Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann and Kate Upton are banding together onscreen to seek revenge in their latest film, The Other Woman. The three play women all romantically linked to the same man: Mann plays his wife, Diaz his mistress and Upton his other, younger mistress. When the women discover one another, they join forces to get even. I caught up with the trio to chat about the film, marriage and monogamy.
You guys seemed to have a lot of fun on set working together. Did you know each other beforehand?
Cameron: We had [met]. But we didn’t know each other.
Leslie: Well, [Cameron and I] did work together; we were in the same movie 17 years ago. We met at the wrap party and we had so much fun together, but Cameron doesn’t remember! [Laughs]
The movie is all about the ”other woman”. Have you ever been the ”other woman” in a relationship?
Cameron: Not that we know of.
Kate: Doing all this press we kept saying, “No, no, no” and then we’re like, ”I guess, we could have not known”.
Kate, what was it like when you found out you had landed the role alongside Cameron and Leslie?
Kate: I was so excited because I really admire these two ladies, and they’re phenomenal actresses and it’s a great opportunity for the first role I ever have done.
Were you nervous?
Kate: The first day, of course I was nervous, but they made me feel comfortable right away and made me feel like I was in an environment where I could mess up. I was encouraged because, especially in comedy, you push your limits and you say silly things to try and get the right moment.
Leslie, you’ve been named the queen of comedy. Is it something you’ve always wanted to do, or do you like other genres?
Leslie: Well, I actually consider myself a dramatic actress [laughs]. I do, but everybody just laughs! In my head, I’m, like, playing the drama and then it comes out so weird for some reason; I’m not sure what it is. But when I first started, I would audition for dramatic parts and take myself [so] very seriously that other people didn’t.
Cameron, it was reported this week that you don’t believe in monogamy. Is that actually true?
Cameron: That’s not true, absolutely not … I’ve never said that … My character said: “Monogamy is impossible.” But the thing is that monogamy is totally possible. I think that people can absolutely be monogamous. I think it’s a challenging thing to be monogamous for your entire life. When people say ”I do”, I don’t think they quite know what they’re getting themselves into, and I think that it’s a really challenging thing. I know every person that I know who has been in a long-term monogamous relationship says the same thing – that it’s a really difficult thing to do. It doesn’t mean that it’s not possible.
So you are open to marriage?
Cameron: I don’t think that monogamy and marriage are mutually exclusive. They don’t have to be the same thing. I’ve been monogamous in every single relationship I have been in [but] I didn’t get married. Just because I’m in a monogamous relationship doesn’t mean that I’m married or going to get married ever. Who knows? I don’t know what’s going to happen. I really have no idea; anything could happen, which is so exciting.
You might find love while you’re here!
Cameron: You never know. It’s so exciting. I love it. Life is amazing like that.
Kate: I hope not. Then you’ll move to Australia!
Leslie: Yeah that would suck! [Laughs]
Cameron: I love Australia, but it’s very far away.
What was it about this film, when you read the script, that made you know you wanted to be involved?
Cameron: Usually this kind of story is three women end up hating each other if they find out that they are all involved with the same man. They all fight over the man. And I loved that it was about female friendship.
Leslie: And it was written by a woman and so it feels a little more truthful to what women might do … whereas sometimes scripts written by – I know I’m not supposed to say this, but I’m going to – a man, they like to perpetuate this idea of women kind of fighting over them.
Kate, you have a hugely successful modelling career, where do your priorities lie? Do you want to continue into films?
Kate: Well, I think that’s what’s so exciting about the career that I have, is that modeling will always be a part of my life, even if I’m on a film there is always an aspect to [modeling] like doing photo shoots for posters or something… So I think that both will be in my life pretty much the same amount. But I like to focus on whatever I put my mind to. So if I’m doing a film then maybe modelling might take the back burner and vice versa.
Kate, you’ve been named one of the sexiest women alive. What’s that like?
Leslie: It’s really hard. [Others laugh.] I struggle to really deal with it. My kids are like, “Mum, why are you so sexy?”, and I’m, like, “Deal with it!”.
Kate: Oh! Is that [question] for me? I think that it’s a compliment. I appreciate people appreciating what I do, but I would rather be known as a happy person than a sexy person.
What are you doing during your time off in Sydney?
Cameron: Eat.
Leslie: Eat and shop … I’d like to get to Rockpool and Spice Temple.
