A former Miss Universe Australia, Jesinta Campbell, is gearing up to run the The Sun-Herald City2Surf presented by Westpac next Sunday. The 22-year-old TV presenter tells Kate Waterhouse about preparing for the big race, staying away from the internet, and those engagement rumours with her boyfriend, Lance “Buddy” Franklin of the Sydney Swans.
What’s your involvement with the City2Surf?
I’ve come on board as the ambassador for Westpac. I think for me the biggest thing was to raise the awareness and funds for the Westpac Life Saver Helicopter rescue service. Growing up on the Gold Coast, the Westpac chopper was always in the skies patrolling the beaches, so it’s something I’m very familiar with. They do such amazing work. So for me it was just a great cause and a great way to stay motivated and fit.
What has been your training regime in the lead-up to the big race?
I upped my running. I run on the treadmill, I run on the soft sand, I run on the road, just so that I’ve got an overall fitness. I never actually run the full 14 kilometres because I find that on the day you have so much adrenaline and there is so much excitement that that will get you across the line. Westpac has also had the SongFit app that’s got a training program on it as well, so I’ve been following that.
Is Buddy going to be running the City2Surf with you?
Absolutely not [laughs]. I never exercise in front of Budd. Budd is very much the professional in our household and I’m very much the amateur!
But you are both very athletic. Do you ever train together?
We don’t do any training together whatsoever. I just do my own little thing. He trains all day, every day. He spends eight hours at the [Swans] club essentially working out, stretching. So the last thing he really wants to do is get home and go for another run. He just wants to relax. We walk the dog every single day together, but no running.
Are you a big Swans supporter?
I am now, I have no choice! [Laughs] I’ve been to most of the games. I think I’ve only missed three games this year. I really enjoy it. I go to the football with his parents and my parents. So it’s always a nice time to catch up with the family. Footy time is family time. The [Swans] are doing really well this year so it’s great to see him doing well. Hopefully they can continue that and win the grand final.
You are both very much in the public eye. How do you both cope with that?
It’s kind of funny because I suppose we just live in our own worlds. Everything else that kind of happens outside is noise. A few weeks ago I had all these messages saying, “Oh my gosh, you’re engaged. Congratulations.” I had no idea what they were talking about. I was like, “Oh my gosh, no!” We stay off the internet, we don’t really read newspapers or the magazines because of that, but we do have a laugh when we get messages like that. But I suppose it’s just part of it. We both have jobs that are in the public eye but I don’t know what the interest is. It kind of baffles me.
What’s the strangest rumour you’ve read about yourself?
Probably the engagement one. That was crazy. And then some magazine said that all I ate was chickpeas!
It must be so strange to always read things about yourself. What would you say is the biggest misconception about you?
People think we live this party lifestyle, which is completely the opposite. We’re probably the two most boring people when it comes to going out. We never go out. We’re at home every single night. We just work hard and get on with our lives.
Out of all your modelling, ambassador and TV work commitments, where do your priorities lie?
I really love television. TV definitely for me is my favourite, and especially Getaway. That is so much fun and you always go away with the most amazing crew and you get to see parts of the world that sometimes you would never even dream of visiting. So that’s probably my favourite part of my job.
What’s next in the pipeline for you?
I’m working on a few projects at the moment [and] some online material. I get asked so many questions by people like “What foundation do you use?” or “How do you get your hair like that?” or “What do you eat for breakfast?” so I thought the best place for me to tell people was through online videos. They’ll just go up on YouTube in the next month or so. We’re just creating the content at the moment. They’re nothing fancy; it’s literally me at home welcoming people into my world. So I’m looking forward to just putting those up and sharing that with people. I’m enjoying working on my own little projects and plodding away with my work on TV and my ambassadorships with Jeep, ASICS, Crown and Harris Scarfe. We’ve got all the campaigns coming up for them, which is exciting.
Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?
I hope to keep expanding on what it is that I’m doing and I hope I can still continue the work that I’m doing. I love every aspect of my job. I hope I get to travel more. I really want to travel more next year. That’s like a big goal for me. So travelling more and seeing more of the world. You never really know how life is going to turn out. I hope that I’m still as happy in five years’ time.
WE WENT TO a picnic at Tamarama.
WE ATE Sonoma muesli, yoghurt and strawberries.
WE DRANK a spinach, cucumber, lettuce, celery, kale, parsley and lemon pressed juice.
