Small sunglasses are the accessories update your wardrobe needs

22nd June, 2018

Back in the 90s small frames were huge. Then along came oversized sunnies and we’ve been all about them ever since. However it seems the tide is starting to turn and we’re seeing more and more the resurgence of this eyewear trend. Everyone from Bella Hadid to Kim Kardashian (whose husband Kanye West apparently sent her an email telling her to switch to smaller frames) to Rihanna have been spotted wearing small sunglasses.

Admittedly after so many years of wearing big sunnies it takes a bit of getting used to as the silhouette is such a departure from our usual go-to glasses however I’ve definitely become a fan. Despite their diminutive size they’re big on impact. The dimensions on tiny sunglasses make them a definite statement piece and add an edgy, almost futuristic vibe to a look. I’ve been wearing them of late whether in a cat eye style or oval shape and gave them a definite workout during Fashion Week (where I have to say, I saw this trend out in force). Whilst classic black always works I’ve also been trying them in different colours which definitely adds a fun element to any outfit. I’ve always embraced sunglasses as a finishing touch to an ensemble and this season, it seems it’s all about downsizing.

Want to wear this trend? I’ve rounded up a few of my favourite picks below plus I’m sharing my tops tips on how to style them

Embrace colour

Adopt small frames in a rainbow of colours. I love this Adam Selman for Le Specs pair as the colour works beautifully against both bright vibrant tones or muted shades. If you’re also worried about this style making you look like you walked off the set of The Matrix then never fear as the colour helps soften the silhouette and make them look quirky and playful.

Dress them up or down

Can you wear small sunglasses with a suit equally as well as you can with jeans and a tee? Yes! In fact, due to their minimalist style and shape, these sunnies can be paired with virtually anything in your wardrobe. Rihanna wore them on the red carpet with a ball gown so you can bet these frames can accompany you on a coffee run, out to lunch or to a big event.

Go bold with your outfit

What I like about small sunglasses is they are a statement piece. I think the shape and silhouette really make them quite a bold accessory and it might sound counterintuitive but this makes them the perfect item to work back with striking pieces in your wardrobe. Case in point: I wore them with a feathered denim jacket and a PVC skirt without my entire look seeming too over the top.
