Cute gym clothes that will make you want to work out

20th January, 2018

If one of your New Year’s resolutions involved doing more exercise, you’re in luck because there’s never been a better time to shop for gym clothes. The extensive range of prints, colours and styles available right now means there’s definitely something to suit all tastes and budgets. And let’s face it, sometimes there’s just no better motivator than the excuse to wear a cute outfit.

I’m all about a simple colour palette and often favour black, white and navy and I’ve extended this to my workout looks as it often makes it easier to mix and match different pieces. I’ll sometimes add a few subtle prints in the mix just to keep things fun and inject a bit of energy into my fitness wardrobe. Having made a resolution to incorporate more training into my schedule, I’ve been scouting around for the perfect pieces to exercise in, and these in particular have caught my eye…

PS by Paul Smith Basso trainer

Plain white sneakers are really versatile but who can resist a little graphic detail to elevate this style staple.

Chanel Vintage Sports Line duffle gym bag

I’ll preface this by saying this piece would be a complete and utter splurge but you’ve got to hand it to Chanel for turning a gym bag into a stylish carryall.

Nike Air Max Jewell sneakers

I love the blush shade of these sneakers and think they add a feminine touch to my gym kit.

The Upside Midnight Chop Short

Given the sweltering temperatures we’re experiencing at the moment, a pair of gym shorts are a must. The subtle coloured piping add a fashionable flair.

The Upside DJ Crew

I like the fact workout clothes nowadays could quite easily work with my regular wardrobe. With its kimono sleeves and logo feature, this top is right on trend.

Running Bare Ab Waisted Fight Club Full Length Tight

High waisted tights are great for providing support whilst working out but this pair is just that little bit extra due to the galactic print.

Fendi logo print performance t-shirt

Classic black with an understated logo this Fendi top takes workout tees to a new level. Made from mid weight stretch fabric and mesh panels, it’s the perfect marriage of form and function.

No Ka’Oi Ola performance bra

Major ticks for the striped elasticated detail on this sports bra. It lifts an all black piece and gives it a point of interest.

Puma Boyfriend tank

A white tank is always on high rotation for me and this one is the perfect shape and length.

What are some of your favourite athleisure brands?

Anna Heinrich and I catch up at Wild Basket in Neutral Bay

Anna Heinrich found fame when she stole the heart of Tim Robards in the first season of TV’s The Bachelor Australia in 2013. Fast forward three years and the couple are still going strong and have since become one of Australia’s most recognised couples. When Heinrich, 29, isn’t attending A-list events she works part-time as a criminal lawyer and is the blogger behind Love Always Anna. She talked to me about how The Bachelor has changed her life, the pressures on her relationship and how she copes with media attention.

What is a day in your life?

It really depends on the day… I’m still working as a [criminal] lawyer. I’m in there every week, and my boss has been so good to me for the past three or four years. I like keeping my foot in that door. I’ve [also] been working with Nike for about almost eight months now. When I first started, I did their Training Club Tour, a big all-women event … I’m also working with Pandora and Oral B and I’m busy working on my blog.

You were the first girl to win The Bachelor Australia. How has that impacted your life?

I don’t think I ever knew how it would change my life… [Tim] is my first boyfriend and it has almost been three years…I’m also doing a lot of media-related things that I never thought I would ever do.

What do you love most about Tim?

I actually love everything about him. I know it sounds so cliche, but I love his determination He is very open with everything … He is very good looking, too!

Should we expect a marriage proposal anytime soon?

I’m definitely not engaged at the moment [laughs] but I think it will come. There has been that pressure ever since we got together.

Does being in the media spotlight put pressure on your relationship?

It does, but I’m not going to let it affect our relationship. We know it’s always going to be there, but I think what’s really good about us is we haven’t just gotten married for everybody else. We’re doing it in our own time and when it happens, it’s as real as anyone else’s marriage.

Is there pressure to get married?

We know it’s all there and we know everyone is constantly watching and waiting, but I think that’s what I love about him so much, that he hasn’t sort of succumbed to the whole pressure. For us, it’s about getting to know each other and that’s exactly what we’re doing, we love each other’s company and it’s not so much about, “Let’s get married straight away to please other people”.

Is it strange to have the public know your intimate details of your love life?

I don’t tell everybody everything, but we do feel somewhat of responsibility to share as much as we can with people because they’ve grown with us from the beginning.

After the show and when you officially began dating, there was speculation of the authenticity of your relationship. Have those rumours been put to rest now?

Yes, there are rumours about us probably every couple of weeks – either that we’ve broken up or there is some problem. But whenever it is, it’s always other people; I think they just find that an interesting story.

The Bachelor is currently airing its fourth season. Who do you think will win?

It’s too hard to call at this stage as there are so many amazing women still left in the house. I’ll leave this one up to Richie [Strahan]!

What would be your advice to someone going into the show?

Be prepared, and I think knowing that it’s not always what you expect. It’s very different from what people see on TV … You do an hour or two-hour interview and they may not even use that interview, or if they do, it’s basically one line. So be prepared, and go in it for the right reasons. I think being the first [season], we didn’t know what to expect. I was doing law at the time [and] thinking it was going to be more of a hindrance … Go in to it because you want to [fall in love with] someone and hope that you do in the end.

Tell me about your blog.

My blog is called Love Always Anna. Initially I wanted it to be a lifestyle blog [but] I’m now focusing more on fashion and beauty.

What do you love about having a blog?

It has been a great way for me to share more positive and personal insights into my life. I was surprised how quickly it connected with my readers and I love receiving their comments about my recipes, travels and tips. I’ve started focusing more on fashion and styling to make it a place where readers can come to for inspiration. It is a case of “watch this space”, I guess!

What is your role within your law firm?

I’m pretty much everything. I’m a lawyer, I’m the bookkeeper, I’m admin. I do it all when I’m in there. I do go into court in certain trials.

Do people recognise you from The Bachelor during court trials?

There has been [an] occasion where I was in court and I turned around and this woman was being like “I love you” to me and I didn’t know if it was me or who she was looking at. I kept turning around and then I was like, “me?” and she is like, “I love you”. I was like, “This is the most awkward situation I’ve had in the court.” I do my best to kind of keep both separate – my legal career and my media career. There is no way they’re not going to overlap, but I try and keep it as separate. So I’ve got to make sure I uphold a good image and that doesn’t jeopardise my legal career because I’m still doing it.

Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?

I hope that I’m still doing what I’m doing. I love having this balance of still doing law and also my media career.

What do you do in your spare time, when you’re not working?

We love to travel, if we can go away for a weekend, whether it is within Australia or somewhere international. We love to even go to Bali for like three days. We’re both into sports. So we’ll be out training … playing tennis with the family. I’ll be hanging with my family a lot. Go over to my mum’s house for “Jude’s food”; get everyone over for dinner.

Style masterclass: Sneakers

8th March, 2016

113

If there’s one thing I’m loving at the moment it’s the fact sneakers have evolved from footwear for the gym to bonafide fashion staple. High end designers have given the trend their stamp of approval with labels such as Chanel and Valentino releasing their very own interpretation of this most practical of footwear. Here’s how to nail the trend.

Casual vs Dressy

Yes, there is such a thing as a casual sneaker and a dressy sneaker. I find the classic white leather Adidas Superstars or Stan Smiths are a little smarter and can work with dresses, playsuits and skirts for a more polished look while a sports shoe such as a black pair of Nikes work well with denim pieces such as shorts and jeans. You could opt for something slightly more classic and go for a canvas sneaker such as those by Superga which would work with a sweet sundress or a classic pair of denim shorts and a white tee a la Alexa Chung.

Clean sneakers regularly

If you’re going with white sneakers be sure to keep them clean so they don’t look like you’ve just pulled them out of your gym bag! Having pristine, crisp white sneakers is all part of the polished effect. If you opt for leather sneakers they can easily be wiped down and the laces can be put in the washing machine.

Keep it cropped

If you’re planning to wear your sneakers with pants make sure they’re fitted (skinny jeans are perfect) and cropped so you can see a flash of ankle. This is more flattering when you’re wearing a chunkier shoe as it draws the eye to the narrowest part of your leg.

Add feminine touches

Sneakers have quite a utilitarian look so it’s good to soften the look by teaming them with more feminine garments. Think pieces like a black slip dress or an A-line skirt. It’s all about maintaining balance with your outfit.

Go for streamlined

If a pair of sneakers looks like something you could run a marathon in then they’re probably best left for doing just that! Casual sneakers should be quite simple (think neutral colours like white or black) and looks more sleek and streamlined as opposed to the kind of style you would have worn to PE back in the day.

My go-to labels

3rd March, 2016

photo_16-08-2015_3_49_55_pm

I love discovering new up and coming designers but I also have a tried and tested stable of labels that I know I will always have something that will suit my style and aesthetic. Here’s who I turn to when I’m after…

Basics

It goes without saying but Bassike is at the top of the list. I love them for staples such as tees, singlets and casual pants. I also love Uniqlo for inexpensive but quality tees and Jac+Jack who do some really gorgeous basics that are a great quality.

Cardigans and jumpers

Winter is just around the corner so I will be stocking up on lots of jumpers and cardigans to layer throughout the cooler months. I love Uniqlo once again, this time for their cashmere knits which are a great quality but also reasonably priced; Skin and Threads for knits especially cardigans; and Jac + Jack also do really great jumpers. When it comes to jumpers, I find if I spend a bit more and invest in quality woollen and cashmere pieces they will last me season after season.

Work, formal and party wear

Work and evening events often transition from one to the other for me so I like to make sure my office attire will also work for an after work event such as a party or dinner. I always turn to Australian designers such as camilla and marc, Scanlan Theodore, Dion Lee, Bec & Bridge and Lover. While Bec & Bridge do a great party dress, I can’t go past Dion Lee for fashion-forward pieces and Scanlan Theodore for beautifully made items for the office such as blouses, dresses and pants. Lover do amazing dresses and camilla and marc are my favourite for everything from casual items such as jeans to dresses, to skirts and camis for a night out.

Statement heels

I buy at least 1-2 pairs of statement heels per season so I often splurge on a shoes that I know are of a great quality as opposed to buying lots of shoes that I know will have a limited shelf life. I opt for designers such as Aquazzura (these shoes are my current faves), Gianvito Rossi, Alaia, Givenchy, Balenciaga and Celine. Net-a-Porter, Matches Fashion and David Jones always have a really great selection.

My trusty Adidas sneakers

Casual shoes

I’m all about sneakers at the moment and I find the classic Superstar style by Adidas works well with most of my wardrobe (Stan Smiths are also a great option) and simple black Nikes are able to extend from active wear when I’m going for walks to casual day wear. If I’m after dressy flats I’ll turn to Me and Her for brogues and Mara and Mine for cute, quirky flats.

What are your favourite labels?
