The summer beauty products I can’t live without

27th December, 2021

Photography: Ashleigh Larden

I often change up my beauty routine according to the seasons, and summer is no different. Dealing with soaring temperatures means I have to rethink the products I use to ensure they are able to deal with humidity and super hot days. I love being out and about during summer, and spend a lot of time at the beach so I like products that have longevity and are able to withstand the warm days we have in Sydney. I also want things that are easy to use as I like to a keep my makeup repertoire to a minimum. These are the summer beauty products I can’t live without.

Bondi Sands Tanning Foam

Fake tan is a must for me throughout summer and I swear by this Bondi Sands tanning foam. I’ve used a few different brands and I keep coming back to this one as it’s easy to use (no one likes a patchy tan!) and achieves a great golden hue.

M.A.C Cosmetics Brow Set

Brows are key part of my makeup routine, particularly in summer when I opt for a more pared back approach. When I have to contend with heat and humidity, I’d rather just keep my makeup to a minimum where possible, so having polished brows is important. I’ve used this clear gel by M.A.C for years and it keeps any unruly hairs in place and is not too expensive too.

Stila Convertible Colour in Gerbera

A lot of makeup artists say it’s a good idea to switch to cream based cosmetics during summer as they’re less likely to “melt”. So, I use this creamy cheek and lip colour rather than a powder blush. It achieves a subtle flush which is perfect during the warmer months. It’s also good texture to work with so I’m able to blend and build up colour easily.

Maybelline Nudes of New York

This palette is one of my faves! It’s inexpensive and the selection of colours is perfect for achieving a smoky eye effect. I often use this palette to create a deeper, more dramatic effect when I’m going out, but there are also some shades which are great for day.

Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Bronzer

I’m a huge fan of Charlotte Tilbury’s range and this bronzer is a must during summer. I use it to add some subtle colour to my cheeks or use a dusting of it on my face. It has a pore blurring effect and it leaves my skin looking like it’s been airbrushed. Winning!

Beauty pick of the week: Charlotte Tilbury contour wand

5th July, 2018

Contouring can seem like a daunting prospect at times but this Charlotte Tilbury wonder product makes it so much easier.

Charlotte Tilbury Contour Wand, $60

Whilst I don’t do Kim Kardashian scale contouring because hey, she has professionals helping her achieve that, I do like to do it myself from time to time. If I’ve got a work event or occasion to go to then I like to amp up my makeup a bit more for a stronger, more impactful look.

The best thing about this wand is that it’s really easy to apply and blend, and if you don’t get both of those things right it can make contouring go very awry… Luckily though, the cushion applicator dispenses just the right amount of product and makes it easier to target specific spots on my face.

I team this product with the Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Beauty Light Wand and the overall effect is a more sculpted finish, with that lit-from-within glow.

If you’ve been wanting to try contouring yourself but were afraid to because it seemed to complicated then this is a great place to start. It’s seriously super easy to use and I consistently get a great result every time.

My beauty pick of the week: Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Beauty Light Wand

21st June, 2018

Like its name says this gorgeous highlighting wand achieves the ultimate, I-could-walk-down-the-red-carpet-right-now glow.

Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Beauty Light Wand, $60

I’ve sat in more makeup chairs than I can remember and the one thing I love about it is every time I walk away I have the most amazing glow. If I could permanently have someone doing my makeup everyday I’d totally be on board with it but alas it’s me doing it most days so I need products that are quick and easy to use. So, how to achieve a glowy skin effect without a million and one products? Well, I have become a huge fan of the Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Beauty Light Wand for that very reason.

I like using highlighters to accentuate my features however I’ve never been able to find one that’s just the right consistency. This liquid highlighter is great as it’s easy to apply and blend (it comes with a sponge applicator at the tip) and is really easy to work into the skin. I don’t end up looking streaky or too overdone and achieves just the right kind of luminosity.

If you’ve been on the hunt for a highlighter that delivers just the right level of sparkle without looking like you had a run in with a glitter pen then definitely give this wand a go. I am amassing quite the collection of Charlotte Tilbury products because they’re so easy to use and the finish is always spot on and this product is no different.

My beauty pick of the week: Charlotte Tilbury ‘The Dolce Vita’ eyeshadow palette

24th May, 2018

Charlotte Tilbury can really do no wrong. This eyeshadow palette provides a flush of colour for the eyes that’s punchy, yet natural and I’m officially obsessed.

Charlotte Tilbury ‘The Dolce Vita’ eyeshadow quad, $80

Eyeshadow palettes can sometimes be a tricky thing as you’re not always guaranteed to love all the colours. I’ve had instances where I’ve played favourites with the colours only to have one that goes unused. However I’m pleased to report that there’s no such issue with this little beauty.

As with most of the Charlotte Tilbury range the colours, the finish and the wearability of this palette is spot on. The copper, bronze and champagne shades all work together to create a beautiful warm, sun-kissed effect whilst still looking natural. I hate looking too overdone and I’ve found all the hues in this quad work harmoniously together to create the perfect finish.

Whilst providing the ideal flush of colour on my eyes, I’ve found that the colour in this eyeshadow quad has staying power. I can wear this all day and it still has the same intensity as when I first walked out the door. It’s perfect for those times when I just want to look a little more polished as I’m going to an event or an important meeting during the day, with it looking too over the top. I highly recommend this for those wanting a product that’s easy to apply but delivers a flattering finish with staying power.

If you can never find the right lipstick shade this is one way to guarantee the perfect colour. This is reacts to the natural chemistry of your lips giving you a custom hue that’s uniquely suited to you.

Charlotte Tilbury Golden Goddess Eye Palette

It’s hard to find a quad palette that has just the right shades (there’s often always a random colour that you’re not quite sure what to do with) but these are all gorgeous and quite wearable.

Kitsch Luxe Shower Cap

Oh the cuteness! Shower caps are often a necessity rather than an accessory but this solves that problem. If you’re not a fan of polka dots this range also comes in stripes and plain black.

Tom Ford Bronzing Powder

For a flush of “I just came back from an exotic tropical holiday” colour Tom Ford is your man. This bronzing powder not only gives great colour, the packaging is unbelievably chic. You’ll be looking for excuses to pull this one out for touch ups.
