Hemlines have moved a lot in the last few months and while the mini will always be a mainstay, the current silhouette is one that has a bit more fabric! Maxi skirts are definitely having a moment whether it’s in a formal sense at the races or as a floaty resortwear staple it’s all about a more demure silhouette. One way to dip your toe into this trend is via the denim skirt.
A denim skirt has always been one of those staples that can be found in most women’s closets as it’s always such an easy piece to wear. I know I’ve got a few iterations of it and I always get plenty of wear out of each of them. However if you want to give the trusty denim skirt a refresh this summer, consider a denim skirt in a midi or maxi length. It looks a little more polished, and gives a more elegant feel compared to the more casual, playful vibe of a mini. A word of warning to my fellow petite women out there about length: often a midi is a slightly easier silhouette to wear on a smaller/shorter frame rather than a maxi. A maxi can look like a lot of fabric on a petite person so if you’re not sure, it’s best to try on in store rather than just purchasing online. There are some longer silhouettes that can work, but not all so you want to give it a roadtest before committing.
You can dress a denim skirt up or down (see below for examples) so it’s a good one to have on hand if you want to add an on trend piece to your current summer wardrobe. With all that length to contend with, it’s a good idea to keep things quite streamlined at the top. Think a tank or tee and then you can layer pieces on top such as a blazer. Alternatively I’ve also seen it worn in a more dressy way with a button down shirt. As far as footwear goes, a pointy flat slingback is a great match or a chunky sandal or thong a la The Row Ginza shoe. Equally as good is a sneaker like the Adidas Samba or a delicate, minimalist heel like this.
The new denim skirt is one way to take your skirt game in a different direction this season. It’s such an easy way to refresh a look and so easy to mix and match with the rest of your wardrobe. Why not give it a try?
