Date with Kate

Date with Kate: Kim Kardashian

21st September, 2014
Tea session with Kim Kardashian

High tea with Kim Kardashian West.

Kim Kardashian West caused headlines when she touched down in Sydney recently to promote her Kardashian Kollection clothing line. Her trip was a family affair as she was joined by her husband Kayne – in Sydney for his Yeezus tour – and their 14-month-old daughter, North. I chatted with the 33-year-old about her collection, when she’d like more privacy, and what being a mum means to her. Also see the behind the scenes of the interview on my new show Fashion Bloggers, premiering on October 15 on The Style Network.

What are you doing while you’re in Australia?
I am in heaven right now, because I’m on tour with my husband. And launching my new [spring/summer 2014] Kardashian Kollection. It’s so much fun to be able to just be here with the family and just doing so much while we’re here.

Who or what inspires you when designing your collection?

I actually look at social media a lot for inspiration. I love looking on Instagram and seeing what people are wearing and their street style. I take a lot of screen shots. And then we put together mood boards of colours; even if I see a colour of something that I like on someone. Or I love following different fashion bloggers or looking at their pages, just to get inspiration.

Tell me about your current spring/summer collection.

This collection I love, because it’s really simple. There is a lot of texture to it. There is a lot of mesh, like fishnet and lace. So I love simple pieces that are classic with texture.

What is the designing process when creating the collection with your sisters?

First, we start off with all the inspiration photos. My sisters and I send them back and forth. We can be travelling and see a colour of something or a fabric or a girl just even driving down the street wearing a cool outfit, and I kind of slow down and take a picture and we get these groups of photos going. And then we have a big meeting and have all of our mood boards ready, and then we’ll pick colours and patterns and prints for the season. And then we’ll put them into samples and then we’ll do fittings. Every week we have these big meetings, getting it all together until the collection comes out. It’s fun.

What do you love most about being a mum?

I just think it’s the most rewarding job. It’s the best feeling. There is nothing like just going home and spending time [with North] or even bath time or bed time, every part of it is so much fun… It’s nice we can be [in Australia] all together. It’s fun that she gets to travel and see the world. I know she is too young to really appreciate it or understand it all, but we’ll have these memories and it’s so good to have her [with us].

Do you think North will follow in your or Kanye’s footsteps?

I don’t know, because she is very musical. She just loves to dance and she thinks she is singing and she just walks around with headphones all day long. But then she is obsessed with shoes and bags and she is a girly girl. My makeup, she is always playing with it!

What is the best part of your job?

The best part of my job, when I’m filming my show, is that I get to film at home. So I could be with my daughter every day. Even if she’s not on, she’s still there with me every day. So it can’t get much better than that.

What is the worst part of your job?

The worst part of our job is, when we are filming, there are a lot of people around in your room, in your home, every single day. And sometimes when you just want that little bit of privacy, it’s hard.

What do you do for fun when you’re not working?

I love to get a massage or get a facial or go eat with my friends. Really simple.

Who is your fashion icon?

I love Carine Roitfeld. I think she has the best style. She is amazing.

As a businesswoman, what has been your biggest career highlight?

I think creating my app was really fun. That was just really, really fun to do… I did an update, specifically for Australia, and it’s fun, so that everyone can kind of be in the game at the same time while I’m here, in live time.

How important is social media for your line of work?

It’s really important. I think it’s important for so many different people’s businesses. It’s such a great way to promote and to get the message out there.

Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?

In five years, I see myself probably with my family expanded and just continuing doing what I’m doing. I love designing for the line and I just hope that it continues to be successful. And expand, on the beauty empire. We have our makeup and our hair care that we’re launching. I hope that just is successful.
