5 pieces to wear to a picnic or BBQ on Australia Day

20th January, 2023

For me, Australia Day usually involves getting together with family or friends and spending time enjoying the sunshine. Whether it’s a picnic or BBQ, I’m sure I’m not alone when it comes to taking part in either or both on the day. While it’s all about the festivities and spending time with my fave people, it is a great excuse to embrace a great summer look or two.

Comfort is definitely key, particularly if I’m playing host. I don’t want to be dealing with anything fussy if I’m trying to get food served or drinks topped up. However it’s also quite a relaxed day so I want my look to reflect that — it’s all about being able to move around freely. I also find it a great time to embrace lightweight fabrics such as linen and cotton, which are perfect for the day. I love a crisp white dress such as the above for its understated simplicity, but I think a chilled out picnic or BBQ is also the perfect opportunity to break out some colour or a bold print.

If I’m heading to a picnic or BBQ, I still consider my accessories but dial it down a bit. You’ll usually find me in sandals (a chunky sandal is a great on trend option) slides or a pair of sneakers. Once again, it’s all about comfort, particularly if I’m running around after the girls. A great woven style bag is perfect for such an occasion as it’s quite summery and ideal for an outdoor event. If I’m feeling like my outfit needs a bit of elevating, I’ll usually throw on a great pair of earrings to tie everything together.

Whatever your plans are for the day, here are a few great options to help you spend your Australia Day in style.

Dresses

A dress is perfect for a picnic or BBQ. Think lightweight and relaxed as far as fabrics go but you can either go the minimalist route with a simple dress in a neutral or a style that involves splashes of colour or a playful print.

Matching sets

Co-ord sets are huge right now and Australia Day is the perfect time to embrace one. I’m a fan of a shirt and shorts combination, as well as a pyjama style long sleeved top and loose pants pairing. This is definitely one case where bold bright hues and prints are very welcome.

Chunky sandal

The chunky ‘dad’ style sandal as made famous by Chanel is truly one of the most on trend items you can wear this summer. It’s also so comfortable which makes it great for a picnic or BBQ.

Tank

It’s a simple staple but so on trend. Invest in a tank in a white or black colour and you can open up a world of different outfits. Wear yours with a great linen trouser or a crisp pair of shorts or a flowy skirt for a winning look.

Woven bag

A great basket bag is a worthwhile investment for your summer wardrobe. I love wearing them with everything from a midi dress to a matching set as it so perfectly embodies the easy, relaxed vibe of the season.
