Easy ways to rethink the humble tracksuit and turn it into a stylish loungewear staple

24th July, 2021

The tracksuit is no doubt a ubiquitous part of many people’s relaxation wardrobe and over the last few weeks I’m sure it has become even more of an integral staple. While classic trackies will always have a place in our off duty repertoire, in recent years, the humble tracksuit as we know it has had a bit of a glow up. In fact, dare I say, it’s now right up there as a critical part of many a loungewear look. So, if you want to to easily go from your couch to the local cafe to pick up a coffee, here are a few ways to do the tracksuit, with an injection of style.

Be selective with materials

Think luxe materials such as wool, cashmere or corduroy. While there are some cute iterations of cotton tracksuits, there’s something about elevated fabrics which can turn the tracksuit into more of a style piece.

Work it back with a knit

A gorgeous knit is always a constant in my winter wardrobe and it’s become a critical part of my loungewear wardrobe because it’s actually a great piece to pair with a pair of tracksuit pants. Worn back with a tracksuit, it makes it adds a chic element.

Accessorise, accessorise, accessorise

You don’t have to go all out in the accessories department if you don’t want to but the addition of a simple necklace or a great pair of earrings is one way to turn a tracksuit from just something you wear on the couch to something that has a little more of a fashion element.

Consider your footwear

Pair your tracksuit with a great – but comfy – pair of shoes. Think a nice comfortable sandal or a pair of sneakers. It allows you to tick the form and function box quite nicely.

Go for a great bag

When leaving the house, you can turn your tracksuit into a going out look with the addition of a nice bag. A statement tote, a bucket bag, or even a pretty basket bag are the kind of dressy accessory that works well with a tracksuit.

Consider your outerwear

One trend that’s emerged featuring the tracksuit, is pairing it with classic outerwear. Think a beautiful trench or a coat in a classic shade such as camel, black or navy. It doesn’t seem like it should work but it definitely does—plus you can stay unbelievably toasty and warm all at the same time.

How to wear a tracksuit in a chic way

5th May, 2021

Tracksuits were once the kind of thing that were strictly designated for wearing at home while relaxing on the couch. But that’s all changed. Recently it’s had a bit of a glow up and is a bonafide wardrobe must-have. For the sceptics among you, I totally get it— a tracksuit?! However banish the thought of the daggy, baggy trackies of old—the new incarnation is infinitely cooler, and way more stylish. This season, it’s about re-learning how to wear a tracksuit.

The key with wearing a tracksuit these days is how you style it—from what you pair it with to the kind of cut and fabric you choose. Either way, the best part is that’s it’s so incredibly comfortable to wear all day, so you can bookmark it for your WFH wardrobe quite easily. So, while anyone can rock a tracksuit, there are some important guidelines to remember so you’re on the right path to doing this trend right.

Match it

Matchy matchy is always a wining combo. Wear a top and bottom that are same colour ways and also go for the same material. For example the cord option I’m wearing above is a way to do a matching combination in a way that’s polished.

Consider your footwear

Think about the kind of shoes you pair with a tracksuit. Your outfit still needs to look put together if you want to achieve a look that’s on point. Although it’s a casual option don’t just throw on a pair of thongs—style it with chunky sandals or a nice pair of sneakers.

Go for the tuck

A jumper and tracksuit pant combination can sometimes look a little shapeless so you want to give it some shape elsewhere. I’ve found tucking it slightly in the front can be a great way to do this.

Choose great outerwear

If you want your look to tick all the style boxes make sure to go for a stylish jacket option. Adding a trench or an oversized denim jacket can make a tracksuit look more sophisticated/trendy and bring the entire outfit together.

What do you think—are you going to be doing the tracksuit glow up this season?

What I Wore: On Track

10th July, 2018

The word tracksuit doesn’t immediately conjure up images of a chic ensemble suitable for your next event but it’s time to turn that notion on its head. Enter this gorgeous forest green set by Camilla & Marc. The pants and jacket both have a distinctly athletic vibe however both have a refined aesthetic that make them look appropriate for a slightly dressier occasion.

The key to dressing up something that’s quite sporty looking and making it work for a function is your accessories. In this instance, this tracksuit definitely called for a statement heel to elevate it. I have rediscovered these Aquazzura heels recently and couldn’t resist pairing them with this outfit. The snakeskin adds an edgy touch whilst the straps give them a strong focal point and provide the ideal contrast to the simplicity of the jacket and pants. A simple pair of classic sunglasses seemed the perfect choice so as not to overwhelm the look whilst I kept my jewellery to a minimum, sticking to a lone gold bangle to add an elegant finishing touch.

I love being able to push the boundaries as far as my outfits go and in this instance, taking something that seems at first to be quite casual and turning it into an unexpected go-to for dinner or a work party. I think fashion is always about experimentation, playing with trends and learning to put your own spin on outfits—even when it comes to the humble tracksuit!
