Micro trend alert: aviator sunglasses

3rd October, 2022

And just like that, the aviator sunglasses are back… blame it on Miles Teller in the new Top Gun sequel! Today, these iconic sunglasses have evolved from the thin metal frames of the 80s to a thicker-set style, giving your eyewear an elevated look that makes a bold statement. There are two types of aviators I especially love to style, but it’s also important to take into account colours and patterns.

Whether it’s clothes or accessories, there is nothing I enjoy more than playing with colour. The newest aviator trend incorporates bright lenses in line with the current mood for dopamine dressing (i.e. clothes that feel good and boost your mood). Choosing a pair with an orange or red hue is a great way to experiment with styling colour into your wardrobe and is a versatile option that suits any outfit whether it be dark or neutral.

While it’s fun to play with colour, the classic tortoiseshell will never go out of style, and I particularly love a tortoiseshell frame. Not only does it complement most outfits, it also adds an element of old Hollywood glamour to any look.

It’s all about the penny loafer

19th September, 2022

When it comes to trends, one shoe that’s been doing the rounds is the penny loafer. Originating in the 1930s, the shoe got its name from the band at the front that would people would often slot a penny into in case they need to make a call from a payphone (remember those?). Fast forward to 2022 and they’re everywhere.

This loafer style is a little chunkier than your standard loafer, so it’s a great way to ground an outfit. Wear it with more delicate pieces for a good amount of contrast, or pair it with a cropped pant to let the shoe do the talking, or work it back with a feminine look and use the shoe to give it some edge. Either way, they’re comfortable and practical but definitely tick the fashion box.

Designers have all been doing their take on it with everyone from Prada to Chanel doing their own iteration. While the band at the front that could fit a penny is no longer a prerequisite, the style remains the same. From chain store designs to more high end options, there are definitely plenty of options to choose from.

Polished perfection. This look featuring a cropped black trouser and patterned blazer show you can take pared back pieces and give it some oomph with the right choice in footwear. This is one outfit that certainly lets the penny loafer shine.

Influencer Chriselle Lim shoes you can take a feminine look such as a mini and cropped boucle jacket and give it some grit with a chunky loafer. It’s an unexpected pairing but I think it manages to achieve balance quite nicely.

Love this monochromatic ensemble. One way to add a trendy element to the penny loafer is by pairing it with an ankle sock. The different silhouettes incorporated into this look worked back with the sock and loafer combination achieve a look that has elements of interest but total cohesion.

Micro trend alert: chain link jewellery

12th September, 2022

Looking to update your jewellery collection? It’s time to jump aboard the chain link micro trend. Gold chains are very much having a moment, whether in a chunky style or a delicate chain, and they’re the ultimate way to add some oomph to an outfit. I personally love to stack mine with other gold pieces in my collection, with my gold medallion often being my go-to. When you’ve got a slightly more pared back look, it’s also a nice way to make a statement without having to rework what you’re wearing.

That said, I’m also loving other chain style pieces, from bracelets to earrings. I’ve got a few gold chain link earrings which I often wear either with a super casual look like jeans and a tee or something more elevated like a suit. I favour gold as I think it often suits my wardrobe more seamlessly and works better with my skin tone. If it’s not earrings or a necklace I’m wearing, I also love to stack some of my favourite wrist accoutrements from a watch to my beloved Cartier bangle and add a bracelet on top to finish off the look.

So, if you’re looking to update your jewellery collection, then look no further because this is one trend that’s definitely worth embracing.

How to wear the elevated trouser

3rd September, 2022

There’s certainly something about the elevated trouser that’s captured fashion hearts everywhere. Perhaps its a response to the fact we’ve all been living in tracksuits and activewear over the last two years thanks to COVID, but there’s something nice about seeing a trend that just screams super stylish. And while the humble trouser may have definitely ticked the box as a classic piece, we didn’t necessarily categorise it as an edgy, on trend staple in seasons past. But this season, the latter. Thanks to fashion-ey people like Kendall Jenner and influencer Aimee Song who have been rocking the style and making it look so achingly cool, not to mention The Row who created one of the most copied looks of late, there’s only one thing that should definitely be high on any shopping list and it’s a beautiful pair of trousers. So, how can you wear it without veering into corporate territory?

Layer it

Make like Aimee and adopt a cool casual approach to this look. If you want to throw yourself wholeheartedly into this trend, then you need to pair trousers with a tank and a button down shirt thrown casually over the top. It looks effortless, and boy does it tick all the style boxes.

Avoid clunky footwear

For a truly chic touch to this look, you need to embrace the right kind of footwear. The go-to style has been a simple, minimalist sandal whether it’s a heeled thong or a simple slingback.

Add a belt

Be sure to add a thin belt to this look to really tie it all together. A belt works beautifully to add a finishing touch, but just be sure to keep it quite sleek and streamlined as opposed to bold and chunky.

Tuck it in

The elevated trouser is all about maintaining an effortless, yet polished vibe. So when you’re pairing it with a top be sure to tuck it in to avoid the look looking sloppy. Whether it’s a cami, a t-shirt or tank, this is one case where tucked in is definitely the only option.

Pop on a jacket

A great jacket, particularly a blazer will have you looking super sharp. Opt for a long length, man-style blazer worn over the top of a tank and you have yourself the kind of look that will work for myriad occasions and embraces a confidently cool vibe.

The fresh winter outfit combination that’s so easy to do

14th July, 2022

Winter brings with it so many different outfit combination options but one of my current faves is so easy, wearable and a great outfit formula to have on hand when you just can’t bear to think about what winter warmers you’re going to put on again.

Of course, I’m talking about the foolproof ensemble of a cardi and jeans. Yes, no longer is the cardigan something that is relegated for popping on when you’re pottering around the house or a quick easy throw on piece, it’s now a bonafide fashion staple. While it remains ever so effortless, its current incarnation does look ridiculously cute.

Step one in putting this outfit together is make sure you’ve got the right kind of cardi. You want something cropped or something that just sits at the waist, this gives you the option of wearing it as is, or tucking it in — both work well. After that the sky’s the limit. Go for big, bold colours, loads of embellishments or an elegant neutral, either way all options are ideal.

As far as denim goes, there’s really no way to go wrong with this one. I usually opt for a high waisted pair in a slim or straight cut. Blue, black, white… the wash is up to you. But I do have a soft spot for a crisp white denim worked back with a colourful cardi. It looks modern and fresh.

So, if you’re looking for your next winter outfit formula to add on high rotation, this is most definitely it. It’s perfect for keeping you cosy, it’s a great alternative to the ol’ jumper and jeans combination you’ve no doubt been wearing on repeat, and it looks ultra polished too. Win-win.

When is it a good idea to invest in multiple colours of an item?

12th July, 2022

When it comes to fashion advice, one thing I hear quite often is that when you find something that you love, to buy it multiple colours. After all, if something works and it looks great, why not guarantee you can wear it more often by embracing it in different hues? I’ve done it myself, and I have friends and work colleagues who are big fans of doing this simply because it ensures the wearability of one’s wardrobe.

So, is it really a good idea? Well, I for one am a big supporter. On most days I like the process of getting dressed to be somewhat on autopilot. I like to look in my wardrobe and see pieces that I know are guaranteed to work and can be worn in different ways. I’ve found that when an item a) suits me b) works back with my overall style aesthetic and c) fits seamlessly into my existing wardrobe, it’s actually smart to invest in more than one colour. Think about it—if you know it already works, isn’t it better to spend your hard earned fashion budget on an item that you know is already a no-brainer, but just refresh it in a different hue? For me, it’s a much more strategic approach and ensures a well curated closet.

The thing with this game plan is that you want to ensure that the item really works before you buy it in other colours. Often I won’t go back and purchase additional hues until I know I’ve well and truly given said item a workout—that is, I’ve been able to style it into several different outfits and have felt happy each time I’ve worn it. This way, I can ensure that I am definitely going to wear it again and again, and therefore an additional colour will not go to waste.

I tend to do this with basics in my wardrobe as opposed to statement pieces. For example as above, I bought the same top in a dark and light hue, because it’s a staple that can be re-styled multiple ways. I could also see myself doing this with a shirt or jeans or pants. This works as a wardrobe basic is chameleonic in nature, it can take on different iterations and work. I wouldn’t take the same approach with a dress for example, because I tend to like my dresses to be mini statement pieces on their own given I don’t have to pair them back with something else like I would with separates.

A multi-colour approach is definitely a smart move when you find something you love, that you know works. It opens up myriad outfit options, but also refreshes the existing outfit combinations you’ve already created with the piece in the original hue. It’s definitely one way to help ease the think work that goes into pulling together an outfit everyday, as you’ve already got something that’s guaranteed to work at your disposal.

The 2000s trend items you need in your wardrobe

6th July, 2022

In case you missed the memo, Y2K fashion is back. If you were there the first time around, you may find it amusing to know that some old faves including the handkerchief top and the Fendi baguette bag made famous by SJP in Sex and the City are well and truly having a moment. It was only a matter of time, right? The 90s made a resurgence (long live the slip dress!), so it only made sense that the aughts would have their time in the sun too. So what 2000s fashion trend items do you need?

The 2000s was certainly an interesting time for fashion. A smorgasbord of trends, it included everything from low rise jeans worn by everyone from Britney Spears to Paris Hilton to Destiny’s Child style bra and corset tops to Kate Moss and her love of vests. There was A LOT going on and that’s the beauty in it – the aughts was definitely about more is more is more.

While you don’t have to break out the butterfly clips (yet), there are a few fun pieces that will certainly update your new season wardrobe while still looking very 2022. Here are a few key staples to consider…

The baguette bag

While we’ve been embracing mini bags for awhile now, the baguette is a nod to this but done in a far more practical way. Sometimes a girl needs to be able to carry more than a lipstick, no? While still small in size, the baguette is big enough to carry most of your essentials but diminutive enough to look ultra polished. Look for a small-ish handle that you can carry on your shoulder or in the crook of your arm or by the strap.

The bucket hat

Sun smart and ticking trends! The bucket hat has been given the designer treatment with everyone from Gucci to Burberry and Celine doing their own versions. If you don’t want to splurge that much, you can still find some really cute affordable options that will keep you looking in vogue, but also keep your skin looking in tip top shape.

The strappy sandal

Think a simple minimalist sandal, most often a mule style. The beauty in this type of shoe is that it goes with virtually everything and more often than not, it’s also a sensible height making it perfect for walking around. Bookmark it for your next night out.

The handkerchief top

Jennifer Aniston wore this top to the SAG Awards and it’s what instantly pops to mind when I see this style. The other popular iteration of this style was in a bandana print which has also made its way in store and online. Wear this with a great pair of tailored pants or jeans and a strappy minimalist heel for the ultimate modern take on y2K.

The simple tank

While there were a lot of very out there options in the 2000s, the simple tank definitely got a workout too. Worn on its own or often layered under another tank, it’s definitely one way to dip your toe into the fashion of this era without going OTT.

Winter cardigans to add to your new season wardrobe

27th May, 2022

If there’s one thing that I love about winter it’s being able to throw myself into my collection of cosy knits. There’s something about layering up and popping on a sweater that I love — even more so when there’s such a great range out there right now. One of the big trends for winter is definitely the humble cardigan. Whether it features a neutral hue, a touch of embroidery or a bold splash of colour, you can definitely rely on winter cardigans to be one of the most used items in your wardrobe once the weather cools down.

One of my fave ways to style a cardi of late is to wear it as top paired with jeans. I often wear it buttoned up with a tank or tee underneath, but it’s also a great piece to wear open and over a dress or other jeans and tee combo. The key thing is to have some fun with it. The mint green Love Shack Fancy cardi I’m wearing above is ultra feminine and a little old school, and that combined with the embroidery and pastel hue make it one of the pieces I turn to when I want to dress something up or elevate some basics in my closet.

So, if you’re in the market for a new cardi (or maybe several winter cardigans), definitely keep scrolling because no doubt you’ll find something to add to your new season wardrobe!

The new matching set to have in your wardrobe this spring

17th September, 2021

Looking to invest in something new for your spring wardrobe? My latest fave is a matching set of the skirt and top variety. I wear the above Manning Cartell skirt set to death, both as a matching pair and also as separates. Versatility is key in my book and I adore co-ord sets for that reason— you can get multiple looks from just one set. While wearing a matching top and bottom is nothing new, I do love the freshness of a skirt and top combination. It feels feminine, modern and very on trend.

There are a few different styles out there right now which are just perfect for this time of year. I love the simple stretchy knit skirt and relaxed top that I’m wearing above as I like a streamlined silhouette but there’s definitely plenty of options out there. You could opt for a slightly more bohemian vibe with a floaty skirt and a peasant style blouse or go the completely opposite direction and embrace something sleek and sexy with a crop and pencil-style midi skirt. One of the best things about wearing a set like this is that you have an instantly polished look on your hands—there’s just no denying that a matching look just presents very put together and elevated. It’s easily one of my favourite wardrobe short cuts! Plus you can dress it up or down depending on your choice of accessories and shoes. A simple slingback and a statement earring is one of my tried and tested ways to accessorise this look, but you could opt for anything from sneakers to sandals or heels. The options are endless.

So, if you want to invest in something that you’ll wear to death, sidesteps wardrobe dilemmas and has plenty of versatility, I think you can’t go wrong with any of the options below.

6 ways with sunglasses

7th June, 2021

cover

One of the quickest ways to update your look is with a pair of sunglasses. I never leave the house without a pair and have built up quite the collection simply because they’re one of my favourite accessories to finish off a look. My style goes from classic to retro cat-eye to an on-trend small frame style and I love mixing it up according to the outfit I’m wearing each day.

If you’re as enamoured with good eyewear as I am then never fear because this spring/summer we’re definitely spoilt for choice as far as sunnies go. There’s a style to suit every face shape, every style and every fashion whim. Don’t be afraid to experiment with colour, shapes and over the top finishes as I think a pair of standout frames can really act as the full stop to any look. So whatever the outfit or occasion there’s definitely a pair of sunglasses that’s guaranteed to match perfectly.

streetstyle7021-web

Round sunglasses have definitely cemented their comeback. If you want frames that are on trend yet can still easily work back with myriad outfits then try this shape. It’s worth trying on a few different round styles as some face shapes tend to suit a chunkier frame whereas some require a slightly more slimline style.

embellished cat eye sunglasses

Want to make a statement? Try a pair of embellished sunglasses. This jewelled pair is a great way to make your eyewear the focal point of an outfit. It’s the ideal style for those who love to be a little more adventurous with their accessories.

mirrored sunglasses

Mirrored glasses are popping up on every ‘it’ girl to fashion blogger this season and there’s a reason why —they work no matter what your style is. They give an outfit an edgy touch, but they’re also quite versatile, you can wear them with a slightly dressier blouse or worked back with a bikini at the beach.

cat eye sunglasses poppy delevingne

Poppy Delevingne wore these classic cat eye sunglasses at Paris Fashion Week and immediately sent them at the top of many women’s shopping lists! Every girl needs a pair of classic black sunglasses but a cat eye gives it a slightly retro feel. If black isn’t for you, this shape would also work in tortoiseshell or coloured frames.

rimless-rayban

Semi-rimless glasses a la this classic pair by Ray Ban are a great alternative to Wayfarers. They’re modern, work with virtually every face shape and are the ideal style for those who want something that’s right on trend.

christine-centenera-flat-sunglasses

Who better to steal some style inspiration from than Vogue’s uber stylish fashion director Christine Centenera? These flat top sunglasses by Celine are a great way to update oversized sunnies. These frames are clean, simple and elegant and are the perfect style to take you through summer and beyond. There are plenty of brands doing this particular style so if you want a pair minus the designer price tag keep an eye out in your local chain stores are they’re guaranteed to be doing their own interpretations this season.
