Animal print accessories are an easy way to change up a look

10th August, 2018

I’ve had my fair share of animal print moments (see below for proof). I love it simply because it’s such a fun and lively print that can elevate an outfit and give it a bit of edge. I’ve incorporated it into my looks both clothes and accessories-wise and have found it to be equally as effective. However if you’re after a subtle nod to it then a great bag or a beautiful scarf is the best way to incorporate it into a look as it acts as an accent piece that won’t overwhelm. It’s also the kind of print that is surprisingly versatile. Whether you’re going for a polished neutral feel, embracing bold and vibrant or something understated and casual I can guarantee animal print will work with all of them. To help you dip your toe into this trend I’ve rounded up a few animal print buys below that will surely allow you to take any ensemble for a bit of a walk on the wild side.

A few animal print style rules to remember
  • Don’t wear it from head to toe. It can look chaotic and just a bit overwhelming.
  • Use it as a highlight piece. You can keep the rest of your look quite pared back and just add a touch of boldness with an animal print accessory.
  • Stick to one animal print at a time. It can be a little tricky to work two animal prints in a single look and have it look cohesive so best to choose one and run with it.
  • Consider it a way to add a bit of interest to an outfit. If you’re feeling that what you’re wearing is lacking a little something don’t be afraid to introduce a little animal print.

Now, here are a few ways to add it to your next look…

The mini crossbody bag is the accessory you never knew you always needed

29th July, 2018

I’m all for a bag that leaves my hands free. In fact I’ve made this a criteria for most of my bags since having kids as I need all the free hands I can get! Whilst I’ve got a few satchel bags in my collection that are great for casual everyday use, I’ve taken to extending the style into my dressier looks, which is why I’m a huge fan of the mini crossbody bag. It’s the perfect alternative to a clutch for evenings out or for a dressy day time event and is ideal for functions such as the races for example when I need to leave my hands free to shake hands or hold a canape or glass of champagne. That said it’s also the ideal lightweight option for those days when you’re running around and don’t want to have to deal with a huge, heavy bag. There are a range of different styles to suit any occasion, whether it’s a structured look for work or one with a statement detail perfectly suited for event dressing. Good things come in small packages after all…

Found! Designer buys that won’t break the bank

20th July, 2018

There’s nothing quite like a designer buy—the beautiful packaging, the thrill of unwrapping it, the fun of taking it out on its first outing however it can also be quite the financial outlay. Whilst I am a fan of saving up for a quality designer purchase which I’ve covered on the blog in the past, it’s also possible to nab yourself a little Gucci or Valentino of your every own without dropping a four figure sum on it. In fact, there are some great buys out there that are not only a great, practical addition to your wardrobe but also of the high quality that you’d expect from snapping up something from one of the world’s best luxury brands. So if you’ve got your heart set on a splurge item I’ve done an edit of the best luxe purchases worth considering. Whether it’s a beautiful card holder or a gorgeous scarf, my edit of designer buys under $500 will help satisfy your need for a little elevated retail therapy.

Small sunglasses are the accessories update your wardrobe needs

22nd June, 2018

Back in the 90s small frames were huge. Then along came oversized sunnies and we’ve been all about them ever since. However it seems the tide is starting to turn and we’re seeing more and more the resurgence of this eyewear trend. Everyone from Bella Hadid to Kim Kardashian (whose husband Kanye West apparently sent her an email telling her to switch to smaller frames) to Rihanna have been spotted wearing small sunglasses.

Admittedly after so many years of wearing big sunnies it takes a bit of getting used to as the silhouette is such a departure from our usual go-to glasses however I’ve definitely become a fan. Despite their diminutive size they’re big on impact. The dimensions on tiny sunglasses make them a definite statement piece and add an edgy, almost futuristic vibe to a look. I’ve been wearing them of late whether in a cat eye style or oval shape and gave them a definite workout during Fashion Week (where I have to say, I saw this trend out in force). Whilst classic black always works I’ve also been trying them in different colours which definitely adds a fun element to any outfit. I’ve always embraced sunglasses as a finishing touch to an ensemble and this season, it seems it’s all about downsizing.

Want to wear this trend? I’ve rounded up a few of my favourite picks below plus I’m sharing my tops tips on how to style them

Embrace colour

Adopt small frames in a rainbow of colours. I love this Adam Selman for Le Specs pair as the colour works beautifully against both bright vibrant tones or muted shades. If you’re also worried about this style making you look like you walked off the set of The Matrix then never fear as the colour helps soften the silhouette and make them look quirky and playful.

Dress them up or down

Can you wear small sunglasses with a suit equally as well as you can with jeans and a tee? Yes! In fact, due to their minimalist style and shape, these sunnies can be paired with virtually anything in your wardrobe. Rihanna wore them on the red carpet with a ball gown so you can bet these frames can accompany you on a coffee run, out to lunch or to a big event.

Go bold with your outfit

What I like about small sunglasses is they are a statement piece. I think the shape and silhouette really make them quite a bold accessory and it might sound counterintuitive but this makes them the perfect item to work back with striking pieces in your wardrobe. Case in point: I wore them with a feathered denim jacket and a PVC skirt without my entire look seeming too over the top.

My favourite finishing touch to an outfit—and it’s so easy to change it up

6th June, 2018

Whether it’s a bejewelled cat eye or classic aviators, there’s no doubt that sunglasses are one of the easiest ways to update an outfit. I’ve built up quite the collection over the years as I have a bit of a weakness for amazing frames! That said, it really as an accessory that can easily change any look. By switching up my eyewear I can change the whole vibe of my outfit in seconds. They’re definitely a key consideration when I’m planning my street style outfits. And I put as much thought into them when I’m pulling together a look for an event as I do my shoes and jewellery.

Here are a few of my current faves.

Small frames

Small frame sunglasses are right on trend at the moment and given their modern silhouette I find they add a little edge to an outfit.

Coloured frames

I love to have fun with vibrant colours when it comes to my sunglasses. The bold pink pair above can really add a playful touch to a look and are one way to make a strong statement.

Classic frames

Gold metal frames have been around for eons and for this reason they’re a reliable go-to. They also work back with almost everything in my wardrobe so they often get a workout.

Cat eye frames

I’ve always loved cat eye sunglasses as they have an old Hollywood feel about them. These days they’ve been updated with embellishments, come in a rainbow of colours and are an ideal way to transform any look.

Sleek black frames

A pair of classic black frames never goes astray. Whatever the shape, black eyewear it always gives an outfit a sleek, modern vibe.

Round frames

The shape is a little old school and I love that they’re a little bit different to your standard sunglasses. Round frames are quite fun and can work with everything from a dressy ensemble to an off duty outfit for the weekend.

Embellished frames

I adore statement sunglasses. Show me anything with embellishment and I’m sold. This pair with its jewelled rim is one such example when the right frames can really take an outfit next-level.

I’m all about boots in winter—these are a few of my fave picks

2nd June, 2018

I buy a pair of winter boots at the start of the season to take me through the next few months

Every winter I make a point of going in search of new boots. I update my shoe collection every season and for the cooler months I always go for a simple ankle boot to freshen up my look. I think it’s the kind of style that’s easily adaptable to a multitude of different outfits and it really does take me through the season.

The great thing with ankle boots is that they come in so many different styles that it’s easy to find a pair that works with your own aesthetic. I always go for a simple, streamlined silhouette with a heel but this season I’ve found myself gravitating towards something a little edgier. I wore the above Maje boots to Fashion Week and not only were they best shoe decision from a comfort perspective they also helped ground my look. I was wearing quite a feminine outfit and by pairing it with flat boots it gave it a slightly tougher vibe and really took it in a different direction, which I love.

Put your best foot forward this winter with a pair of ankle boots

When it comes to choosing boots I think it’s key to start where every fashion purchase should start: your wardrobe. Do a scan of the shoes that you currently own and also your winter looks and see what’s lacking and what boot style can easily be paired with everything. Are you in need of a sophisticated heeled ankle boot? Do you need flat boots to wear with your casual ensembles? You’ll find that boots will take you through the next few months quite easily but it’s important to pinpoint the right style from the very beginning.

If you’re currently in the market for winter boots I’ve rounded up a few that will update your current wardrobe and make it on trend.

The one thing I can’t get enough of at the moment

2nd May, 2018

Do you ever go through phases where you just absolutely can’t get enough of one particular look or trend? I’m experiencing that at the moment with loafers. I am wearing them constantly. I’m currently favouring backless styles by Gucci including the pair above which have a really beautiful floral motif. One of the key reasons I’m loving them is because of their sheer versatility. Any shoe that can be worked back with multiple looks is a winner in my book. And loafers are the kind of thing that you can pair with everything from jeans to dresses and skirts and they work equally as well with each.

While a plain black pair is going to take you far as they will go with virtually anything it’s also worth considering a vibrant style. There are so many options out there right now, from coloured gingham to glitter and animal print if you want to have a little more fun with your footwear. No matter the colour or print, the major benefit of loafers is that they’re so comfortable. So it’s time to give your feet a break and make some room in your life for a pair, I guarantee that you’ll wonder how you ever did without them.

Meet Espie Roche – the new luxe Australian bag brand you’re going to love

11th April, 2018

Quality is so important to me so I love it when I discover brands that are not only doing beautifully well made pieces but that they also have a link close to home. Espie Roche is the brainchild of Australians Hermione Espie Underwood and Airlie and Alexandra Roche Hamilton who looked to their mothers love of classic, longlasting handbags as inspiration throughout the creative process. To honour this journey they decided to use their mothers’ respective maiden names to craft the moniker, Espie Roche. Each piece in the range is made in Italy with quality leather and hardware and all four handbag designs are simple, elegant and designed to be a forever piece. Bespoke orders are also available if you’re really after a bag that’s all your own.

When I asked Hermione, Airlie and Alexandra about the brand’s aesthetic they describe it as being “about discretion and the elegance of simplicity. Our pieces are not overtly branded, we want you to wear the bag, not for the bag to wear you!” This really resonated with me as I always gravitate towards bags that are understated and quite simple and in a way, that to me, is what makes them stand out. I want pieces that won’t date and that I know I can pass down to my daughters when they’re older.

The brand’s hero piece is the Arno satchel, which I’m wearing below. Not only is it a great size and shape, it’s got my favourite bag criteria covered in that I’m able to wear it in multiple ways. The bag comes with a detachable strap so I can wear it as a satchel for days when I’m busy running around, a top-handle bag for dressy events and a clutch for an evening out. Also, I love the grey hue which is understated and so wearable. I know I’ll be able to pair this with multiple outfits with minimal fuss. There is a lovely timeless feel to the style which is important to me as I’m all about accessories that have longevity and are destined to become a wardrobe staple—something that Espie Roche echoes through and through.

New collab to love: The Daily Edited x Dion Lee

16th March, 2018

Dion Lee with the tote from his collection with The Daily Edited

Dion Lee is one of my favourite designers and I’ve worn pieces from his label more times than I can count. His aesthetic is always clean, sophisticated and with a fashion forward spin that makes his designs instantly unique. So whenever he launches anything new, I always think it’s worth sitting up and taking notice. You can bet it’s guaranteed to be on point, especially when it’s a collaboration with one of Australia’s most popular accessories brands, The Daily Edited.

Last year Dion launched his first men’s line and says he was interested in building out the brand to include accessories. “Working with The Daily Edited seemed like an opportunity to really create accessories that felt like they were helping me tell the story of the men’s character,” says Dion. Of the collection, The Daily Edited’s co- founder Alyce Tran says, “I’ve always loved his line and we have collaborated with other designers before so when the opportunity to work with Dion came up we wanted to take the collaboration in a different direction to our previous collaborations with a menswear capsule.”

The range includes three main designs – a messenger bag, a tote bag and wash bag in a chic colour palette of black, navy and khaki. “With men’s wear it’s much more intuitive and personal and it’s more about what I would wear and what I’m attracted to,” says Dion. “The palette was really about things that I would put together and colours that I would work back into my own wardrobe.”

Whilst the range is technically a men’s line the designs are so minimalist that I think it could work equally as well in a woman’s wardrobe. So if you’re looking to spoil the man in your life or are just in the market for a stylish new bag, this is one collab definitely worth checking out.
