What to wear for a (long) day of shopping

9th October, 2018

When I’m in need of a retail fix, I know my outfit has to be comfortable and optimised for maximum shopping success. This means bye bye complicated buttons and ridiculous zippers, hello clothes I can slip on and off easily. I’m all about making sure that I can hit those change rooms with ease and don’t want to spend an eternity grappling with my outfit every time I want to try something on. Having the right outfit on speeds up your shopping experience because you’re not spending ages tying your laces, doing up buckles on your belt or buttons on your shirt. Keeping that in mind, here’s what to wear the next time you’re hitting the shops…

Shoes you can slip on and off

I think you’ve got to have comfortable shoes on so I always go in flats (ballet flats, slides or some cute loafers are good options). I avoid wearing sneakers as having to tie my shoelaces repeatedly when I’m trying on outfits during the day is less than ideal. If I want to keep trying stuff on I like to be able to slip my shoes on and off easily.

Nothing with buttons

You should be able to get dressed and undressed quite quickly so it’s probably best to leave that complicated shirt with too many buttons to count at home. Personally I like wearing dresses because I find them easy to take on and off so it speeds up my time in the change rooms. But if dresses aren’t your thing go for something that you can slip in and out of in a matter of seconds—think a tee with bottoms with an elasticated waist.

Avoid light colours

When you’re trying things on multiple times in a day, slipping your clothes on and off can mean you risk your makeup rubbing off on your clothes. This is why I tend to leave any light garments at home if I’ve got a marathon shopping session ahead of me. Also you never know what kind of change room you might encounter and the last thing you want is having to dump pristine white clothes on a dirty or dusty floor.

A hands-free bag

Be sure to bring a bag that leaves your hands free to skim through the racks. Aim for something with a strap that you can easily throw over your shoulder. The last thing you want to do is have to juggle a bag on top of everything else. After all the more you’re able to browse the better chance of shopping success!

Easy outfit go-to: the co-ord set

5th October, 2018

Want to look polished without really trying? Then a co-ord set will quickly become a firm favourite. It’s an outfit that gives an air of polish with its perfectly co-ordinated top and bottom. It just screams pulled together. And it’s also one of the easiest things you can wear. No further consideration needs to be given to what to pair with a particular pant or skirt, all the hard work has been done for you. And if you want to change things up you a bit, a set can be split into separates, doubling their wear.

I’ve become a huge fan of late. My love of suiting further extending into everything from a matching shirt and skirt to a wrap jacket with a relaxed pant. When I need to get out the door fast it’s the one thing I turn to that’s guaranteed to have me looking sleek and chic without any fuss.

The great thing about this trend is that it works for casual day wear, office attire to a special event. There’s a two-piece ensemble to suit virtually every occasion and it’s quickly becoming a no-brainer solution to most outfit dilemmas. It’s the easiest shortcut to looking polished you can have in your wardrobe.

Shop my pick of co-ordinated sets below…
MSGM leopard print satin skirt and shirt

You’re guaranteed to steal the show with this bold and bright animal print number.

Miguelina wide-leg pant and crop top

A crop top can be a bit daunting to wear but paired back with a wide leg pant it becomes a little more wearable. Bonus points for the gorgeous dusty pink colour.

Koché leopard print pant and blazer

Make a statement in this thoroughly modern and daring take on traditional suiting.

Sister Jane button up shirt and skirt

With its checked print and sweet finishes this is a feminine way to wear a matching set.

Glamorous tweed jacket and mini skirt

A little Clueless-esque, this jacket and skirt is a preppy take on the co-ord trend.

Wild Honey zip front pants and jacket

A cute cropped pant paired with its co-ordinating jacket is a great go-to for days at the office or an important event.

ASOS Design boucle cropped jacket and shorts

Shorts look decidedly grown up when styled with a cropped jacket, even more so in a classic houndstooth pattern.

Wild Honey blazer and skirt

A double breasted blazer paired with an asymmetric skirt is a contemporary iteration of traditional suiting.

Glamorous wrap front top and skirt

This is a sophisticated pairing that I could definitely see as a polished look for an evening event.

Miguelina wide leg pant and tie front top

The gorgeous tropical pattern and tie front top make this a compulsory purchase if you’re about to escape on an island holiday.

Sies Marjan satin blazer and straight leg pant

Pink is one of the biggest colour trends right now and when it’s in the form of a great co-ord such as this, you definitely need to make it yours.

Ports 1961 cropped bandeau top and skirt

Consider for your next event. A top and skirt make for a great alternative to your usual go-to dress.

7 types of shoes that every woman should own

29th September, 2018

When I’m sometimes helping friends do a wardrobe revamp they always ask me about which shoes they need to cull and which shoes they need to add to their collection. I’m the first to admit that I’ve managed to accumulate a number of shoes in my time, all of which I love for various reasons, however there are certain shoes in my closet that I know I definitely couldn’t live without. These are the shoes that have got me through many occasions and I turn to time and time again. This is why I inevitably always give my girlfriends the same list of  shoes — this is the footwear that I guarantee will be used often and will serve you season after season.

So, what’s on the list? These 7 shoes will get you through all kinds of occasions and will make putting a stylish outfit together just that little bit easier.

Black slimline heels

I’ve worn these heels to black tie functions, to work events, to weddings, to social occasions… the list goes on. This is why I think every woman should own a pair of simple black slimline heels as they will become a go-to on more than one occasion.

A black and nude pump

This is the workhorse shoe of my wardrobe. I find I’ll wear a black pump with everything from a cocktail dress to work attire. I love a pointy toed black pump in suede or leather. (Just be sure to waterproof them to help with their longevity.)

Sometimes a black pump will look too harsh with certain clothing so a shoe in a nude colour is a great alternative. You’ll find this shoe is just as versatile as a black pump and will work back with so many different items from your wardrobe.

_DSC9150

Black high heeled boots

Now that winter is on its way make it your mission to find a good pair of black high heeled boots. The right pair of black boots will last you season after season and you’ll wonder how you ever survived winter without them.

A comfy pair of flat shoes

For those days when you’re running around and just need to be comfortable, a pair of ballet flats is an essential (if you prefer a loafer they also fall into the same category). I have a pair of black ballet flats that I’ve had for years and a pair of Gucci loafers that are still in high rotation. They’re my go-to shoes when comfort is key. You don’t necessarily have to go for a neutral either, you can have some fun with flats and experiment with different prints or colours.

A statement shoe

Every girl should have a pair of show-stopping heels that make an outfit. I love an animal print myself (leopard especially) however you could also go for a metallic colour or something with really interesting detail. The only aim should be is that they’re bold and definitely stand out from the crowd.

Sneakers

These have become almost as crucial to my wardrobe as my heels as I spend so much of my time running around, comfort is key. Plus sneakers as just so versatile. From my off duty wardrobe to spending a day at the office, my sneakers are front and centre. I definitely think a pair of classic white sneakers is a must.

6 ways to wear a pleated skirt this week

4th August, 2018

14_10_14_Sofia_Berlin_537

I’m quite fond of wearing skirts on days where I’m after a look that’s ultra feminine which is how I’ve stumbled across the versatility of a pleated skirt. They’re ultra wearable as they can be paired with so many different top styles whether it’s a t-shirt or a button down shirt or cami meaning you can create multiple looks out of one skirt.

A pleated skirt’s soft, floaty effect is offset by its crisp knife pleats which makes it ideal to dress up or down. It can be worn for a day at the office just as easily as a day out with the girls. A knee length or midi length skirt is flattering and can easily work back with heels, flats or sandals. This trend is understated and polished and is right on trend with this season’s feminine silhouettes.

coloured pleated skirt

A pleated skirt in a fun vibrant hue can instantly give an outfit a striking point of difference. The bubble gum hue of this skirt works well with the more subdued colours of the rest of the outfit—the black crop top, bag, sunglasses and pointy pumps help balance the look.

Clochet_Outfit_Streetstyle_zara_white_pleated_skirt_studio_cropped_top_-4

You can’t go wrong with anything in a crisp white – especially when you work it back with black. The Celine black trio bag and black textured top help add the finishing touches to this monochrome outfit.

tumblr_nkue3nBDEc1qcv7buo1_1280

The more relaxed pleating on this skirt work well with the grid pattern and the grey hue. Adding a bright sunny yellow bag and block sandals give this 50s inspired look a modern edge.

white-black-skirt

A pleated black skirt can be worn virtually a million and one ways. It’s a style staple. Team it with a crisp button down shirt and add a statement heel to take it from conservative to contemporary. You could also team it with a cami or a simple white tee and it would work equally as well.

14_10_14_Sofia_Berlin_395

This is great outfit option for trans-seasonal dressing. Add a lightweight jumper and a pair of pumps for those days when the weather’s still slightly chilly. Working your skirt back with a top in the same tonal family helps give it a polished edge.

43c325bd8d5441622e8c8999cba0ec08

You don’t always have to opt for a knee length or midi length skirt. A pleated maxi skirt in a neutral tone can work well as an alternative to a dress for an occasion that requires slightly more polish. Try adding interesting accessories such as a panama hat for more casual events.

Tell me—What do you think of the pleated skirt trend?

Reader Question: What are your tips for travelling light?

28th July, 2018

flatlay_2

Welcome to my first ever reader Q&A! I tend to be thrown a fashion question or two quite regularly whether it by on social media, at an event or right here on this very blog so I thought I would start featuring my answers here in case it’s something another reader has also been wanting to ask. If you’ve got a question you’ve been dying to know the answer to feel free to post other questions in the comments section, send me a Facebook message or write on my wall, comment on my Instagram or send me a tweet. The more questions the better!

Hi Kate,

Any ideas please for packing to travel overseas. I am going to Ireland, Scotland and Denmark in July and would love to get an idea of basic mix and match and practical travel clothes I will wear rather than have excess luggage.

Kind regards, Robyn

You’ve come to the right place, Robyn! I’ve become become quite good at taking the bare minimum when I’m travelling. I used to pack so much every time I went away and my thought process would usually go something like this: “Oh I love this dress, I’ve never worn it in Sydney but I might wear it overseas!” and just apply the same logic to pretty much everything in my wardrobe. And let’s face it, the reality is, if I would never wear it in Sydney, why would I wear it overseas? These days I limit myself to one piece of luggage when I’m travelling (even tinier if it’s just a quick trip interstate) and make sure I take a tight edit of clothing. Here’s how I do it:

Bring separates

Packing separates means you can get multiple looks out of each item. Every separate you take you should ensure that not only can you get multiple wears out of it, but that you can also easily dress it up or down. For example I’ll always take a little black skirt that I can dress up at night with a black singlet top or wear casually during the day with a tee or singlet and sneakers. I normally take one little black skirt, maybe a longer skirt whether it’s a midi or maxi skirt and some shorts. I’ll always take white t-shirts, I’ll always take a black singlet top, and even if it’s summer you’ll still need a little cardigan just in case it gets cold. So the cardigan I wear on the plane is the cardigan I’ll wear throughout the trip. Usually I’ll take a cardi in black is it will go with a lot of outfits.

Limit shoes

Fact: shoes are heavy when you have multiple pairs on your hands. Don’t go nuts in the shoe department when you travel. I’ll always take a black pair of heels, they might not be my favourite heels at the time but they’ll go with everything. And usually they’re the only heels I will bring. When I went to Switzerland with my family over Christmas one year it was black tie events each night and I only had one pair of heels with me that I knew I would be able to wear to every single event. Also if you’re heading to Europe you’ll encounter plenty of cobblestoned streets which are quite romantic and lovely to stroll along but are wildly inappropriate for walking on in heels. For this very reason make sure you bring a pair of wedges. I go to Taormina in Italy a lot and I know I wouldn’t be able to survive a trip (and most likely end up with a broken ankle) without wedges.

I always take flats with me like sandals and sneakers. I’ll take sandals for the beach and Adidas sneakers or Nikes that I can wear casually or on a power walk. But I always keep flats to a minimum and make sure that they work with everything that I’m bringing.

Bring a multipurpose bag

I always bring a tiny Chanel cross body bag that I can wear during the day and then at night I can tuck the chain in and use it as a clutch. If you decide to take something with you it should always serve more than one purpose. I’ll often have a bigger bag for the plane which can fit my computer but I’ll make sure that bag is the bag I’ll use as a beach bag or a baby bag during the trip. There’s no need to bring a million different bags.

Do laundry

Don’t be one of those people who doesn’t wash clothes during the trip! Just take a small ziploc bag of detergent with you in your suitcase so you can easily wash things like underwear in your hotel room. Don’t bring 100 pairs of socks and underwear because you don’t want to wash. That’s precious suitcase space all those superfluous underpants are taking up!

Make accessories multitask

Take a variety of different accessories as they don’t take up too much room but they’re really great for changing your outfit. One thing I always take is a black sarong because I can wear it as a scarf and also wear it as a cover up at the beach or as a towel if I don’t have one with me. Plus if I’m going sightseeing to places such as a church where I might need to cover up my shoulders or need a scarf around my head, a sarong can always be used for that too.

Be ruthless

You don’t need multiple options for the one type of clothing. You have to decide and choose to bring only one. So for example I always limit myself to one pair of jeans. If I bring a pair of white jeans then I don’t take blue jeans. Just stick to one pair. And only ever take one swimsuit.

Do a trial run

I will lay some clothes out a week before and I will slowly take things away during the week. By the end of the week I’ll have a pretty limited number of outfits but I know they all work together to form a good capsule wardrobe.

Have a two-occasion minimum

While separates are great you can take summer dresses or a playsuit too but just make sure that you can wear it at night with heels or a statement necklace. Or if you bring a maxi dress you can wear it to the beach but also in the evening if you’re going out to dinner. Make sure you look at something and ask yourself how many times can your wear it and in how many different ways? You should always be able to come up with a minimum of two occasions in which you will be able to wear it during your trip.

If you follow the above tips you should be well on your way to being able to pack light so that you’ve got plenty of space to bring home all those holiday mementos. Or just shop a lot.

Fashion, What I Wore

What I Wore: Cool Blue

10th April, 2018

Always elegant and sleek, navy is one of those versatile, reliable hues that will always equate to a chic look whenever you wear it. It’s probably one of the reasons why it features quite prominently in my wardrobe. It’s even better when the look is anchored in quality pieces at a reasonable price. Case in point: this lightweight Uniqlo sweater is cashmere and it retails for significantly less than what you’d expect to pay for such a piece. One hundred per cent cashmere! And the great thing about Uniqlo is that they stock an extensive range of colours so you’re pretty much guaranteed to find the ideal hue. I opted for navy simple because it would seamlessly work back with most pieces I own.

I recently spoke about my love of wide leg pants so you can imagine why I couldn’t pass up this high waisted style, also from Uniqlo. I really love the tie-up ribbon feature and the knife pleats at the front which give them a sophisticated touch. I’ll easily be able to add this to my work wardrobe repertoire and can easily switch up how I wear them simply be swapping to different style tops.

To keep the look tonal I decided to pair it with my navy Bulgari top handle bag and my Le Specs sunglasses with coloured blue lenses. The cool tones complemented my ensemble and helped tie the whole outfit together.

Are you into wide leg pants? Because you should be. And here’s why

8th April, 2018

If you’ve been faithful to formfitting pants without ever having tried their voluminous counterparts then you don’t know what you’re missing out on. Wide leg pants are flattering on virtually everyone. Tall, petite, curvy, boyish—whatever your body type you can make them work for you. They’re also versatile and can look perfect as an off duty look when paired with a simple white tee or dressed up with a cami or silk blouse. You can wear them to work, on the weekend, to dinner or to brunch so you’ll definitely get plenty of use out of them and won’t regret investing in a pair. Also, a pair of wide leg pants just looks polished and chic so it’s ideal if you want an easy shortcut to looking like you spent a few hours styling yourself when really you rushed out the door in five minutes. If you want to try out this look, remember to…

Make sure they’re the perfect length

When you try on a pair of wide leg pants make sure that the hem isn’t dragging on the ground. You shouldn’t have a pool of fabric at your ankles. Instead make sure that the hem is ever so slightly off the ground and that you can see your shoes peeking through. Alternatively if you want to wear them cropped then get them hemmed to the ankle.

Decide on the shoes you’ll pair them with

This brings me to the next crucial thing to remember with wide leg pants: your shoes. You can’t really go from heels to flats with wide leg pants as the hem will be all wrong. So think of where you’re most likely to wear your pants and the type of footwear you’ll be pairing them with and have them hemmed accordingly. The exception to this is if you’re choosing to wear your pants cropped, in which case you have a bit more freedom to switch up your shoes.

Avoid volume up top

As you’re dealing with a lot of fabric on your bottom half already, it’s important to keep your top quite streamlined for balance. A button down shirt, a lightweight sweater, a t-shirt or a cami are all great options. A top with bell sleeves for example might not make for the best pairing as you’re going to have a lot of loose, flowy fabric up top too.

Have fun

Whilst a pair of white wide leg pants looks fresh and navy or black looks forever chic don’t overlook prints. A playful polka dot or a classic stripe can look amazing and really makes a statement.

What do you think of this trend? Will you wear it?

6 ways with white sneakers

11th March, 2018

Oh white sneakers, thank you for making comfortable footwear so achingly chic. I’ve embraced the white sneakers trend for a few years now as they’re just so unbelievably wearable. I have a few different styles in my closet because they are such an easy go-to on days when I need to look pulled together but still need to be able to run around quite easily. I usually jump between my different pairs but I can’t go past Gucci’s Ace style. An elevated designer sneaker just makes any off duty look feel super luxe.

Whether you’re wearing old school Adidas, modern Nikes, classic Supergas or trusty Converse sneakers, there’s no doubt that you can wear white sneakers in so many different ways. They’re ideal to wear for a busy weekend spent out and about or a casual lunch with the girls, the only issue is deciding which style to wear! If you’re going to jump on board this trend, here are 6 ways to make it work with your wardrobe.

people-and-styles-white-sneakers-trainers-spring-trend1

This is a great trans-seasonal look as we head into the cooler months. White sneakers worn back with a classic look such as a jumper and skirt in neutral colours is casual chic at its best. Love the slight 70s feel to this outfit.

people-and-styles-white-sneakers-trainers-spring-trend4

A simple dress is an easy outfit option when you’re having a wardrobe dilemma. A knitted dress works well with a pair of perfectly white sneakers and has a relaxed elegance about it. If you want an easy shortcut for changing the look and feel of a slightly more glam dress just add a pair of white sneakers and it instantly looks suitable for day.

people-and-styles-white-sneakers-trainers-spring-trend

The great thing about white sneakers? They’re a neutral colour so they go with pretty much anything in your wardrobe and that includes all the colours of the denim rainbow.

05-fashion-transition-from-sneakers-to-heels-how-to-it-mexican-blogger-genesis-serapio-fall-effortless-look-blazer-white-zara-sneakers-mexico-city

While coloured jeans are great, you can’t beat a pair of classic blue jeans. This look works best with jeans that are fitted slightly cropped at the ankle.

sneaker-street-style-fashion-blogger-black-sneakers-white-sole-are-the-new-sneaker-street-style-trend-the-sneaker-street-style-strut

I love an all white outfit; it looks so fresh and modern. A long midi skirt can be quite dressy but worn with sneakers it can easily become a great casual look. Midriff-baring optional!

d5456e587523784a7f582eb349c510bdIf you want to mix up your usual dress and sandals combination, swap out your sandals for a pair of white sneakers instead. It gives a dress a slightly more modern edge.
