The accessory you need right now? A baseball cap

13th July, 2023

Much has been written and said about the baseball caps Kendall Roy wore in Succession. The very definition of quiet luxury, the cashmere Loro Piana baseball caps Kendall wore were relatively non-descript but at almost $1000 a pop, they were definitely the kind of subtle accessory flex a billionaire would favour. A definite case of if you know, you know. And while you don’t have to head down the route of a bougie cashmere baseball cap, this season, you definitely need a baseball cap in your life.

While not exactly new, the baseball cap has traditionally been kept to certain athletic pursuits. A simple way to keep sweaty locks out of your face during a run or a way to protect yourself from the sun during a hike. Not anymore! The baseball cap has crossed over into the fashion mainstream and become a bonafide must-have accessory. You’ll see many an influencer sporting a cap (a Yankees cap more often than not) as you can see below, and it’s a perfectly nonchalant way to add a cool edge  to an outfit. Much like ‘the wrong shoe theory’, adding a baseball cap to an otherwise polished look feels unexpected and therefore can instantly take an outfit in a different, fashion forward direction. Whether it’s a crisp button down and slacks topped with a classic navy cap, or a bright green hat paired with a neutral look to give it a sporty touch, there’s something to be said for a baseball cap as a go-to accessory.

While a cap doesn’t have to be a luxury accessory (a NY cap will set you back just $40), if you do want to add a designer touch to an outfit via your headwear there are definitely plenty of designers doing their take on the humble cap. From Gucci, to Celine, Saint Laurent and The Row, you can add a luxe edge to a casual look and instantly elevate it. However don’t feel restricted to designer headgear. You’re definitely spoilt for choice with everything from sporting teams, to local brands, and even just a plain non-descript single hued cap all viable options to add a trendy touch to an existing outfit. The bonus? You’ll tick the sun protection box too, which in Australia, is always a very good thing.
