What I Wore: Monochromatic Moment

7th July, 2020

Working with varying hues of a single shade can result in a really striking look, and is such a modern way to play with colour. When I saw this Manning Cartell look in varying shades of tan I knew it was the perfect opportunity to do it. And while all three play really nicely together, the beauty of working with neutral pieces is that they also work well separately. I could easily wear this coat, knit and pants with other pieces I already own, making them versatile options throughout winter.

I wanted to continue the colour thread in my accessories, so it was the perfect opportunity to incorporate my Bottega Veneta mesh heels. While the rest of the look is quite classic, these heels are a little punchier in its design, so is the perfect counterpoint. I have had this Gucci bag for a few years and it was the ideal option for this outfit. Just the right shade, look and feel made it a no-brainer option. I finished this look off with black Poppy Lissiman sunglasses, which also added just a hint of contrasting colour.

The next time you want to pull together an impactful look, consider working with a monochromatic colour palette. It’s easy to do but oh-so effective at making a statement.

What I Wore: Nine to Five

4th February, 2020

Now that school holidays are over it’s time to officially get back into work mode. I wanted to set the tone for the year with a new office look and couldn’t go past classic black and white.

I’ve always been a fan of monochrome outfits, particularly for work because they’re always guaranteed to look polished and professional. Of course working in fashion allows me to play with cuts and silhouettes a little more than a corporate setting and loved that this Bec and Bridge look had a modern sensibility but maintained the sharp, sophisticated feel of a black and white colour palette.

The beauty of these pieces is that while they work beautifully together I can easily pair them with other pieces already in my wardrobe. I can easily dress the skirt down with a tee, while the shirt could go with denim. I love plenty of versatility when it comes to any new additions to my closet.

I decided to stick the the same colour palette with my accessories. So white pumps by Bottega Veneta and simple black sunglasses by Poppy Lissiman were the perfect complementary additions to this ensemble. Now, I’m officially ready to throw myself into a busy new work year!

What I Wore: Orange You Glad

25th September, 2018

Co-ordinated sets really are my new favourite shortcut to looking super polished. I loved this checked jacket and skirt by Hansen & Gretel for its 60s feel and Jackie Onassis vibes. Also the check and vibrant orange really make it pop and make a statement. A skirt suit is always a great go-to for work or play, and I for one can attest to how easy this particular look is to wear to the office, a function or to a special lunch.

I wanted the rest of my look to echo the polish of the suit so I knew I needed sophisticated accessories to add as finishing touches. As far as shoes went I knew I wanted something dressy but stilettos would have been too much so a great compromise was my new slingback Dior flats. It maintains the polished feel of the jacket and skirt without me looking just a little too dressed up. I maintained the 60s aesthetic by opting for a structured top handle bag in a complementary orange shade which really added a fun touch to the whole ensemble. And what better finishing touch than a pair of cat eye sunglasses which was also a reflection of the era.

What I Wore: Date with Kate with Sabrina Carpenter

18th September, 2018

Date with Kates are always fun and a great excuse to pull out a new outfit. For my recent Date with Kate with Sabrina Carpenter, I wanted to go for something feminine and polished for our meeting at Sydney’s Hacienda. One look I’m really loving at the moment is layering slip dresses over a crisp white tee. I think this 90s inspired look is fresh and so easy to pull together. I wanted to add a formal element to the look so I opted to wear my Balmain blazer over the top.

I wanted to wear heels with this outfit but thought a stiletto would be too much so instead decided to pair it with my Balenciaga sock boots. The silhouette of the shoe is fitted and streamlined enough that it doesn’t look too bulky against the flowy nature of the dress, however it grounds the look at the same time.

As far as accessories go I wanted simple and classic so I decided that my Dior bag which with its structured shape and gold chain strap looks was the perfect addition the look. I’m still really into the small sunglasses trend and this pair by Poppy Lissiman is certainly getting quite the workout of late. I like the fact it manages to look both unfussy and dramatic all at the same time.

What I Wore: Spot the difference

11th September, 2018

Polka dot prints are always such a great option when going for anything patterned as it’s such a classic print. An skirt suit is the ideal go-to when I want to look polished and professional, however when in a spotted print it looks more fresh and fun. This Hansen and Gretel blazer and skirt works beautifully together however I like the fact they can also stand on their own when worn separately. I could see myself wearing the jacket with jeans and pointed pumps whilst the skirt would look amazing with a simple white tee and sneakers.

I wanted to ground the outfit a little and think it needed more than a delicate heel so opted for my Balenciaga sock boots. They provided the height that I was after but added a little grit to the look at the same time. I’ve been getting a lot of wear out of my new Dior clutch recently as it’s just the right size and colour to wear with almost everything in my wardrobe whilst the handy chain strap makes it easy to transition it to a shoulder bag when necessary. I can’t go out without a pair of sunglasses handy and my trusty Poppy Lissiman frames were the perfect match for this look.

What I Wore: Day to Night

28th August, 2018

There are pieces that I have in my wardrobe that are definitely more evening appropriate but that doesn’t mean that that should be their only purpose. Often looks that are for night events tend to be a little more expensive due to their style and construction, so to ensure that I’m able to make every fashion dollar stretch further I’ve taken to reworking them to be suitable for daywear. And it’s not at all hard or expensive to do.

One way I’ve been doing the night to day transformation recently is with the below Zimmermann top which is too pretty to relegate just for the evening so recently I’ve been teaming it with jeans to make it more suitable for casual wear. This is something that you can easily do with other pieces in your wardrobe. Often teaming something that’s a bit dressier with something more relaxed such as jeans can tone it down and make it appropriate for off duty style. I teamed this particular look back with a pair of slingback flats which are polished yet not too over the top for day and a mini crossbody bag. The end result was a laidback look but with just the right amount of polish.

If I were to wear the top at night though it’s a different story. In the evenings I tend to favour a look that’s a bit more feminine and formal. So in this instance I swapped the denim over for a midi skirt in a similar colour palette as the top. And switched out the casual crossbody bag for a structured clutch with a chain strap handle which definitely adds to the nighttime vibe. I’d also go for dressy heels and leave the flats at home. Overall what I was going for with this particular look was something that’s a little more sophisticated and dressed up, lifted up by chic accessories that have a modern feel.

I did the below transformations with just one top but you can do this with pretty much anything you’ve designated as ‘nighttime only’. All it takes is a few key choices that dial down it’s dressy feel for day, then swap it for elevated pairings at night and you’ve instantly got double the wear out of your wardrobe.

What I Wore: Australian Fashion Week 2018 Day 5

17th May, 2018

I told you I’m all about the suit at the moment. And with it being the last day of Fashion Week for me I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to wear this beautiful Alexander McQueen blazer. The cut, the fit and what a colour! These Maggie Marilyn pants have a slightly sporty vibe about them and made the ideal contrast piece to the structured, polished feel of the blazer.

When wearing such a bold, vibrant colour I think it’s a good idea to keep accessories quite pared back. I kept to a simple black quilted mini top handle bag by Dior to carry all my essentials and Christian Louboutin bow heels to give me some additional height (this is also a must when wearing wide leg pants). Small frame Poppy Lissiman sunglasses rounded out my look and helped marry the sleek and fashion forward look I was going for.

What I Wore: Australian Fashion Week 2018 Day 2

14th May, 2018

I wore something quite classic yesterday but today I wanted to mix it up a little. My look today is a little edgier and all about playing with different textures. Usually my outfits start with a single piece and in this instance it was all about the cropped Prada denim jacket. The feathered collar really upped the glam factor and seemed so fitting for the occasion. I also loved mixing relaxed denim with the dramatic nature of the feathers for a truly striking centrepiece to my look.

With such a statement piece already in place, I thought I could take it up a notch even more by opting for a black polyurethane Georgia Alice skirt. I thought it provided the perfect contrast piece to the softer and more playful nature of the jacket.

As far as shoes go I decided on simple black heels to temper the dramatic nature of the rest of my outfit. But I think you can always afford to have a little fun with your accessories! With the current trend towards sunglasses with smaller frames I gravitated towards these Poppy Lissiman sunglasses. Sharp with a slightly futuristic vibe I thought they went perfectly with the rest of my ensemble. My trusty Gucci Dionysius bag can always be called upon to add a fun feature to any look and in this instance it was the perfect fashion full stop.

What I Wore: The Shirt Dress

17th April, 2018

A white shirt is an enduring wardrobe classic simply because it’s so versatile and looks great without having to do much at all. It always looks polished and classy. So it stands to reason that a white shirt dress would fall into the same category. There’s something about the structured style of a shirt dress that makes it look elegant but there’s also scope to have a bit more fun. This Rebecca Vallance shirt dress is one such style. Whilst it still maintains the button down, collared silhouette of a traditional shirt, it also features beautiful ruched, bell sleeves that give it a more fashion forward feel.

While a shirt dress can easily be quite casual or dressy, I chose to go down the slightly more dressed up route with this particular ensemble. Against crisp white, black and bold pops of colour work equally as well so I decided to go for both! In this instance I opted to wear my favourite, go-to Alaïa studded heels and a bright and fun, Poppy Lissiman clutch. The red metallic and the eye print really adds some energy to my overall look and is a definite talking point. Simple cat eye sunglasses with a vintage feel help round out my ensemble and give it a touch of glam.
