My favourite wardrobe organisation tips

9th September, 2023

Given I’ve spent a fair bit of time at home lately I made it my mission to do thorough wardrobe spring clean. The change in seasons was the perfect opportunity to do some wardrobe oganisation and get it ready for welcoming the warmer months.  The key word being organised. I think the most important way to overcome wardrobe dilemmas is by ensuring everything is visible and has a place. It’s one of the things that ensures I can get dressed without any dramas as I know exactly what I have and where everything is.

I aim to do a spring clean every few months so I’ve managed to pinpoint the different ways I can ensure that I can easily keep everything within reach and make it even easier to pop everything back in at the end of the day. Because having clothes, shoes, bags and accessories strewn everywhere does not make for a stress-free time of getting dressed.

If you’re in the mood for a spring clean check out the wardrobe tour I did for David Jones where I shared a few of my favourite organisation tips. Watch the video below or read on for a few of the ways I keep my closet in order.

Group like by like

When I had built-in storage put in at home one of the first things I considered was that I wanted to be able to group shoes together, bags together and so forth so I knew exactly where I needed to look if I was wanting something for an outfit. I do a fair amount of shooting for my blog so it’s important that I can track pieces down easily. I’ve found that if I centralise where everything is instead of having shoes in multiple spots or jewellery in several drawers then it’s much more organised.

Have sub-categories

Within my wardrobe categories I like having sub-categories to keep things even more organised. So for example, I will group statement shoes together, neutral hued shoes together, dark shoes together and I’ve found it’s such an easy way to keep track of everything. I apply this to the rest of my closet too so I group my exercise jackets together, my going out dresses together and so forth.

Adopt a seasonal approach

The less clothes I have to deal with the better—I actually wear my closet a whole lot more when I have room to properly see and consider pieces. For this reason I change up my wardrobe when the seasons change. So I’ve put my winter clothes away and have brought out my spring/summer clothes. Just the act of being able to see just those clothes and not being distracted by other pieces I’m realistically not going to wear for awhile such as thick jumpers and coats really helps with keeping my closet more wearable and functional.

Use storage boxes

I like using storage boxes to organise smaller items like sunglasses and jewellery. One of my favourite things is a sunglasses storage case which allows me to line up all my sunnies in one case. This is perfect for when I’m doing shoots and I’ve often taken a case with me when I’m travelling.

Adopt a clothes rail system

At every photo shoot I’ve ever been on there’s always a clothes rail full of outfit options which has been put together by the stylist. I’ve always found it to be an effective way to keep track of different looks so now I have one on the go at home. I hang up single pieces I want to wear plus entire looks which means that I can see what’s ahead for the week. It’s great not to have to rummage around for clothes when I have a particular ensemble in my head as it’s right there waiting for me already.

Of course everyone has their own methods of staying organised but these are a few of my tried and tested methods. I can attest to the fact that once you get organised and stay organised, you’ll minimise wardrobe dilemmas and enjoy your clothes a whole lot more.
