I’d be willing to bet that most millennials, at some stage, had a favourite going out top. What’s the going out top you might ask? It was the fancy top that you’d most likely wear with a pair of jeans when you were heading out and it was absolutely a wardrobe must-have for ever so long. It was a red carpet staple too with the hottest ‘it’ celebs such as Christina Aguilera, Paris Hilton, Jennifer Aniston all rocking it at everything from awards shows to movie premieres.
The beauty in the going out top is that it can be whatever you want it to be according to your look. Popular styles ranged from a sleek minimalist cami, to a backless halter top to a cowl neck faux chainmail top or the ever popular handkerchief top, but it was more than likely paired with denim, because well, that’s just what we wore it with back then! The new incarnation of the going out top still has all the fun happening up top — you can embrace embellishments, a sexy crop style, a simple strapless number or an off the shoulder style (I’m a big fan of these) but the aim of the game is to make it the focal point of your look. Consider it the statement piece of your outfit.
While I wouldn’t suggest pulling out the top you wore clubbing back in the day (unless you think it holds up, then by all means!) definitely embrace the spirit of it. Remember as the showpiece element of your look you can afford to go as glam as you want, with everything else designed to hum along nicely in the background so your going out top can take centre stage. Heels are also most definitely a must, and a nice pair of jeans (ideally not the skinny kind cause it was all about bootleg jeans back then).
