is as inclusive as possible and speaking to a much broader audience. So there was a lot more consideration about the fabric, body shape and other things that all had to be taken into account.

Do you still get nervous when launching a new collection?

I do, definitely! And I think for this, it was a new capsule and something that I hadn’t done before so it did still feel that nervous process.

Is it just a capsule collection or will it continue?

It is just a capsule collection; it’s only in store for four weeks. But I’ve really enjoyed this category so I am open to what might happen.

You’re joined a long list of esteemed designers who have collaborated with Target, including Missoni, Roberto Cavalli and Stella McCartney. Do you expect a stampede when it hits stores?

[Laughs] I’m not sure, I suppose I hope so but I don’t think I’ll be going into store to watch!

What is a woman’s ultimate wardrobe essential?

A tailored black blazer is the most important element to a woman’s wardrobe. It’s a classic piece that works back with everything.

When you were younger did you always envisage your life the way it is today?

Definitely not. I think that the past few years have been pretty crazy and the brand is continuing to grow. I think the next thing for me is to continue to build the international business and spending more time overseas. I’m really excited about what’s next.

What are your plans internationally?

We are continuing to show in New York, which is really strong market for us, so it’s important to spend more time there and support the growth there.

Do you have plans to expand into other lines within your business?

Yes, definitely. We are working on accessories at the moment: eyewear, a shoe collection and also some other projects that I can’t talk about just yet. And I would love to work on men’s wear eventually. I’m just waiting on the right time to do that. It’s almost like a new business and I would need a whole team to manage that.

If you could dress anyone in your designs, who would it be?

I’d love to one day dress Cate Blanchett in the collection.

Your designs have been seen in the pages of American Vogue. What’s it like when you have to show your collection to Anna Wintour – is that daunting?

Yes, it’s very daunting [laughs]. I still get very nervous in those situations. I think that I am becoming more comfortable in those scenarios but it definitely takes some practice. It’s never not scary [laughs]!

What is she like?

She has a very intelligent perspective view on fashion and was very interested in speaking about my business and where my clothes were made and getting a real understanding to what kind of designer I was. She comes at it from a business perspective, which is great. You can see that from all the American designers she has supported; she’s very good at foresting them as really strong businesses.

Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?

Hopefully working between Australia and New York and continuing to work with new and exciting people and continuing to be really inspired by what I’m doing.

What do you do in your spare time?

I always try and do something that takes me away from my work. I try and go away a bit and make the most of my weekends. I went to Tasmania a couple of weekends ago and New Zealand a few weeks before that. I just try to explore and go to new places and do some hiking.

If you didn’t become a designer, what would you have done?

I would have explored film and potentially explored directing. I really love the creative-direction elements of my role … and trying to convey a strong feeling, and would love to explore that in film.

Will you ever pursue directing?

Yes, I would definitely love to do that. Film or sculpture, I would definitely love another creative profession that allowed me to explore the ideas [that I have] in a different way.

What are some of your favourite films?

I love  Michel Gondry films. He’s a French director, his films are often very abstract and, I suppose, surreal in ways, and I love things that mix an element of things that are quite realistic with techniques that are quite abstract and surreal.
