What I Wore: Flower Power

7th January, 2020

I’m a firm believer that Aussie brands do summer clothing like no other. Our relaxed lifestyle really lends itself to inspiring plenty of designs that are just made for days spent enjoying the sun. One of the standout brands who do this so well is without a doubt, Zimmermann. I always find myself falling in love with so many things in every collection they do, and love how they always incorporate beautiful prints, intricate detailing and soft textural features into their clothes.

When I saw these shorts I could already see them becoming an integral part of my summer wardrobe. The 60s style print and the warm colour palette make them a definite cornerstone of any look. Also they work beautifully with neutrals as it really allows the shorts to pop. I wanted to add another statement piece to this look, but didn’t want to overwhelm my entire outfit, so this blouse was the perfect fit. The gorgeous silhouette with its mutton sleeves and the broderie anglaise are striking, but the crisp white allow it to still work back nicely with a colourful piece.

Accessorising this look was all about maintaining a simple and relaxed aesthetic. The white hat makes an elegant and practical addition to my look, while the straw bag and white slides maintain a resort vibe. Topped with white sunglasses that are in keeping with the 6os vibe of the shorts, this is one summer ensemble that’s going to have plenty of outings this season.

What I Wore: Short Story

5th February, 2019

A great pair of tailored shorts is always a handy summer staple to have. I like having a dressier pair of shorts in my collection that’s a bit more elevated than a pair of denim cut-offs, and one that I can wear everywhere from the office to a function. This high waisted pair from Zimmermann are the ideal mixture of a classic shape but with playful finishes such as the bauble trim (it also comes with a corsage belt that I wasn’t wearing on this day). With the shape and colour of these shorts, it’s easy to mix and match them with various tops such as a cami or a tee, but I decided to go for a Zimmermann floral appliqued blouse. The beautiful peach colour provided the perfect accent piece to the crisp white colour of the shorts and it had some great finishes such as the blouson sleeves and exaggerated cuffs.

As there was already so much going on with the top and shorts, I decided to stick to a pair of white Gucci sandals so as not to overwhelm the outfit. A transparent Staud bag added an on trend touch, whilst my marble Lucy Folk sunglasses added a little bit of fun to my overall look.

Reader question: How do I wear oversized shorts?

11th April, 2016

Dear Kate,

I really liked the outfit you posted on your Instagram where you were wearing oversized shorts. Do you have any tips on how to pull off this particular look?

From,

Belinda

Admittedly wearing something with a lot of volume can be a bit daunting as you want to avoid it overwhelming your frame. The key with wearing anything oversized is balance, balance, balance. Originally I wore a tight top with the denim shorts I was wearing (pictured above) however it didn’t look in proportion as I found wearing something fitted at the top overly exaggerated the volume in my shorts. I then swapped it out for a loose tee which I could tuck in to help give the outfit some volume on top. This helped to strike the right balance. By wearing similar proportions on the top and bottom, it helped define my waistline and in turn give me a bit of shape. Hope this helps!
