What I Wore: Ladies’ Luncheon 2019

21st November, 2019

There are a number of charities I’ve been involved with but the annual Ladies’ Luncheon fundraiser for The Royal Hospital for Women Foundation, organised by my friend Deborah Symond ONeil is one event that I like to get behind and look forward to attending. This year, the event raised $340,000 — much needed funds for a worthy cause that assists premature babies to survive and thrive.

A special occasion called for a special dress and I found the perfect candidate in this Camilla & Marc dress. The off-the-shoulder style is so perfect for a spring event, whilst the blouson sleeves are right on trend. The metallic colour also gave it a thoroughly modern feel, whilst the front split adds an edgy touch.

Working with metallic shades calls for simplicity which is why I opted for plain black Stuart Weitzman heels which are quite minimalist. A metallic pink Bulgari clutch added a pop of colour whilst beautiful Chaumet jewellery were the ideal finishing accoutrements.

What I Wore: Witchery Summer ’19 launch

12th November, 2019

Today I was lucky enough to be invited to host the launch of Witchery’s Summer’ 19 collection. The event took place on Seadeck, a gorgeous super yacht, the ideal venue to showcase the brand’s latest collection—and take in Sydney’s beautiful harbour.

I wore a look from Witchery for the event, choosing a vibrant orange midi dress. With a simple, classic silhouette, the dress was really all about the colour. I think when wearing such a vivid statement hue it’s important to keep it simple and allow it to be the focal point. One of the really beautiful shades to wear with orange is definitely tan—it’s understated enough to work with the colour but not so much that it fades into the background. Tan shoes with a block heel are the kind of footwear option that will be able to work back with many looks so it’s definitely a worthwhile addition to any wardrobe, particularly during summer where it will work beautifully with everything from dresses and skirts to shorts. Plus anything with a block heels is really comfortable so it’s the perfect go-to during party season.

What it’s really like to work with a stylist

7th November, 2019
Working with a stylist during spring racing has allowed to experiment with new looks

I have always styled my racing looks and really enjoy doing it but it’s also labour intensive. I have to source multiple options for every race day, and that includes my outfit, shoes, jewellery, and headwear. This year, I not only had several race days to attend but I had presenting commitments with 7 Racing that saw me having to also style outfits for those occasions, and not only that I had to ensure that my outfit was able to work on camera and co-ordinated with the other presenters. That’s a lot of outfits! So I enlisted the help of stylist Jess Pecoraro to make it happen.

Jess is the go-to fashion and celeb stylist for the likes of Jesinta Franklin and Gemma Ward and Delta Goodrem. She’s got a great eye and knows what I like and gets my style which is critical when you’re working with a stylist. We’ll often start by taking a look at the events I have coming up and what each look requires. For example there are strict dress codes for big race days like Derby Day and Melbourne Cup which we need to adhere to, and if I’ve got TV commitments I need to ensure that what I’m wearing works well on screen as well as the other presenters I’m working with. Additionally I work with a few key brands during spring racing so it’s important that we factor them into the styling process. It’s a big process and there are so many considerations to be made that it’s great to have someone to look after it all as it makes everything a little less hectic.

I’m quite open to trying new looks and Jess pulled together a number of different outfits for me to try. We did a few fittings at home to see what would work and the accessories to match. This can become quite a lengthy process as we experiment with different options to lock in the final outfit, all the while making sure that I’m keeping to dress codes and incorporating certain brands. I’m always able to direct the outfits where I want them to go but Jess is able to put forward combinations and suggestions of how everything could work together which is great as often it can be hard to have a vision for every outfit. That’s the great thing about working with a stylist.

I often get asked why I work with stylists and one of the reasons is that it’s great to be able to collaborate with someone else and get a fresh opinion or point of view on fashion. I know what I like but sometimes I might miss something that would look great, that someone else from the outside looking in might see. And being able to push boundaries and try something new is what fashion is all about.

What I Wore: David Jones The Bright Night event

21st September, 2019

Nothing signals the beginning of spring/summer than a healthy dose of light, breezy looks and plenty of vibrant hues. I recently attended David Jones’ The Bright Night event at their newly refurbished flagship store in Sydney and the dress code was all about wearing colour.

Eventually I decided on a baby pink one shoulder top and skirt set by Ginger and Smart. I loved the hint of decolletage that the cut of the top gave, which I’ve always found to be really flattering. The three quarter balloon sleeves also added a on trend touch whilst the matching midi skirt gave a really polished vibe.

As I was wearing a single colour I wanted to add some punchy accessories to lift the look. So I decided on a pair of old favourites from my shoe collection, a leopard print pair of Tabitha Simmons pointed heels with multiple straps. I then finished off the look with a black Dior bag worn as a clutch (seriously one of the best investment bags I’ve bought as it’s so versatile). Now bring on spring/summer…

What I Wore: Sport Australia Hall of Fame Awards

13th October, 2018

Earlier this week I flew down to Melbourne with my family to watch my mum be inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame. Attending the 34th Sport Australia Hall of Fame Annual Induction and Awards Gala Dinner was a truly special occasion for us all, most especially for Mum. For such an event I wanted to wear something a little bit different, something with a strong silhouette, and the moment I saw this look by Maticevski I couldn’t see myself wearing anything else.

I usually tend to go for dresses for big events so it was great to be able to venture out of my comfort zone. This top is a showstopper—the one shoulder neckline, the subtle architectural ruffle and the incredible train all made it perfect for the occasion. The soft blush colour also worked beautifully with the white tailored pants and had a really strong, yet feminine vibe to it.

My outfit’s colour palette was quite soft, so I knew I needed to keep the theme going throughout the rest of the look, as anything too bold would have been a little bit jarring. This gorgeous clutch by Farrah and Sloane had just the right aesthetic. I loved the fringing and also the bangle handle, and the style held its own against my outfit without taking anything away from it. A pair of classic neutral Christian Louboutin pumps was the ideal shoe and worked well with the rest of the colours of my ensemble.

It’s always so fun to be able to get dressed up for events and wear gorgeous things, but this look will remain particularly special to me because of the occasion I wore it to. What an honour it was to watch my mum’s hard work and achievements celebrated on such a grand scale, I can’t think of a person more deserving of it.

How to elevate an LBD

23rd August, 2018

Having a little black dress (LBD) in your fashion arsenal is a must. It’s a reliable go-to for events and special occasions and guarantees you will look always look polished whenever you wear one. I’ve got a few favourites in my closet that I often pull out when I’ve got a big function and I just don’t have the time to really think about what I’m going to wear. While an LBD is a failsafe fashion option it can also sometimes feel a little too understated and you might feel the need to dress it up a bit more. Luckily it’s really easy to do. Over the years I’ve managed to transform any LBD using the following tricks…

Add a statement heel

This always works a treat because a shoe that’s got some wow factor pairs well with a dress that’s quite simple. I did this with the above look and felt that it elevated the dress and gave it a little more depth.

Dial up your accessories choices

Accessories are your friend. It’s also the perfect time to choose slightly more bold pieces. Pop on a pair of oversized earrings, a gorgeous cocktail ring or a striking necklace to take your LDB up a notch.

Glam up your hair

The way you wear your hair really can change everything. I’ll often opt for an up-do whenever I’m wearing a little black dress as I find it has a slightly more glamorous feel. A bouncy ponytail or a sleek or messy bun is my go-t0.

Add a bright lip

It goes without saying that makeup can really make a look impactful. I’m usually an eye or lip girl but never at the same time as I find it can become a little too overwhelming. When it comes to either with an LBD, I’ll usually try a bold lip if I’m trying to glam up a plain black dress.

Throw on a striking jacket

This works off the same principle as the statement shoe, in that given you have a blank canvas to play with you can afford to go a little more daring with what you pair with a black dress. I’ve found a standout jacket (sequins, colour, patterned – go crazy!) is an effective way to add an element of interest to an LBD.

What are some of your favourites ways to elevate an LBD?
