What I Wore: Power Suit

27th March, 2018

I think every woman should own at least one great suit. There’s just something inherently commanding about wearing one. Whilst traditional suits in classic colours such as black and navy are great, especially when in a more corporate setting, I love being able to push the boundaries a little more given that I work in largely creative settings a lot of the time. This is why this Rebecca Vallance suit and I are a match made in heaven. The colour, the fit, the style are all a fashionable take on a long standing classic.

The double breasted jacket is one that’s had a serious resurgence over the last few years and is always such a flattering fit. When paired with wide leg suit pants it helps give a streamlined silhouette up top which is great for when you’re more on the petite side like me. The pale blue hue of the suit with contrasting gold buttons helps lift my overall look and gives it a more fashion forward edge.

I decided to pair this suit with simple black studded Alaïa heels and Chanel clutch to provide some contrast without being too overwhelming. I find plain black accessories are always a reliable go-to when you want an outfit to have a timeless feel. However I did want to have a little fun too! My Chloe round frame sunglasses, I think, are an unexpected finishing detail for such a classic look and help give it a modern touch.

WHAT I WORE

17th April, 2013

On day five of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia I wore a Camilla and Marc look from their SS13/14 collection. I love the unique details of this dress, including the cut-out back and the asymmetrical hemline with black lining. I added my Alaia heels and Proenza Schouler clutch and I was set to take on the final day of MBFWA!

DATE WITH KATE: TAMMIN SURSOK

Actress Tammin Sursok has come a long way since playing the role of Dani Sutherland on Home and Away. Since moving to the US six years ago, Sursok has starred in a series of hit TV shows including The Young and the Restless and Hannah Montana, and is now on the popular American teen drama Pretty Little Liars. I caught up with the 29-year-old to talk about life abroad, working alongside Miley Cyrus and the struggles to make it in Hollywood.

Tell me a day in the life of you.

Each day is a 5am wake-up call. We shoot [Pretty Little Liars] at Warner Bros until about 6.30pm and I then study photography at UCLA at nights. On weekends I’m usually relaxing with my husband and our four dogs.

Tammin Sursok

You have found so much success in LA. Did it all just fall into place for you?

No, it was probably the toughest thing I’ve ever done in my life. I went over there with no job security and no family or friends. I spent a whole year out of work, I went to 1000 auditions and I always heard ”no”, but a measure of success is how you handle disappointments and keep going. It’s definitely a very scary and tough business to be in and it takes a lot of resilience and it takes a person who is willing to put themselves through the torture … You have to keep on moving and you have to believe in yourself and you have to know what you’re capable of. People can say success has come easy for me but they don’t see the work behind it.

Tell me about your character on Pretty Little Liars.

I play a visually impaired villain. It’s a meaty role for me, as I normally play the girl next door. When we started the show we didn’t really know how successful it would be. It’s based on a book series, so we already had a built audience, but it’s really found a cult following. We just got picked up for season five. The show is definitely going very smoothly right now.

What was it like to land a role on such an iconic daytime TV show as The Young and the Restless when you first moved to the US?

It was my first big show since Home and Away, so I was relieved that someone hired me [laughs]. I actually watch the show, so it was surreal to be on the set that I had grown up with. It got me an agent and it got me a visa to work in America so I’m very thankful for that show. I learnt a lot so it was very sad to leave … but it was time to move on.

What was it like to then work for the Disney Channel?

It was actually one of the most exciting experiences because people don’t realise that those sitcoms are filmed and shot in front of a live studio audience, so it’s like live theatre. We would rehearse all week and then we would shoot … on a Friday night.

Are you still in contact with your co-star, Miley Cyrus?

No, I think everyone just moved on. When you work over there you spend a lot of time on set and don’t have much time for a social life. She is really talented and she is really funny, so it was great to be around the energy.

What’s the first thing you do when you come back home?

I have a really awesome Australian coffee and have a piece of barramundi and I see my parents. I look forward to that.

Will you ever move back to Australia?

My husband and I are talking about having kids at some point and I would love my kids to be schooled in Australia. I went to a school called Ravenswood on the north shore, so hopefully they can be schooled there.

Tammin Sursok

You had a Billboard top-100 hit in the US; will you continue your singing career?

At the moment I don’t have the time. But it’s definitely in my blood, so I would never say never, but it just takes time. If I have a break [from acting] it’s definitely something to be explored.

What’s next in the pipeline?

My husband and I have a production company and we just had our first film get into [the] American film festival Tribeca and we just got distribution in the States. We also wrote a movie together and we are just putting the final pieces together, plus we have two TV shows in development right now in the States and hopefully one of them we can bridge to Australia because it has a lot of Australian content in it.

FASHION WEEK SNEAK PEEK: VANISHING ELEPHANT SS13/14

10th April, 2013
Vanishing Elephant SS 13/14

Vanishing Elephant SS 13/14

It’s Day 3 of MBFWA and Vanishing Elephant is set to hit the runway this afternoon. Here is an exclusive preview look, along with a Q&A on the inspirations behind the collection.

Spring/summer 2013/14 collection title:

Fast cars, late night bars, early days, summer haze or Spring Summer ’13.

What was your inspiration behind the S/S collection?

A great round trip to Japan, some pulls from an old book of sharks, and some architecture books about modern Morocco.

What textures, patterns and materials were used?

We refined what we would call our classic fabrics into three main groups, which were weighted cotton poplins, fine knitted jersey and a dyed canvas highlight.

Tell me about the show and the inspiration behind it?

It’s a dark space that will be a sharp contrast against the clothes. It’s going to be upbeat.

What do you think are the major upcoming trends for S/S?

We are not trend driven, we’d like to see guys happy to wear a button up to dinner, a girl walking to work in a pantsuit and heels and the ease of mixing colour with print.

What is your favourite fashion week memory?

United nations karaoke last year at the end of the week with friends from New Zealand, the States and Japan.

What is next in the pipeline after MBFWA wraps?

Opening our first Sydney shop and lowering stress levels.

FASHION WEEK SNEAK PEEK: CAMILLA AND MARC SS13/14

8th April, 2013
Camilla and Marc SS13/14

Camilla and Marc SS13/14

Camilla and Marc will kick-start Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia today with their 10th anniversary show. Here is an exclusive sneak peek of one of their looks hitting the runway and a Q&A with Camilla Freeman Topper and Marc Freeman on their inspirations behind the collection.

Spring/summer 13/14 collection title:

Concentric

What was the inspiration behind collection?

For the inspiration of our SS 13 collection we took cues from the Russian Matryoshka doll to interpret and symbolise peeling back the label’s layered past. The collection brings together elements from our history with a strong look to our future.

What textures, patterns and materials were used?

This season we have worked in depth with textured elements such as metallic jacquards and embossed snake leather. The collection also incorporates a modernized animal print, silk netting and woven silk twills.

Tell me about the show and the inspiration behind it.

This year is our 10 year anniversary and the show reflects that. It brings together the brands signature elements of elegance and luxe touches with a modern edge and eye to the future. The set includes a herringbone parquet wood floor with suspended Perspex pieces creating a roof for the runway. We have always been inspired by architecture and interiors so it was important to us that these elements where reflected through the set.

What do you think are the major upcoming trends for Spring/Summer?

Oversized tailoring, white and silver, and flat shoes in every possible variation.

What is your favourite fashion week memory?

The first time we opened fashion week. It was a seminal moment for us.

What is next in the pipeline after MBFWA wraps?

First we want to ensure we celebrate our 10-year anniversary with our team, friends and family! Then once Fashion Week wraps up we will begin working on our Resort collection and focus on our plans for retail expansion and international growth.
