The best things to pair with a statement skirt

21st November, 2018

I’ve spoken of how much of a fan I am of a statement skirt whether it be for casual wear or something a little more special. Whilst this skirt style holds its own simply because it will usually feature striking colour or print, the key to letting it truly stand out is what you pair it with. And there’s such a plethora of choices you really will have no trouble making it your new go-to (especially when it comes to party season). So here are some amazing options for the next time you want an outfit that truly delivers.

 The statement top

Even if you’re wearing a skirt that’s already a focal piece on its own it doesn’t meant that you can’t also take it up a notch with your top. If your skirt is in a vibrant shade, has extra embellishments or lots of texture just be sure to keep your top a neutral colour but feel free to go for a design with elevated details such as a dramatic sleeve or ruffles such as the one I’m wearing below.

A logo tee or sweater

A tee or sweater emblazoned with a logo is still very much a thing and it’s a dream to pair with a bold skirt. To keep your look cohesive try and incorporate a similar colour palette in your top as what you have on your skirt.

A tonal top

There’s something quite chic about incorporating similar tones throughout an outfit. I wore the below pink top with a midi skirt in a similar shade and loved that it worked to elongate my shape and also had visual impact. It’s an easy styling trick to try when you want a look that looks polished and pulled together.

A white tee

God bless the humble white tee for it really does work with pretty much everything. It’s also a great pairing with a printed skirt, allowing the skirt to take centre stage. This pairing has become a shortcut of mine on days when I want an outfit that looks like I tried but I really managed to get out the door in record time!

A touch of lace

A glam top, one that incorporates luxe finishes such as lace is great with a skirt that features rich shades or a romantic print such as flowers. It also incorporates a little bit of extra texture to create a look that’s got flair.

A bold accessory

Whilst not in the clothing category a great accessory really makes for the ideal finishing detail when it comes to an outfit featuring a statement skirt. A great belt and a structured bag fall into this category and are easily paired with many a skirt, regardless of its print, colour or texture.

The quick styling trick that will update your favourite dress

24th October, 2018

I’m all about a quick styling trick. If there’s something that I can do to my outfit that takes minutes but will do plenty to change its look and feel then I’m all over it. This is why this recent trend towards belting dresses is absolute genius in my mind. It’s something that you can do using an accessory that you more than likely already have in your closet and it will change the whole vibe of a dress. By simply cinching in the waist of an existing dress you completely change the shape, and also give it a strong focal point based on the belt that you choose.

The thing with this styling trick is that most styles of belt will work. You could opt for a classic black belt with statement buckle to give your dress a little edge. A simple skinny belt will add a sophisticated touch to any frock whilst a chunky style waist belt will act as its own bold finishing piece. And it’s so easy. Just pop on the belt and you’re done.

If you have a closet full of dresses that are currently putting you to sleep because you’ve worn them so much then consider adding a belt the next time you wear it. It’s an easy outfit refresh that won’t break the bank and that’s a definite win-win situation.

Pack a punch

You could opt for a belt with a statement buckle (the classic GG belt like the one above is a fave) to give your favourite dress an added lift.

Have fun with punchy prints

31st August, 2018

Classics have a definite place in any wardrobe but I think there’s always room to have a little fun. Enter vibrant prints. Usually incorporating loads of colour and punchy patterns that are guaranteed to lift any outfit consider these your go-to when you want to bring a little sunshine into your look.

You can approach this trend in two ways: choose one statement piece and team it with pared back pieces or go for a clashing effect and team a few different colours and prints. If you’re opting for the latter you’ll need to choose an element to tie everything together whether it be the same colour or similar prints. Often accessories are a helpful way to bring cohesion to your look and give it a more finished effect.

There’s only one way to carry this look and it’s to wholeheartedly embrace it because if you’re going to wear something that’s eye-catching, you need to own it. So whether you go for a beautiful printed dress or a statement coat, a pair of showstoppper shoes or a striking bag it’s important to not shy away.

8 things to wear on your next date night

10th February, 2018

I think date nights are great. For me, I think they’re the perfect excuse to get dressed up and spend some quality one-on-one time together with Luke, much like we did back when we first started dating. And whilst the date itself is always special, often it’s the process of being able to plan an outfit and get all dolled up that’s half the fun.

Date night outfits are the ideal time to embrace pieces that dial up the glamour and make you feel amazing. Whether it be some knockout statement jewellery or a stunning pair of stilettos, it’s all about gravitating towards clothing and accessories that are a departure from your everyday look and have that magical sartorial power that make you feel like your very best self. Now you’ve got your outfit, your date and the location it’s up to you to BYO romance!

Scroll down to for 8 pieces that you can wear on your next date night…

Raey satin silk slip dress

Simple and understatedly sexy, a slinky slip dress is a great outfit option.

A cute 70s style mesh clutch brings a playful touch to any look. I love having a statement bag as an outfit accent when I’m wearing something that’s a little more subdued.

If you’re not a dress girls a great skirt can be a wonderful alternative. This skirt paired with a blouse or slip would be beyond perfect for a nice dinner.

M.I.H Jeans Anneke balloon sleeve top

If you’re not so much of an accessories fan, your clothes can definitely take on the mantle of showstopper piece. The balloon sleeves on this top and the sweet candy pink make it the perfect thing to bookmark for an evening out.

Alexandre Birman Jessica bow-embellished sandals

Killer shoes are a must. I love the bow detail on these shoes and the rich wine colour give it a luxe feel. There’s just something about the magical effect of a pair of skyscraper heels.

Theory Whitney bag

If you don’t like having to carry a clutch, a little shoulder bag can be a nice alternative. Black is always a practical option as it will go with virtually everything.

For those nights when the weather is a bit cooler, you’ll want a jacket to pop on and this blazer ticks all the right boxes. The cut is flattering, the colour versatile and the satin lapel really gives it a nighttime feel.

Easy ways to update your summer wardrobe

27th December, 2017

If you’re feeling less than inspired with your current summer wardrobe it’s time to employ a few styling tricks to inject a bit of life into your new season looks. You don’t have to rush out and buy entirely new looks either—you can rework existing pieces you currently own and make them feel current with the addition of a few on trend items. Here are a few ways to hit refresh…

Standout accessories

This is the easiest shortcut to a new look by far. A pair of statement earrings, a gold medallion or a pair of bold sunglasses are all simple ways to elevate a look, using what you already own.

Lightweight linen

If there’s one look that’s currently ramping up in popularity it’s anything in lightweight linen. Matching separates, a slip dress or wrap skirts all look great in this perfect for summer fabrication as it’s guaranteed to stay cool on sweltering hot days.

Natural textures

Bags in natural textures scream resort wear and are the ideal accessory for the next few months. And there are so many fun incarnations. From a straw bag with fun pom pom details or a structured raffia clutch, going au naturel is just the thing to bring your summer look into the now.

White on white

A crisp white on white is the ideal look for the season. A winning combination is a white skirt and tee for an off duty ensemble that feels fresh and new.

Add a scarf

The vintage print scarf is the versatile piece your summer wardrobe definitely needs. Tie it around your hair or wear it as a headband, pop it around your neck old-school movie star style or even just tie it to your bag to add some pep to it. Either way you’re set with one super easy addition to your wardrobe.

Pop on a graphic tee

The graphic tee is one of the enduring trends of 2017 and it looks like it’s not going anywhere anytime soon. Whether it’s a cute phrase, a designer logo or quirky print, there’s no better time to go loud and proud on a t-shirt. This piece works perfectly with denim and definitely tucked in for the most on-trend way to style it.

The one bag you should definitely have in your wardrobe

19th November, 2017

I was lucky enough to receive the above Proenza Schouler clutch as a gift and it has without a doubt become a workhorse in my wardrobe because it ticks all the right boxes: it’s simple, it’s understated and as it’s black it goes with virtually any day or night look. I think a clutch is the kind of thing every woman should have at least one of in her wardrobe. You can of course invest in a statement clutch or one in a more ornate style that’s perfect for a formal event however a great place to start is a bag that can accompany you when you’re heading out for a nice dinner or out with the girls. I think the key is to find one that can fit your essentials and is a bit of a style chameleon in that it can work with a variety of different colours, a range of different looks and is appropriate for most occasions.

My fave places for a cheap fashion fix

13th February, 2017

When it comes to fashion I’m all about a high-low mix. I love being able to mix designer pieces with more inexpensive finds to achieve my own signature look. I’m a big believer that you don’t have to spend a fortune to get some stylish additions to your wardrobe. Case in point: these are some of my fave places for a cheap fashion fix.

ASOS

This is one of my favourite online destinations. I turned to ASOS during both my pregnancies to stock up on all my maternity wear as they were on trend but didn’t cost a fortune. The range is also so extensive that it’s impossible not to find what you’re looking for, personally I’ve bought everything from leather pants to jeans from the site. Plus if I’m after a trend driven piece but don’t want to spend too much I know I’m bound to find something that fits the bill at ASOS.

Witchery

As far as Aussie brands go, Witchery has to be up there for doing clothing that is quite contemporary but with an elegant simplicity. They do pieces that are ideal for the office so they’re great if I’m after workwear and I particularly love their range of shoes.

Seed

Seed is one of my favourite spots for finding classic pieces that look expensive but don’t cost a fortune. Their designs are always up to the minute without looking overly trendy so I can get away with wearing something from Seed that looks a little more non descript and can work back quite easily with the rest of my wardrobe. Their kids’ clothes are also particularly cute!

Topshop

I love shopping at Topshop whenever I’m in London so it’s great that they’ve now opened stores in Australia and deliver locally from their website so I can get a hit anytime I want. The range is ideal if you’re looking for on trend pieces that are inspired by looks straight from the runway.
