How to style an oversized blazer

19th July, 2023

Who’s your oversized blazer icon? While Hailey Bieber has become the go-to inspiration for her penchant for oversized blazers, the OG would have to be Princess Diana. Images of the late Princess rocking an oversized blazer with everything from jeans to sweatshirts have become staples for how to do the look with panache. It’s further proof of how powerful a simple blazer can be. And it’s one the go-to blueprint when it comes to mastering how to style an oversized blazer.

The beauty in an oversized blazer is that it is an easy piece to throw on over everything to instantly give it a sharp, polished vibe. You can wear it over a tee and bike pants for the quintessential Mrs Bieber look, alternatively it also looks great worn with a wide leg jean or paired with shorts for a preppy take on summer dressing. The key is to embrace all that volume — it has to look boxy rather than nipped in which is what differentiates it from blazers of seasons past. Once you embrace this style, you’ll never look back, just keep these style rules in mind…

Wear something fitted underneath

When you’re playing with something that’s quite voluminous you need to pair it back with something a little more streamlined underneath to achieve an easy balance. Think a bodysuit, a tank, a tee… you’re playing up that relaxed silhouette by contrasting it with something that’s a little closer to the body.

Use it as a jacket substitute

Wherever you’d think to throw on a jacket, switch it out for a blazer instead. Going to the gym? Pop on a blazer over your activewear for an achingly cool take on athleisure. Work it back with a skirt for a polished feminine look, or you could throw it on with a pair of jeans for an on trend way to do comfy and casual dressing. Also, given its oversized fit, it layers beautifully so you can definitely give it a workout in your wardrobe this winter.

Play with proportions

Once again, remember that when you’re working with volume you need to keep proportions in mind. Think about what you’re pairing the jacket with and if you’re striking the right balance. You want to play up the oversized nature of the blazer but you also don’t want to look like you’re drowning in fabric. Remember to work a slimline silhouette in the mix along to help temper the voluminous shape of the blazer, whether it’s a tighter top or a pair of straight leg jeans. If you want to add more shape, consider tucking in your t-shirt or shirt or pushing up the sleeves to create some definition.

Consider colours

Your colour choice really depends on where you plan to wear your oversized blazer and what you’re going to pair it back with. Black is an easy option as it works back with most things, but for a fresher, more modern take look to hues like white, camel, cream, navy, khaki or beige. These colours are able to be incorporated into so many looks, adding a contemporary feel to existing pieces in your closet.
