Stylish school run fashion staples

27th January, 2023

Doing the school run countless times in the year has meant that I’ve managed to pinpoint the stylish yet comfy staples that will allow me to get out the door fast—but without compromising on style.

I’ve always favoured polished pieces but I know that the school run is one particular outing that requires comfort above all else. Because the girls’ schedules are so varied, I’ve found I need to be prepared to go from the school gates to myriad activities. Whether it’s sport, a play date, running an errand or simply grabbing a quick afternoon snack, I’ve found the ideal school run outfit is unfussy, simple and allows for ease of movement.

Having taken stock of the pieces I wear to do drop off and pick up all the year here’s what I’ve found is on high rotation.

Linen shorts

Investing in a great pair of dressy linen shorts is a shortcut to an easy outfit. I’ll often pair them with a tee or a singlet and slides or sneakers and it makes for a no-brainer look.

Denim shorts

A dark wash is a slightly dressier take on denim shorts. These would work well with virtually any kind of top, a button down shirt or a singlet and ticks the boxes in terms of comfort.

Printed dress

I’m all for the effortless appeal of a pretty printed dress. When you take having to decide on tops and bottoms out of the equation you’ll find yourself being able to save time so definitely have a healthy supply of them in your wardrobe.

Cropped linen pants

I’ve worn linen pants throughout summer as it’s a great alternative to jeans. They’re such an easy piece to pair with so many different things, that I definitely think it’s worth investing in a few different colours.

Black midi dress

On the flipside, a plain dress is a style chameleon. It’s a great blank canvas for creating an elevated outfit but it’s also such an easy piece to just pop on and walk out the door.

Cropped jeans

Invest in a pair of cropped jeans to form the basis of many an easy yet stylish look. I can’t live without a great pair of jeans and will often live in them throughout the week.

White sneakers

If there’s one thing that has to be in every wardrobe it has to be a pair of white sneakers. You can go for a sleek and pared back style, or incorporate a little colour for a fun touch. Either way you can’t live without them.

Black tote

Having a plain black bag at your fingertips will ensure you’re able to carry your essentials around in style. I like the size of this as it’s big enough to fit most things but not so big that it feels overwhelming.

Slides

These slides are such a great shoe to have around. The colour means it’s easy to match with different looks and styles, while the pretty knotted detail is the perfect finishing touch.

Casual cotton tote

If a black leather bag isn’t your thing, a relaxed canvas bag is another great option. This Acne bag is both cool and practical which ticks the boxes when it comes to doing the school run.

Ribbed tank

A grey tank is one of those key basics that you can mix and match with various looks. You could pair this with pants, denim, shorts or a skirt and it would work with all of them.

White t-shirt

The forever classic. You have to have a great white t-shirt, full stop. I’ve found a crew neck style is such an easy option to work with virtually everything and you’ll find you can wear it over and over again.

Logo t-shirt

For a bit of fun, I’m always quite partial to a logo tee. I think in this style, in a plain, practical hue makes it the kind of thing that will be worn multiple times. This is a designer option so it’s a bit pricier but the cost per wear will make it worthwhile.

Denim jacket

For a year-round topper, you can’t go past a denim jacket. You can pair denim for an on trend look, or use it to pop over a dress or with linen pants and tee. It’s so versatile you’ll wonder how you lived without it.

Denim skirt

Denim skirts are a fun addition to any wardrobe. It’s as versatile as a pair of jeans, but has a slightly more polished feel. Love it.

White shirt

Your wardrobe isn’t complete without a white shirt. I love this because it can easily be paired with multiple things and can be dressed up or down.

School run outfit formulas to commit to memory

23rd January, 2023

I don’t know about you but weekday mornings doing the school run are manic in our household. Trying to get the girls out the door and at the school gate on time means having to juggle multiple things and the last thing I want to deal with is a wardrobe crisis. Having encountered this a handful of times, I’ve found one of the best ways to combat it is to have a few school run outfit formulas in my head for tried and tested looks that will work all the time. This has saved me on more than one occasion as I can quickly grab something and get out the door with minimal fuss.

I’ll preface this by saying these formulas will vary for each person depending on what you generally have on during the day and your style, but for me these are a few outfits that always work. I tweak them slightly sometimes depending on my schedule or what the weather is like outside but most of the time I don’t really veer too far from the below. They’re also comfortable, incorporate pieces that are regularly in rotation and are looks that make me feel confident whenever I walk out the door.

Co-ord set + slides

Can’t get much easier than a matching set. I’ve found I’ve built up quite a collection of these because they’re such a no- brainer look. If I’m really in a rush, this is the first thing I reach for because it always looks polished. Also, you can wear both pieces separately so it earns a tick in the versatility department. I will often pair a co-ord set with slides in summer, but switch it out for sneakers when the weather starts cooling down.

Jeans + sweater + sneakers

This is one of my winter go-tos. A great pair of jeans, white sneakers and a jumper is super simple as far as outfits go but it definitely works.

Blazer + tee + jeans

I bookmark this outfit combination if I’ve got somewhere to be after drop off and need to look polished. This is just a simple jeans and tee pairing but by adding the blazer on top it dresses it up and gives it more of a professional vibe.

White shirt + jeans

A classic outfit combination like a white shirt and jeans also works for the school run. I often have a few shirts ironed and ready to go so I can quickly grab a shirt and pop it on with a pair of jeans when I’m in a rush. White is always a failsafe, but a great stripe is always fun, and bold colours are also an option when you’re feeling like brightening up your look.

Shirt dress + sneakers

Shirt dresses are one of those style staples I think everyone should have on hand as they’re so simple and effortless. I often team a shirt dress with a pair of sneakers and a crossbody bag for a look that can take me from the school run to a meeting or errands quite easily.

Midi dress + sandals

The appeal of a dress is that it’s so easy to wear which makes it one of my faves for weekday mornings. A midi dress and sandals looks polished and doesn’t require fussing around with much styling.

Tee + trouser + sandals

A tailored trouser has become a firm favourite in my weekday outfit rotation. A pair of black pants in particular is great as it can work with so many different looks. I usually pop on a tee with a trouser (I add a trench or coat during cooler weather), pop on some sandals (or a sneaker during winter) and I’m done.

Tee + jeans + sandals

Jeans and a tee is a perennial favourite because it works and doesn’t require much fussing around. I have a rotation of jeans that I know always work with various tops so I usually just pick one of those, pop on a tee and I’m ready to go. Sandals or slides are my go-to during summer, and I’ll usually just switch it out for sneakers, boots or a flat when it’s cold.

School run style staples that will make getting out the door easier

31st January, 2020

Doing the daily drop-off and pick-up, especially when you’ve got multiple kids to wrangle and a lengthy list of things to get through can mean that having to decide what to put on is the last thing on your mind. So I’ve found the best way around this (and to avoid a morning wardrobe meltdown) is to have a capsule wardrobe of pieces that will take you from the school gate to the rest of your day without missing a beat. Plus the best bit is they can be mixed and matched to create multiple fuss-free looks.

High Waist Straight Jean, Country Road

A reliable pair of jeans is a must for any wardrobe but they’re particularly handy when you’re a busy mum. This cut and colour can easily work back with multiple pieces and helps you look ‘done’ without being overly so.

Charlotte Slide, Country Road

Slides are a favourite of mine simply because they’re chic but also practical. The last thing you want is having to deal with fussy straps when you’re in a rush! These can easily work with everything from jeans, a dress or shorts making them a worthwhile investment.

Cotton Slub T-shirt, Country Road

A white tee is a wardrobe must. I’ve found that with this simple staple you can achieve an effortless casual look that’s guaranteed to work every single time.

2750 Superga white sneakers

White sneakers are a workhorse of any wardrobe simply because they go with absolutely everything. They can also be worn dressed up or down making them the ultimate school run shoe option

Twill Stripe Shift Dress, Country Road

A simple shift dress can be worn in multiple ways but the best bit about a dress is that it’s so easy to wear. Just pop it on and you’re done.

Lurex Stripe Maxi, Country Road

For a slightly more elevated look a great maxi is also a good wardrobe option. This one would work beautifully with slides or sneakers and can easily be worn away from doing the school run.

Stripe T-Shirt Dress, Country Road

Stripes are always a classic wardrobe option. This dress has a timless style that’s made for staying comfortable on busy days.

Linen Jersey Tank, Country Road

A beautiful pop of colour is one way to liven up a look. Pair this with your favourite skirt or shorts for a look that’s got personality.

Rib Tank Dress, Country Road

This rib dress can easily be paired with everything from a denim jacket to a blazer making the ultimate option for days when you’ve got multiple things in your schedule.

Textured V-neck Cami, Witchery

If you want to add a glam touch to your favourite jeans, a cami is always a stylish option.

High Neck Knit Tank, Witchery

This is a versatile tank option for wearing back with everything from linen to denim and even a fun printed piece.

Baseline Training Day Legging, P.E. Nation

What would a school run be without a great pair of leggings? Wear this with a tee and sneakers for those days when you want to feel comfortable but look great too.

Muse Backpack, Oroton

I’m a big fan of backpacks as they’re unfussy and leave my hands free when I’m on the go and have multiple things on my to-do list. If you’ve tended to steer clear of backpacks because they hark back to your days at school, then definitely try a leather version — they’re infinitely chicer and feel so much more luxe.

Heritage Shopper, Country Road

A trusty, reliable tote is a must for any school run outing. I love this for its bright, punchy shade, plus all that room allows me to carry all my essentials with ease.

T-shirt Dress, Country Dress

If you favour more subdued tones, a beautiful khaki green is always a great option for everything from dresses to tees. I love the comfy cut of this but the drawstring also makes for a flattering fit.
