This simple staple is a fashion must-have

3rd March, 2023

White t-shirts, take a bow. We often focus on the shiny, attention-stealing aspects of our wardrobes that we often forget about the unsung heroes that can make most outfits work. One of them being the humble white t-shirt. For me, it’s the kind of basic staple that I rely upon constantly as I can wear it in myriad ways and it works for so many different occasions. I could wear a white tee under a blazer to a meeting, or pop it on over a pair of jeans and wear it to do the school run. It’s that versatile. I think everyone needs a good selection of white tees because…

It works for different dress codes

As I said, a white tee can be worn for most occasions and dress codes. Wear it to a formal setting with a nice pair of slacks and heels, or pop it on over a pair of shorts for a more casual off duty outfit. Either way, there’s really only a handful of instances where a white tee wouldn’t work.

It layers well

The appeal in a white tee is that it’s a neutral that works well layered with a variety of different pieces. I wear them throughout the year, whether it’s during summer with a pair of linen pants, or layered under a jumper or jacket during winter.

It looks polished

My general style is underpinned by the fact I like to look polished wherever I go. Believe it or not the white tee definitely helps me achieve this. Even though a t-shirt would be categorised as a casual staple, I think the crispness of a white tee elevates it from your average t-shirt and makes it look infinitely more put together.

How to choose a white t-shirt

It’s important to remember though that not all white t-shirts are of course created equal. You could spend hundreds of dollars on a t-shirt from a major designer or go the cheap and cheerful route from your local chain store. Either way, the main thing is to focus on the fit, quality and style. I am usually a mid-range person when it comes to tees, where I don’t want to spend a fortune, but I also want something with a bit more durability so I’m not averse to spending a bit more.

I have a few boxes that I like to tick such as the cotton is nice and sturdy (I’m not a huge fan of a flimsy fabric as I find it leans more towards a casual look, so takes away from the versatility a bit more) and that it can be worn tucked in or out and I usually opt for a crew neck neckline. I’m equally on board with both a sleeveless option and one with sleeves as it works with my wardrobe but obviously go with what works back with everything in your closet. I also like to make sure it’s not overly skin tight, but a bit more on the relaxed fit side as I think it works with my shape better.

So, while it doesn’t quite equate to traditional investment dressing, in that you spend a bit more on higher quality building blocks of your wardrobe, I do think white t-shirts fall into that category of pieces that help you build outfits, and are high in wearability. If they’re not already, definitely add them to your shopping list this year.

One white t-shirt, five ways

7th March, 2020

I’ve always considered a white t-shirt to be a wardrobe staple due to its versatility. I can be wearing a white t-shirt to do the school run one minute to attending a work function the next and be wearing the same tee. Whilst I love the fact it’s so simple to dress it up or down one of the reasons I love it so much is because it’s just so comfortable. Comfort is always key when it comes to my outfits and I love anything that’s unfussy and still maintains an element of polish. If you need further convincing then I’ve got five great looks that all incorporate a white tee, yet each with a distinctly different vibe…

This is an elevated take on a casual ensemble, and in this instance the classic combination of a white tee and jeans is given a bold touch with the addition of a pastel blazer and an on trend Bottega Veneta clutch.

You can never go wrong with a clean and simple silhouette. Here Harper and Harley’s Sara Crampton does what she does best—minimalist dressing featuring a classic white tee and a sleek black high waisted skirt.

Polished tailoring can sometimes feel a little too “done” so to give it a more relaxed vibe swap out a shirt for a plain white tee. It still has the sophisticated vibe you’re going for but will feel a lot more effortless.

A preppy look that is steered in a whole different direction with the addition of a white t-shirt. Paired with ballet flats and a neutral blazer it looks elegant, but the tee gives it a comfortable, carefree feel.

A white tee can look edgy when worked back with the right pieces. A sleek black blazer and leggings accompanied by 90s style mules gives this look an updated, fashion forward feel.

Fashion, What I Wore

My three can’t-live-without items

15th November, 2018

One of the questions I’m often asked is what items in my wardrobe I can’t live without. There are definitely plenty of pieces that form the foundations of a lot of my looks but if I were to really narrow it down there are three MVPs in my closet that I know I definitely would struggle without. They’re easily the most versatile pieces I own and I can work them back with virtually everything that I wear.

The thing with can-live-without items is that they’re not the most extravagant or up-to-the-minute designer items, they’re the pieces that work the hardest. They’re the pieces I reach for when I’m in autopilot mode because I know they’re guaranteed to work. It’s often critical to identify these pieces because it helps you drill down into your style and really know what forms most of your looks and as such what you should be investing your hard earned fashion dollars on.

So here are the three things I couldn’t get dressed without (and I bet they’re also already in your closet)…

A pair of great jeans

Denim is such an integral part of my wardrobe and I’m in it most days of the week. This is why for me, a pair of blue jeans in a flattering cut, cropped at just the right length is something that I’d struggle without. I can dress them up or down according to what I pair them with and these days, jeans are welcome almost everywhere so I definitely get value for money from a pair.

 A white tee

The humble white tee is a staple of most of my outfits. I use a t-shirt as a layering piece such as under a slip dress or pair it with a statement skirt or a pair of shorts in summer. And what’s great about it is that it’s also an inexpensive item that I could find a million and one uses for. I have a few white t-shirts in my wardrobe and they’re constantly on high rotation.

A black blazer

I can pair a simple black blazer with almost everything I own which makes it a piece that I couldn’t possibly do without. The good thing about a blazer is that it can act as the focal point of a look or be a support piece to pair with another statement element of an outfit making it supremely versatile. I can wear it to pretty much all occasions and it’s guaranteed to make whatever I’m wearing look chic.
