Fashion profile: Anthony Cuthbertson, creative director, sass & bide

Taking over as creative director of an iconic Australian fashion label such as sass & bide is no small feat. Fresh from debuting his first collection for the label at London Fashion Week, Anthony Cuthbertson makes it look oh-so easy…

On taking over the design direction of sass & bide..

It is such an incredible honour! sass & bide is such an important part in the history of Australian fashion and it is such a privilege to now be part of the story. I’m really excited about the future and what I can bring to the brand and looking forward to the journey.

Debuting his first collection…

It was wonderful; it felt like we were taking the brand full circle by returning to our roots from where we first started in Portobello Markets some 15 years ago. As a Brit, it was also a lovely feeling to see my family and friends in the audience and sharing that special moment with them.

Fave piece in the collection…

That’s like picking a favourite child! Far too hard to choose… But I do think the heavily embellished bullet leggings (below) as well as the return of the rats (below) are going to be the big hit!

My signature as a designer is…

My aesthetic is actually quite modern and streamlined so it’s been really interesting to play that into the often heavily embellished and eclectic mix of sass & bide.

My vision for the brand…

To catapult sass & bide into new international markets whilst still retaining our uniquely Australian spirit and heart.

The sass & bide woman is…

The sass & bide woman is more about an attitude and free-willed spirit than is categorised by her age or appearance. She walks to the beat of her own drum and has an inherent confidence, which is echoed, through her clothes.

Prepping for the show

Celeb I’d love to see in one of my designs…

I’m a big fan of Jennifer Lawrence. I think her outspoken confidence and carefree attitude makes her a true sass & bide girl.

On my inspiration board…

That would be telling my secrets… Something that has served as an inspiration of all my designs for sass & bide so far is definitely the empowered modern female, something both Heidi Middleton and Sarah-Jane Clarke were true ambassadors of.

One piece of fashion advice I’ve give to women…

Don’t overthink!

The best part of the design process…

The best part of the process is definitely at the end! Seeing someone walking in your pieces in the street. I never get tired of that.

My creative process…

I’m quite collaborative so I like the noise. I also don’t think silence would be possible at the sass & bide office. It’s such an incredible family unit at Head Office – I thrive on the chaos of it all!

I’m loving sass & bide’s latest Resort ‘GREATY 180’ online campaign. The beautiful campaign is a scrapbook of rare and intimate images of Heidi Middleton with her two daughters, India and Elke Bay. Heidi has styled herself in the resort ‘13 collection at her home in Palm Beach… it’s truly divine!

Five Minutes with Renya Xydis

13th September, 2013

Editorial stylist Renya Xydis created the hair for the sass & bide FREETOWN show at Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week Spring Summer 2014. I caught up with her to find out what products she used and what trends we are seeing this season.

What was the inspiration behind the hair for the sass & bide show?

I was inspired by the collection itself. With such strong, structured and detailed looks a sleek, modern ponytail is the only option to complement the shapes. And using the barrettes was all about adding a little uptown girl polish while still maintaining the Sass & Bide signature edge.

How many looks did you create for the show?

There is only one look for this show but the simplicity lets the colour and texture of each model’s hair shine through so it looks slightly different from girl to girl.

What was the process to create this look?

We treated each model’s hair to an application of Wella Professionals Ocean Spritz at the roots, blow drying it out to give the style texture and grip. Next, hair was blow dried smooth and parted in the centre for a sharp, precise result. A good brushing to smooth followed and then the length was secured at the nape with horizontal barrettes and Wella System Professional Perfect Hold hairspray. Finally, we applied Wella System Professional Luxe Oil to hands and worked down the mid-lengths to ends for shine and stability.

What products did you use?

• Wella Professionals Ocean Spritz RRP $24.00

• Wella System Professional Perfect Hold hairspray RRP $33.50

• Wella System Professional Luxe Oil RRP $42.00

What hair trends are we seeing this season?

New York has been all about relaxed hair. Down, not up and usually with a centre part. Texture is really important. This is hair that’s not too precious.

sass & bide - wintergatecampaign - shot4 sass & bide - wintergatecampaign - shot6 sass & bide - wintergatecampaign - shot8 sass & bide - wintergatecampaign - shot9 sass & bide - wintergatecampaign - shot11London’s ‘it girl’ Suki Waterhouse (no she is not related… haha) has just been named the face for sass & bide’s SS13 digital campaign. Set in a Brooklyn brownstone, the campaign gives us a sneak peak into the world of the model, actress and artist. “Suki embodies the spirit of the brand” said Heidi Middleton, Creative Director sass & bide. Adding another dimension to the campaign, Suki has added her personal touch, illustrating and painting over exclusive behind-the- scenes shots. Middleton continued, “We wanted Suki’s creativity to shine. In the behind-the-scenes images we’ve provided an insight into who Suki is as an artist, a photographer, a model. That was interesting to us”. sassandbide.com
