BEAUTY TREND: THE BABYDOLL

29th May, 2013

YSLBEAUTY4

The Baby Doll look focuses on a strong ‘cat’s eye’. From day to night, this look suits all occasions. I caught up with makeup artist Monika Bunic to find out how to achieve the perfect eyeliner shape to create that 1950’s old Hollywood glamour while keeping a modern edge with a fresh and luminous foundation glow.

What’s the key feature of the Babydoll Look?

The Babydoll Look is all about the wing-tipped eyeliner, and making a bold statement by creating a ‘cat’s eye’ shape above the top lashes. Start with a precision felt-tip eyeliner, like YSL’s ‘Effet Faux Cils Eyeliner’ in Black, and draw a strong, precise line that starts at the inner corner of the eye, and travels out to the edge of the eye, flicking up carefully at the end. For a striking look, thicken up the line by building it up stroke by stroke. Keep the rest of the eye simple with a light sweep of eye shadow close to the eye line, and lashings of YSL Shocking Black Mascara.

What are the other key products that will complement this look?

Every great make-up look starts with a radiant, luminous base, so make sure you look for a foundation that has a water base formulation. Yves Saint Laurent’s award-winning Le Teint Touche Éclat Foundation is perfect for this, created in a spectrum of 15 shades covering gold-base, pink-base and neutral-base skintones. For the ultimate make-up artist finish, apply using Yves Saint Laurent’s Foundation Brush, which features a tapered edge to ensure a flawless coverage. Leave your foundation to ‘set’ for a couple of minutes before using Touche Éclat to highlight and banish shadows under eyes, under the brow bone, down the bridge of the nose and on the cupid’s bow above the upper lip.

BEAUTY TREND: THE TUXEDO LOOK

14th May, 2013

The Tuxedo Look

A bold eye instantly creates glamour and this season ‘The Tuxedo Look’ by Yves Saint Laurent is right on trend. I caught up with makeup artist Monika Bunic to find out how to achieve the perfect smokey eye.

What eye looks have we seen on the catwalks this season?

This season is all about creating theatre with a smouldering, smokey eye and thick, voluminous lashes. Try using a palette such as Pure Chromatics Wet and Dry Number 12, with four shade variations for colour intensity. Use dry and sweep the lighter shade into the socket, then increase the intensity and use the darker shade wet, blending closer to the lash line.

What are the staple eye products we should invest in to keep us on trend this season?

YSL’s Eyeliner Effet Faux Cils makes creating a statement eye simple with a super user-friendly felt-tip application that gives high intensity definition. Just add your favourite YSL Mascara, and you’ve got the on-trend look of the season.

How do we best complement a bold eye with the rest of our look?

For this look the eye is certainly the star of the show. The best way to compliment this statement is by using a highlighting pen, such as YSL’s Touche Éclat, to highlight under the brow bone and underneath the eye to create light and disguise shadows. When used with Le Teint Touche Éclat, the new luminous foundation from Yves Saint Laurent, your radiant complexion will be the perfect platform for your eyes to sparkle.

TIPS

To create the sharpest line with your liquid eyeliner, first place a dot where the flick will end, then simply join the dots – you’ll get the ultimate precision every time!

BEAUTY TREND: COUTURE LOOK- COMPLEXION PERFECTION

2nd May, 2013

The Couture Look

For me, the most important aspect of makeup is the foundation base. I spoke with makeup artist Monika Bunic to find out how to achieve the perfect complexion.

The core of a sophisticated make up look is undoubtedly the perfect base, what is the secret to creating that dewy glow?

Foundation is one of those exceptional products that has the power to really make or break your entire make up look. The object is to find a foundation that enhances your complexion and brings luminosity to the skin as opposed to hiding the skin’s radiance under thick coverage. Le Teint Touch Éclat foundation was created after testing over 9000 women’s complexions to develop a range that caters to all skin tones and textures. Its unique formula has no opaque fillers, making it the only foundation to truly capture the light and enhance the natural glow of the skin.

We have all heard about the indispensable make-up product, Touche Éclat. What is the secret to this products resounding popularity?

The secret is its effectiveness. It’s a highlighting pen that truly does create light on the face. Its versatility means it can be used to erase signs of fatigue, disguise dark circles and fine lines, as well as to create definition by highlighting and contouring the face. It’s been the secret weapon of make-up artists for decades!

TIP

Finish your look by gently sweeping over the skin with the Yves Saint Laurent Polishing Brush (RRP $60) for the ultimate complexion perfection flawless finish.

BEAUTY TREND: PARISIAN LOOK

18th April, 2013

The Parisian Look

It’s all about shine when it comes to lips this season! Makeup artist Monika Bunic explains how to find the right shade and achieve the Parisian look.

We are seeing a lot of brights coming through for summer, how can we interpret this trend into our make up?

Playing with colour is the most exciting part of makeup and the quickest way to really add a pop of colour to your look is with a great lip shade. We’ve moved on from the Matt Finish lipstick and this season is all about the shine. For today’s look we used shade 6 from the new Rouge Volupte Shine collection by YSL, a signature look that strikes the perfect balance between bold colour and feminine shine.

How do we find the best bold shade to suit our personal complexion?

Yves Saint Laurent has three DNA colours that stem from our couture heritage – Rouge, Fuchsia and Orange. Across our 70 colour lip range there really is a shade variation of each signature colour to suit every complexion.

The latest twist on the statement lip craze is a brighter fuchsia hue. To get the look apply YSL Dessin des Levres lip liner first and then Rouge Pur Couture shade number 7.

TIP

To create the illusion of a fuller pout line the cupid bow above the lip with your Touche Éclat highlighting pen and blend gently with the tip of your index finger.

A sense of freedom bound by the idea of restraint.

Highlighting the collection is an in-house plaid design reworked in silk organza and cotton voile. Also integral to the collection is denim, which is taken in unexpected directions.

Tell me about the show and the inspiration behind it?

The show is always derived from the mood of a collection and this season the feeling is clean and contemporary.

At Zambesi we are inspired by an intuitive sense of style. We aim to develop our collections with the intention of providing unique pieces with a sense of freedom from trends.

What was your inspiration behind the S/S collection?

A great round trip to Japan, some pulls from an old book of sharks, and some architecture books about modern Morocco.

What textures, patterns and materials were used?

We refined what we would call our classic fabrics into three main groups, which were weighted cotton poplins, fine knitted jersey and a dyed canvas highlight.
