Simple ways to elevate denim

27th June, 2018

I am the first to admit that I would be lost without denim in my wardrobe. Jeans often make an appearance in many an outfit that I wear throughout the week and it’s a staple when I’m in off duty/mum mode as it’s just so easy. That said, I can also attest for how simple it is to elevate it with the right accessories and statement pieces and make it ideal for an event or a special occasion.

When it comes to denim I’m a skinny jeans girl all the way as I think it works best with my frame. However with the numerous styles available out there it’s not difficult to hone in on the ideal style for you—it just pays to persevere and check out a few different cuts (check out my tips for buying denim here) as what works for one person may not work for another. I also tend to gravitate towards a formfitting style as I find it works with most of my go-to items in my wardrobe. All my jackets to blazers, shirts and heels all work back with a pair of skinnies.

While jeans, a white tee and sneakers are an eternally stylish combination it can sometimes be hard to think beyond that and see how to dress up denim in a modern way that doesn’t require too much fussing around. I think elevating your it is a simple as it comes if you know the right pieces to turn to. Once you’ve pinpointed those key items you’re guaranteed to always find a way to turn your old faithfuls into something special.

Killer shoes

Great shoes can make any outfit look great. A pair of amazing heels teamed with denim can instantly make it look dressy and polished.

Printed blouse

Swap out your fave tee for a blouse instead. This is a great combination that works dressed up or down—all you have to do is switch your shoes according to the occasion.

Statement jacket

One way to lift trusty denim that requires minimal effort? Turn to the most amazing jacket in your closet. Whether it’s a tweed number or an edgy leather moto style you can never go wrong with outwear that pops.

Classic blazer

I can attest for how unbelievably handy blazers are to have in your style arsenal. And while they go with most things in my wardrobe they’re a dream to pair with denim. A simple black blazer can really turn jeans into something special. Add a pair of knockout earrings and you’re done.

Understated flats

A pair of loafers is a no-brainer pairing with jeans. When you want to be comfortable to run around all day but still need to maintain an element of polish, stylish flats will fit the bill every time.

New season denim pieces to update your look

1st October, 2017

There’s no easier way to update your wardrobe than with a touch of denim. It’s super easy to work with in any incarnation whether it be a chambray slip dress paired with white sneakers or a pair of high waisted jeans with slides. For me my jeans are always front and centre in my wardrobe as I wear them to death and this season I’m all about a relaxed pair of boyfriend jeans and skinny jeans for a dressier option. As summer draws near I’ll be switching to denim skirts and shorts and pairing them with tees and singlets for a casual off duty ensemble that I know I can pull together in a flash. Denim is an easy way to update any look and this season there are so many options to choose from from dresses to jackets that refreshing your wardrobe is a breeze.

A life well spent with Marks & Spencer

7th August, 2017

Things can undoubtedly get hectic and busy at times but if there’s one thing I’ve learnt it’s that the key to a well-lived life is making time for small everyday pleasures. This is why I was happy to team up with Marks and Spencer on their latest campaign that aims to encourage everyone to live life fully and spend it well. I’m a big believer that that you only get one shot at living so it’s important to prioritise the things that matter. I’ve learnt not to always save things for a “special occasion” but to ensure that each day is spent in the very best way possible.

For me, my family, is my entire world so spending time with my girls is one of the most meaningful things I can do. I always prioritise being with Sophia and Grace whether it’s spending time playing together outdoors or chatting over breakfast or reading them a story at night. Everything always seems just that little bit better when I’m with them.

What’s a life well spent without treating myself to the little things that put a smile on my face? My daily ritual of walking to my favourite café and buying coffee is a must. It’s a small thing but it helps kick off my day and puts me in the right frame of mind. Also, it’s a definite treat but I always buy flowers for my home. It doesn’t have to be a big over the top bunch but I think a lovely bouquet of blooms in the house is always a nice reminder to treat myself to the things that enrich my surroundings.

It goes without saying that fashion is a big passion of mine so it does feature heavily in my life and it means that I’m always prepared to invest a little bit more in my wardrobe and prioritise quality over quantity. I’d rather spend money on pieces that will last. This is why the denim range at Marks & Spencer really resonated with me, especially for someone that lives in jeans. There are plenty of options in the range so I’m always guaranteed to find something that suits my aesthetic, is crafted well, and at a reasonable price point plus as a bonus it’s delivered really quickly. I actually ended up buying the mum and skinny styles as I couldn’t resist either one. They’re both stylish, fit well and are comfortable (a must with two girls to chase after). And I have to say, there’s nothing like the feeling of slipping on a brand new pair of jeans and taking it out on its very first outing to put a smile on my face!

Over the years I’ve adopted the mindset to make the most of every moment. I’m all about prioritising quality in every aspect of my life. I spend less of my time on the things that don’t matter and spend more of it focusing on the things that do. And ultimately isn’t that what living is all about?

What I Wore: Weekend Casual

3rd August, 2017

When it comes to my down time I like to keep things comfortable yet polished. One of my go-to combinations for weekend dressing is a great pair of jeans and a white shirt—a classic pairing that always looks effortless. The key to to elevating this look is all in the details. This Karen Walker peasant top with pintucks and tassels elevates this casual piece into a stylish weekend staple. The straw boater and clutch add some natural textures to the look whilst the black Bassike sandals add a bold element and provides a striking point of difference to the neutral tones of the rest of the ensemble. I’ve found this outfit is ideal for a day of doing everything from grabbing a coffee to hanging out with my family without compromising on style.

What I Wore: Off duty staples

4th July, 2017

When it comes to my leisure time the only must when it comes to what I’m wearing is that I’m comfortable. I’m usually spending time with my family so I like to feel relaxed, yet still pulled together. This is why my go-to is always a great pair of jeans. It’s one of my key off duty staples so I like to invest in a sturdy pair which I know will last. A simple white button down shirt is also an easy, effortless way to complement denim and whilst it’s comfortable, it always looks polished no matter what the day throws my way. I love the fact that sneakers have become a style staple. I’ll always opt for a pair of sneakers as I find they’re easy to match with virtually anything. My favourite pair at the moment is my Gucci sneakers as they’re understated and made for busy days but still add a bit of a luxe touch to any look. Even if I’m off duty I always like to elevate my ensemble with my choice of accessories. A great pair of statement sunglasses and a simple shoulder bag provide the perfect finishing touches to any type of weekend wear.

What I Wore: The Statement Sleeve

8th June, 2017

A white shirt is always a style staple in my wardrobe but lately I’ve been stepping away from the classic slimline button down by embracing the statement sleeve. I have found that adopting a different silhouette is a great way to instantly rejuvenate a traditional look and take it in a totally new direction. The flared sleeve on this Tome shirt give this ensemble a more relaxed feel and when paired with light denim and slides, it’s an off-duty look that is polished yet effortless. A simple look needs a punchy accessory and my favourite Gucci Dionysus handbag perfectly fits the bill.

4 ways to do denim with a white shirt

28th April, 2017

If there’s one thing that I can’t live without it’s a pair of great jeans. Denim is a workhorse in my wardrobe as it’s so versatile and goes with virtually everything. It’s always a great go-to option for me when I need to get out the door fast as it’s so easy to dress it up or down. Finding the perfect pair of jeans is key and I find it’s important to try on various styles to pinpoint the right fit and style for your shape. When I’m on a mission to find a new pair of jeans I’d rather every style I’m considering is in the one place to make it easier to compare them. I always head to David Jones as they stock great international and local brands and offer up every style you could possibly want which makes it easy to try on a few different pairs and find The One.

Once I’ve found the perfect pair I wear them non-stop and one look I wear to death is the classic combination of a white shirt and jeans. There’s just something so effortless about it and I find it’s simple to pull together a look for different occasions simply by changing the style of shirt I’m wearing. Case in point: below I’ve managed to maintain the same style formula of a white shirt and jeans but achieved four distinctly different looks by adding a few key accessories, wearing a different shirt style, all while wearing the same jeans. Proof that you can pretty much wear denim with everything!

Look #1: Night Out

My new J Brand Maria High Rise jeans are so versatile as the style is quite simple and pared back which means its easy to wear it in a variety of different ways. I’ve teamed this look with an off the shoulder top and added bold accessories such as my gold Gucci heels and choker to glam it up for the evening.

Look #2: Office Wear

Jeans can be office-appropriate. I’ve teamed my jeans with a crisp button down shirt, a pair of loafers and a structured handbag to keep the look polished and work ready.

Look #3: Mum on duty

When I’m out with Sophia and Grace comfort is key so denim is the ideal option. I can afford to go a bit more relaxed when I’m on mum duty so I have opted for a star print white shirt and statement sunglasses to add a bit of fun to the outfit. Sneakers are a must so I can easily run around after the girls and a crossbody bag leaves both my hands free (an absolute necessity when dealing with a toddler and a baby).

Look #4: Relaxation Mode

This would be an ideal look for the weekend. Jeans paired with a peasant top and simple sandals give the look a relaxed vibe and a neutral clutch and straw boater give the outfit some added texture.

Looking for new season denim? I’ve rounded up my fave buys

21st April, 2017

I can’t live without a great pair of jeans. They’re a reliable go-to when I need to pull together an outfit fast as they’re so easy to dress up or down. I usually opt for skinny jeans (both with and without distressing) as I find they work best with my frame – I just make sure they’re hemmed right at the ankle to help elongate my frame. I’ve found after trying on a million different pairs of jeans this is the style that works for me.

If you haven’t yet found yourself a pair of an amazing jeans to live in throughout winter then it’s high time you start your search. This season the options for new denim styles is endless! A straight leg style with a slightly higher rise is a perfect option for everyday casual – you can team it with a simple tee and sneakers for weekend wear or a blouse with loafers for something a little more polished. For something slightly different the unfinished hem is a key trend this season and makes for a slightly edgier look whilst a flared hem looks very of the moment. Whatever you do just be sure to opt for a cropped-at-the-ankle length to ensure the most flattering fit.

What I Wore: Denim Daze

20th December, 2016

I love the relaxed look of a summer dress paired with denim. This striped Acler dress looks quite dressy on its own but when teamed with a frayed jacket it gives it a little bit more of a fun, quirky vibe. I can’t get enough of the the above Steele statement jacket with its hand embroidered finish – the floral detail and slogan gives it a point of difference and looks quite fresh when teamed with crisp white. I wanted to add some interesting accessories to elevate the look and couldn’t go past Gucci. The embellished Dionysus canvas bag and gold heels with a pearl detailing perfectly offset the pared back, simplicity of the rest of the outfit.
