What’s on my shopping wish list this month

1st March, 2019

It’s time to officially farewell summer and say hello to autumn but that doesn’t mean I’m not trying to squeeze in a few last summery purchases. That said it’s the also the perfect time to start prepping my new season wardrobe. I’m embracing warm, earthy tones of tan and beige along with vibrant shades of burgundy and red. If you’re on the hunt for some great new pieces, check out my wish list for a little inspo…

Chloe Faye medium leather and suede shoulder bag

I love the warm tones of this bag plus it’s just the right size for carrying all my daily essentials.

1064 Studio gold plated cuff

Fun costume jewellery that has a bit of extra personality is one thing that’s made elevating my looks that much easier.

Victoria Beckham waffle knit midi dress

I love dresses with a simple silhouette that can be dressed up or down. This dress will work now with heels but I can also transition it to autumn/winter with a jacket and boots.

TDE taupe Samsung Note 8 case

I like changing up phone cases and this one is a beautifully sleek design.

Sandro Lila belt

Statement belts are always a great way to elevate a look especially in such a bold shade.

Nina Armando Taylor shoe

This is a great shoe that will help lift an outfit by adding a bright pop of colour.

Paloma Barcelo Auriane wedges

I always gravitate towards wedges as they’re the ideal shoe for wearing to events like the polo or the races where I don’t want to be sinking in grass with stilettos!

Maggie Marilyn Far Far Away sweater

The simple design and colour palette of this sweater makes it the ideal versatile piece for the cooler months.

Eugenia Kim Mallory silk hair tie

Scrunchies are having a moment and this is a fun option that’s both decorative and functional.

Rebecca Vallance Harlow mini dress

How cute is this dress? Love the shape and the colour and I can see myself getting plenty of wear out of this.

Rejina Pyo wide leg chambray pants

This chic pair of wide leg pants has an effortless vibe that I really like.

Eres metallic trimmed swimsuit

A totally glam swimsuit option I know, but how gorgeous is the gold detail?

Johanna Ortiz gold toned earrings

I can see myself wearing this to multiple occasions. It’s just the right design to be versatile but interesting enough to stand out.

Ray Ban Clubmaster tortoiseshell sunglasses

A classic shape and brand, these glasses are perfect for weekends spent relaxing and enjoying the sun.

Dolce & Gabbana The Only One perfume

I’ve been on the hunt for a new scent and this one is so dreamy.

Fashion, What I Wore

What I Wore: Pink Lady

25th January, 2019

There’s no better time than now to embrace bright pops of colour. Summer just lends itself to fun, playful shades so it seemed fitting to embrace this bubblegum pink Rebecca Vallance dress. The colour is great and I love the bow straps and the subtle tiered ruffled hem which give it a feminine silhouette.

I wanted to keep the colour going throughout my ensemble so I opted for this transparent bag by Staud. The PVC and leather tote adds an on trend touch to my outfit, whilst still carrying the girly vibe into my accessories.

Most of my outfits aren’t complete without a pair of sunnies and this particular look called for something punchy so I opted for a pair of marbled cat eye sunglasses by Lucy Folk. I wanted to keep my footwear quite simple and my white Gucci sandals make for the ideal classic finishing touch.

What I Wore: True Blues Black Tie Dinner

29th May, 2018

It’s always nice to have the opportunity to attend black tie events as it’s the perfect excuse to get dressed up. There’s just something quite special about being able to put on a gown and wear something I wouldn’t ordinarily get to wear to most events. I was Luke’s guest at the New South Wales Rugby League True Blues Annual Black Tie Dinner last night and wanted to wear blue in support of NSW’s team colour. I couldn’t have asked for a better option than this navy Rebecca Vallance dress. I always love dresses with an amazing feature on the back and the tie detail was so beautiful on this. It elevated the dress and really gave it a point of difference. The off the shoulder silhouette and ruffled accents gave the dress a romantic feel and made it the ideal option for the event.

Given the neckline, I wanted simple, unfussy hair so I scraped my hair back into a low bun but I knew I wanted something striking when it came to my jewellery. I opted for vintage drop earrings which had just the right amount of glamour for such an occasion.

Date with Kate: Rebecca Vallance

27th May, 2018

Since her first show in Paris in 2011, Rebecca Vallance has cultivated a brand into a celebrity favourite and one that is stocked both locally and internationally. Her designs have been seen on everyone from Emily Blunt to Rachel McAdams and Chrissy Teigen and is now available at designer boutiques including Harvey Nichols, Net-a-Porter and My Theresa, along with bricks and mortar stores in Sydney and Melbourne. However that’s only just the beginning. As one of Australia’s top designers, Rebecca has her sights set on expanding her brand both at home and globally, and from our chat she’s not about to slow down any time soon. Here I chat to Rebecca about the two women she would love to dress, the one piece she considers to be one of her standout designs and why she only ever wears her own label.

What’s the latest with you?

I have just come back from London. I was there for Harrods and Harvey Nichols, and meeting with press over there. So it went really well. The brand’s on a big trajectory over there, so it’s really exciting to be there and be a part of it.

I know it’s amazing. I think last time I interviewed you, you were about to show at Australian Fashion Week.

Ah yes. Two years ago. Oh my god.

Now you’re showing internationally.

Yeah. So in that two years we picked up Net-a-Porter, and all the big international majors like MyTheresa. Then we’ve opened our stores now.

Oh yes, that’s right. You had just opened [in Sydney’s] Mosman.

Just opened Mosman. There’s Armadale [in Victoria] as well, which is a beautiful store. We’ve just opened The Strand [in Sydney] last week, two weeks ago, which is beautiful, and the pop-up in Paddington [in Sydney].

Congratulations! So why did you choose The Strand?

We could see from our eCommerce site that we were sending a lot [of orders] to the city, and we just wanted our customers to be able to come to the store and have the full Rebecca Vallance experience. To be able to see the full collection.

When you first started your label did you ever imagine that it would grow to what it has done now?

Look that was the goal, I hoped, but I think from day one, when I launched it in London, I always wanted it to have an international DNA and an international customer. Yeah, that’s always been the focus. We’re thrilled it’s going so well.

Where do you find your inspiration?

It changes every season. Like the collection that’s in store at the moment was inspired by one of Pablo Picasso’s works, The Ladies of Avignon. But then the Resort Collection, I was planning my husband’s 40th in Capri, and [I was inspired by] the colours of Capri. So it really depends what’s going on with me at the time and what I’m thinking about.

Out of all your collections, what has been the biggest stand-out piece that you’ve designed?

Oh wow. Look, I think [TV presenter] Sylvia Jeffreys‘ wedding dress was definitely quite special. But every season we evolve the brand. Every season there’s a new favourite. We’re definitely known for our dresses, but suiting for us is having a huge moment at the moment. You wore the Maya Suit.

Oh I love that suit.

Yeah. I think it’s about evolving the brand to a point where we’re known for most of the women’s wardrobe. You know options for everything. I think too, we’ve just launched Pre-Fall today, and that’s beautiful, that’s really special. I think that’s probably the collection I’m most proud of to date.

That’s amazing. You’ve had so many celebrities wear your outfits. Who are some of your highlights?

I think Emily Blunt was a highlight. She did a great speech [for Variety magazine] and she wore Rebecca Vallance for that. But we’ve got some great girls in the pipelines at the moment that are about to wear RV.

I noticed when I was in London last week, everyone knew of the brand, which was really exciting, and all the editors were already across it and already wearing it themselves. I think that’s exciting. You can see it’s obviously picked up an international following, and The Strand’s done really well already, so that’s good.

If you could dress any celebrity, who would it be?

Nicole Kidman or Cate Blanchett.

You are a mum of two, young boys.

Yes.

How do you juggle work, running a successful business, and having two kids?

It’s so full-on. I am obsessed with my two little boys, they are just adorable. They’re so sweet. I look forward to every day. I love going home to give them dinner, and bath them, and play, and hang out. I think it’s about priorities. There are times where they really need me around 24/7, and there are times where they don’t, so it’s about prioritising, about what I’m doing every day and making sure that I’m available for both. But it’s also too quality over quantity.

So if my boys need me, then being at home, but if the business needs me then being at work. So I just do my best. I’m not saying I’ve got it perfected but I do my best.

What’s your number one style tip?

I think it’s not about what you wear. It’s how you wear it. I think if you wear anything with confidence, you’re 1,000 steps ahead.

What are your wardrobe essentials?

Wardrobe essentials. I think, for winter, a long-sleeved dress, like the one I’m wearing. Long sleeve mini dress. And colour! I always see so much black and charcoal and brown and whatever. I think colour for winter. I’ve tried this season. I made a conscious effort in putting lots of colour and colour palettes.

What are we seeing for winter?

So this [colour] that’s a dark raspberry, maroon, but then I’ve also done lots of blush and ivory. So I just felt even though it’s winter, your personality should still shine through with some colour. So yes there’s lots of beautiful knits that are colourful, and always beautiful coats. I’ve done a beautiful tweed coat this season, which has got bold statement buttons on it, and it’s quite distressed and it’s quite beautiful. There’s always some things that are staple pieces but a little bit different.

How would you describe the RV girl?

I think polished in an undone way.

Where do you see you and your brand in five years time?

I hope we’ll have lots of international retail stores. I hope we’ll have beautiful Australian retail as well, and I hope the brand will continue on the way that it’s going. I want it to be internationally renowned, that’s for sure.

What sets you apart from other designers?

I think it’s our unique DNA. We know who our customer is, and I think it’s our product. Each season we try and refine it more and push it further and making sure when people see the collection, they know that’s a Rebecca Vallence dress.

Is your wardrobe filled with your own collection or do you wear other brands?

I only wear Rebecca Vallance.

Do you really?

Yeah I know. Well this is the thing. I think for me I design what I want to wear to some extent. So, there’s always everything that I want in a collection because it’s what I’m looking to wear. So yeah I only wear my own stuff, and obviously shoes and handbags is different.

Have you ever seen a piece of clothing that you’re like, “Oh, I wish I had designed that.”?

Not yet. I think there’s some incredible wedding gowns. I appreciate other designers, absolutely, but I think I’m so focused on what we’re doing as a brand that I’m kind of stuck looking at that.

You see so many designers that take inspiration from international designers. How do you steer clear from not making it look too trend orientated?

I think that when I launched the brand when I lived in London, I wanted it to have an international DNA and be authentic to who I was and we were as brand, and that’s, you know whether it’s going to Europe and sourcing out fabrications or working to develop that fabrications with the mills.

Will you ever face moving the business overseas?

I hope that if it becomes a problem, that the business is too big to be just in Australia, I hope to see it off in London and New York. Yeah for sure.

Is there anything coming up we need to know about?

I think for us at the moment, we’ve had the launch of the Strands store which is really exciting. They’re putting a tram in George Street [in Sydney] as well, so there will be lots of traffic coming through there. In addition, were launching Paddington, test it to see how it goes. I think we’ll just keep building out online. It’s doing very well at the moment, whether it’s in Australia or our global customer. I think it’s about doing what we’re doing well and refining it and pushing the collection further and further.

What I Wore: The Shirt Dress

17th April, 2018

A white shirt is an enduring wardrobe classic simply because it’s so versatile and looks great without having to do much at all. It always looks polished and classy. So it stands to reason that a white shirt dress would fall into the same category. There’s something about the structured style of a shirt dress that makes it look elegant but there’s also scope to have a bit more fun. This Rebecca Vallance shirt dress is one such style. Whilst it still maintains the button down, collared silhouette of a traditional shirt, it also features beautiful ruched, bell sleeves that give it a more fashion forward feel.

While a shirt dress can easily be quite casual or dressy, I chose to go down the slightly more dressed up route with this particular ensemble. Against crisp white, black and bold pops of colour work equally as well so I decided to go for both! In this instance I opted to wear my favourite, go-to Alaïa studded heels and a bright and fun, Poppy Lissiman clutch. The red metallic and the eye print really adds some energy to my overall look and is a definite talking point. Simple cat eye sunglasses with a vintage feel help round out my ensemble and give it a touch of glam.

What I Wore: Between the lines

6th February, 2018

During a recent trip to Melbourne I was in the mood to wear something quite feminine and bold so I ended up taking this Rebecca Vallance top and skirt combination with me. I love the nautical striped pattern on both, which gives a relaxed, resort wear vibe. The ruffled neckline and sleeve on the top give it a dramatic flair and gives the outfit a point of interest as the rest of the look is quite streamlined and simple. These were also the ideal pieces to take on a trip, as they’re able to be styled into two separate looks, giving me more options to choose from.

I wanted to dress this ensemble up a bit so I opted for my studded Alaïa heels, however I’ve found that it could work easily with a pair of sandals to give a slightly more casual feel.

My ever reliable Chanel bag always comes with me when I travel as it can go from a crossbody bag to a clutch quite easily, and in this instance it was the ideal bag to take to dinner. It’s small enough to carry my bits and pieces but not so big as to look cumbersome.

I never head out with a pair of sunglasses and for this outing, I wanted to stick to a classic black pair. However the charms on the sunglasses’ arms help give it a glam touch and is often a talking point as it’s such an unexpected detail.

What I Wore: Seeing Red

25th January, 2018

Luke and I attended a friend’s wedding over the weekend and it was a great excuse to take this top and skirt combination by Rebecca Vallance on an outing. I’m really loving wearing bright, bold colours for weddings as they’re always such fun, happy occasions that it seems fitting to have the accompanying colour palette to match!

This top and skirt worn together looks almost dress-like but I love the fact that I can wear them separately, in a more casual way, beyond this occasion which unfortunately is one of the downsides of having a dress specifically for an event–it’s often difficult to take them out again unless you’ve got another big function to go to.

With such a striking colour, I had to be careful with the complementary colours I chose otherwise I risked the entire outfit looking too overwhelming, so opted for gold. Metallic colours are often great paired with poppy shades as they contrast without competing and in this instance my favourite gold Gucci made for the perfect pairing. I kept my accessories in the same colour family and stuck to my favourite gold medallion, watch and bangle.

What I Wore: Gold Fever

9th January, 2018

Now that it’s officially the time of year in Australia where everyone’s in the mood to go out and enjoy a few cocktails and make the most of balmy summer nights I’m once again drawn to this Rebecca Vallance jumpsuit. I took it with me to Paris during my last holiday and loved that it felt so right for evenings out, making the most of the gorgeous weather. I’d usually associate gold lamé with more of a party look but the style of the jumpsuit, with its culotte style leg, square neckline and sweet waist tie keep it looking polished without losing any of its glam factor. The colour is so gorgeous that to continue the gilded theme I opted for my gold Gucci heels and favourite Eddie Borgo choker. To punctuate the head-to-toe metallic I went with a little black Dior bag with chain strap to carry all my essentials and leave my hands-free should I wish to enjoy a drink or two!

What I Wore: Nautical Vibes

14th November, 2017

Easy-to-wear dresses are a staple in my summer wardrobe, especially when I’m packing for a holiday. I always try to go for pieces that won’t crease in my suitcase. Knits are especially great, as they don’t require ironing if you fold them carefully.

I recently wore this Rebecca Vallance dress on my holiday in Greece. Anything with a blue and white combination always gives off nautical vibes. I was instantly drawn to the ruffles as they add a feminine feel.

For instant style points, I teamed the dress with my Rebecca De Ravenel earrings. Statement earrings have become my go-to accessory for adding a bit of colour and fun to my ensembles these days.

What I Wore: Statement Shirt Dress

29th August, 2017

There are times when a dress is all about the finishing touches and in the case of this Rebecca Vallance number the focal point is most certainly the triple bow detail. A long sleeved shirt dress is a favourite style of mine but I definitely couldn’t resist when I saw the ultra sweet bows on this particular piece. And when said bows are worked back against a gingham print it adds a playful vibe to the ensemble. The directional gathered sleeves help it from becoming too girly, whilst adding an interesting point of difference. Given the busy nature of the dress simplicity is key for the rest of the look. A simple pair of pointed slides by Nicholas Kirkwood and a chain strap bag continues the smart vibe of the outfit whilst the addition of a straw boater by Nerida Winter make it weekend ready.
