7 shoes that have proven themselves in cost per wear

9th April, 2018

My wardrobe purchases are always considered—I make sure that whatever I buy will have longevity, has plenty of versatility and is of a good quality. When it comes to accessories, especially shoes and bags, I have to say that most of my buys are of the designer variety. This is simply because I love the fact that they’re always made beautifully and I know that the cost per wear is great.

I have a handful of shoes that were initially a splurge but the number of times I have worn them over the last few years has ensured that I’ve been able to get the most value for money. And they still look great. I have a few favourite brands but there’s definitely one designer brand that has consistently delivered on the shoe front, and it shows because almost half the shoes on this list is from their range! When it comes to footwear, this is what I consider to fall into the money well spent category.

Marco de Vincenzo plaited velvet sandals

These are a statement shoe through and through so at first glance you may think I’d get limited use out of them but it has been quite the opposite. I’ve been able to wear them on so many different occasions. The pink hue and velvet fabrication make them striking but when used as an accent piece to add a pop of colour to an oufit they’re able to be worked back with myriad looks so easily.

Gucci Willow gold leather t-strap heels

I’ve had these shoes for a few years now and you know what? I love them now as much as I did when I first got them. I think gold is such a great colour as it can be worn with so many different outfits. I’ve worn these to the Melbourne Cup to work functions and weddings and I’d seriously be lost without them. The pearl detail also gives it a little something extra and adds a luxe feel.

Balenciaga knife spandex sock boots

If you don’t have a pair of sock boots for winter yet start hunting down a pair because I can guarantee you’ll wear them to death. The design of this Balenciaga pair is quite simple and streamlined making them a style chameleon. I’ve worn them to Fashion Week and to big launches and in street style shoots and they are worth every penny.

Kate Waterhouse Chanel at Marais boutique launch Melbourne balmain blazer bec and bridge dress balenciaga boots chanel bag 3

Alaïa Bombe studded heels

My love for these shoes is endless. And I swear that they are ridiculously versatile. They’ve become a go-to in my wardrobe because the design is simple enough to be able to easily pair with a multitude of ensembles, however the finishing details elevate them into something special. These shoes have made an appearance at everything from big gala events to launches and nights out with the girls.

Gucci Princetown leather slippers

Gucci can seriously do no wrong. Their footwear range is always on point, just that little bit different, and the finishing details are always next-level. These slippers are given a special touch by the embroidered flowers, however still maintain the classic sensibility of the brand with the horsebit buckle and silhouette. I’ve found I can wear these shoes with everything from dresses to pants, and transition them from work to off duty style easily.

Gucci New Ace sneakers

And hello again, Gucci! I swear white sneakers have become an indispensible part of my wardrobe and these especially have become a mainstay in most of my looks each week. I wear them when I’m running around with the girls, to the office, if I’m on the go with work appointments… the list is endless. They’re also so comfortable which earns them major brownie points. Worth every cent.

New season flats that are stylish and comfortable

6th April, 2018

If there’s one thing that’s paramount to me when it comes to my style these days it’s comfortable footwear. I tend to favour flats most days unless I’ve got an event that requires something a little dressier. That said, flats have certainly come a long way–they’re now equally as stylish if not more so than their slightly more vertiginous counterparts and the best bit is you can walk in them all day without any issues. Whether it’s a ballet flat or a great  loafer you’re after, these are some of the best styles out there at the moment that will have you walking around in style.

Miu Miu patent leather point toe flats

The sweet gingham strap and the blush pink tone make this the ideal option for those days when you want an ultra feminine look.

Malone Souliers pearl embellished mules

The hue, the pearls… it all makes for a truly luxe look.

Tony Bianco Molly block heel loafers

Sometimes simplicity is best and this classic style would work well for work and play.

Siren Avalon slides

I love embracing a touch of animal print from time to time and this shoe adds a great bold touch to a look.

Jimmu Choo Leema ballerinas

The elegant style of this shoe is taken in a slightly edgier direction by the studded detail. A great option for those times when you want an elevated flat that looks dressy.

Chloé Lauren scalloped leather ballet flats

If you don’t own a pair of neutral flats it’s definitely work considering this beauty by Chloé. The scalloped edges make for a pretty finish whilst the simple style makes it quite versatile.

Jil Sander high shine leather ballet flats

The patent finish and gold ankle strap give this directional shoe a few classic finishes.

Gucci Jordaan leather loafers

I spoke earlier this week about the everlasting appeal of these shoes. However if you want to dial it up, why not consider a fire engine red pair? A guaranteed showstopper!

Nude Footwear Valerie lace up metallic flats

A pair of lace up flats is a great alternative to a loafer or ballet silhouette and the metallic finish give this shoe some punch.

Work appropriate shoes with loads of style cred

25th February, 2018

As I mentioned in this post earlier this week I wore heels all day, every day when I worked in an office. Granted I probably had a bit more leeway in the styles that I wore because of working in fashion but I was still conscious that everything had to be work appropriate. I know how difficult it was at times to find work shoes that were still on trend whilst not looking completely over the top for daytime whilst heading to the printer or doing a morning coffee run. These days however, there’s never been a better time for shoes that are totally ideal from 9 to 5 but are still cool enough to head straight to dinner or drinks after work without missing a beat. In fact, you may even want to pull them out for the weekend such is their style power. Here are some styles you should definitely become familiar with — they’ll up your work shoe game and turn more than a few co-workers’ heads in the process.

The slingback with edge

Kitten heel slingbacks have made a comeback and not only are they comfortable, you’ll find them in a variety of classic shades, and some with hits of colour to give them a sartorial lift.

Patterned mule

This style would look amazing with a cropped pant, but equally so with a dress or skirt —essentially anything that flashes a bit of ankle is ideal when it comes to the mule.

Trusty loafers

Yes, you can wear flats to the office. Especially loafers which will save your feet and they look pretty darn stylish while doing so. Gucci do a great pair but as they’re such a huge trend right now, there are plenty of affordable options out there.

Classic pumps

A pair of classic pointy heels are work-friendly and can also extend to your off duty wardrobe. Black is of course a great all-rounder but for an alternative, try navy. It works equally as well but definitely has a bit more personality.

Sock boot

I love my sock boots (pictured above) and this coming winter I know they’ll come in very handy. They’re ideal for wearing with skirts and wide leg pants as they have a nice streamlined silhouette.

A touch of embellishment

Yes, a pair of black pumps is a failsafe as far as work shoes go but look for cute finishing touches such as a sweet bow to lift it and make it a little more interesting.

Cutout pump

This style means business! Whilst a super high heel would probably be better suited for those days when you know your desk will just be a few metres away these are sharp, chic and the kind of power work shoe you pull out for big meetings.

The Mary Jane

The ever adorable Mary Jane style shoe is a perfect style for the office but look for finishing touches such as a coloured strap or textured fabrication.

It’s time to update your sneakers to this new style…

25th October, 2017

Kate Waterhouse Gucci metallic sneakers

While our love affair with white sneakers will no doubt remain if you’re after a new alternative shoe option to add to your athleisure wardrobe then it’s time to set your sights to all things metallic. You’ll find high shine options from every brand from Gucci to Converse and it’s just the thing to elevate a casual look into something that’s instantly fashion forward. Whilst a pair of silver or gold sneakers might at first seem difficult to integrate into your wardrobe I can tell you its anything but. I wear my silver Gucci sneakers to death as I find the hue actually works with most things that I’d usually pair with my trusty white kicks. Consider it a neutral that has just that little bit of extra sparkle.

New statement heels to love

21st October, 2017

There are times when you just want your accessories to do the talking and nothing is more suited to the task than a pair of statement heels. Whenever I feel that my outfit needs a bit of punch it’s the one thing that’s guaranteed to deliver.

When it comes to statement heels I think you can go as bold and daring as you want—often it’s a case of the more adventurous the style the better. However if you’re not one to go too over the top you could start with a heel in a vibrant colour a la my candy red Gucci heels above. But if you really want to go all out look to dramatic embellishments such as oversized bows or jewelled adornments which can turn an ordinary heel into a work of art.

The great thing about a statement heel is that you don’t really need to fret too much about the rest of your look as often a killer pair of shoes is all you need to really elevate your look to one that will impress. It’s the simple addition that requires minimal effort but delivers oh-so much. When it comes to this trend, if someone stops you to comment on your footwear then you know your job is done.

Tips for making statement slides work

27th July, 2017

Kate Waterhouse Gucci Princetown statement slide

If there’s one shoe style that’s very much on trend at the moment it’s the statement slide. Whether it’s a fur trim or oversized bow embellishment, I’ve well and truly embraced them as a staple of my wardrobe because not only are they surprisingly versatile in what they can be paired with, they’re also comfortable and are easy to run around in which are both key requirements when it comes to footwear for me these days. If you’ve yet to embrace this trend because you’re not sure how to incorporate them into your everyday look, here are my top tips…

Flash some ankle

At first glance a pair of furry slides may not seem the most wearable of pieces but I can definitely vouch for the fact my Gucci Princetown slides get a constant workout in my wardrobe. So, what’s the key to making it work? When it comes to statement slides (furry or otherwise) I’d say the key to a flattering look is flashing a little ankle. For me, a winning combination is teaming them with black slouchy pants that are tapered at the ankle paired with a blazer or jacket or a pair of cropped jeans and a tee.

Keep the rest of your look simple

If you’ve got a lot going on when it comes to your footwear keep the rest of your outfit quite pared back. If you’re wearing jewel encrusted statement slides then it’s probably not the best idea to then pair them with anything that’s quite loud or over the top as it can look a little overwhelming. Let the shoes do all the talking!

Cropped is best

A cropped or midi length is the most flattering length to pair with statement slides. It’s short enough to allow the shoes to take centre stage and sticks to the cardinal rule of showing a little ankle. I find a maxi length is a little bit too long as the slides end up getting lost amongst the fabric. Stick to a cropped length and you can’t go wrong.

The one shoe style I’ll definitely be buying this season

6th March, 2017

When it comes to my autumn/winter wardrobe there’s one shoe style I’ll definitely be purchasing – the ankle boot. A pair of quality black ankle boots always take me through the cooler months and is  a guaranteed way to update any outfit. You can opt for a pair of sky high stiletto style boots if you’re looking for some sexy footwear to take you from drinks to dinner or a pair of flat boots as a comfy option when you’ve got a busy day ahead of you. If you’re intending to wear them to death, be sure to have them resoled beforehand to ensure that they can withstand the wear and tear of constant outings.

I’ve rounded up some of my fave ankle boot styles to inspire your next shopping trip…

The one thing I do every season

16th January, 2017

I love the start of each season as it means I can go shopping and make some key additions to my wardrobe. I often try and pinpoint a few key pieces that I’ll need as opposed to going crazy and buying up every trend in sight. However if there’s one thing I do each season without fail it’s this: I buy shoes in black and neutral. Yep, every season. I’ve done it for years and I’ve found making those strategic shoe purchases will get me through autumn, winter, summer and spring.

Whilst I’ll stick to the same colours I’ll obviously alter the style of shoe according to the weather so in winter I’ll buy a boot and a closed toe shoe such as a pump and if it’s summer I’ll buy both open toed shoes whether it be a sandal or stiletto. A black and a neutral shoe will go with virtually everything in my wardrobe so I know I’m guaranteed to get a lot of use out of it plus buying a season’s key style will update my look accordingly. It’s an easy way to look on trend without having to change your entire wardrobe.
