Spring racing looks for every big race day

26th October, 2019

Whether you’re attending Derby Day, Oaks Day or Melbourne Cup, half the fun is being able to pull together a beautiful outfit. I’ve been going to the races for years and it’s still such a thrill being able to play with different looks to suit every big event during spring carnival.

I’ve been lucky enough to work with Net-a-Porter during this time for the last few years, and it’s allowed me to wear some truly beautiful pieces and has given me so much fashion inspo along the way. The best thing about attending the races is the fact it’s the perfect opportunity to push a few fashion boundaries, try new trends and of course, enjoy getting dolled up.

If you’ve got a date with the races here are a few looks that will have you totally owning every single dress code.

Monochrome

Black and white is a must for Derby Day. It’s always such an elegant day trackside, as there’s a sea of crisp white looks or ultra chic black outfits (or a mix of the two hues) that takes the fashion next-level. If you’re working with a monochrome colour palette definitely don’t shy away from playing with textures whether it be embellishments or fabrication, embracing prints and adding elegant accessories such as pearls, which are hugely on trend at the moment.

A riot of colour

Key dates on the spring racing calendar such as Melbourne Cup and Oaks Day are the perfect time to embrace plenty of colour. Think punchy hues such as pinks and oranges, aquas and purples which makes both days a visual feast. When wearing colour it’s also a good time to let your outfit be the focal point and weave through accessories that are striking, yet slightly more subdued to allow your ensemble to shine. However it’s also the perfect opportunity to once again play with textures— think feathers, satin and gorgeous laser cut pieces.

What I Wore: Moments in Monochrome

18th October, 2019

Monochrome looks are always a no-brainer. It’s always a sleek, sophisticated colour palette that’s a shortcut to a polished look. If I want a failsafe look that’s guaranteed to look on point it would have to feature black or white. I love playing with both shades, mixing and matching or wearing one hue from head to toe. It’s impactful and chic all at the same time.

I recently worked with Witchery on a few must-have spring looks from their new October Limited Edition collection and found some gorgeous pieces that will certainly fit the bill…

Look 1:

I love jumpsuits. They’re a great shortcut to a chic look and worked back with simple black accessories, it’s perfect for any dressy event at this time of year. A wide brimmed black straw hat and a structured top handle bag complement the look whilst still holding their own. Also it’s a great idea to go for comfortable shoes at any event where you know you’ll be milling around on your feet the entire time and I love the fact the black shoes feature a block heel.

Shop the Look:

Jumpsuit: Winks Knit Jumpsuit, Witchery

Hat: Verona Woven Sunhat, Witchery

Bag: Fleur Box Bag, Witchery

Shoes: Riley Heel, Witchery

Look 2:

A pair of wide leg pants looks chic and this pair with its silver polka dots is both playful and stylish. I always love a print that pops. Teamed with a black tank, it allows the pants to take centre stage. Paired with a sweet straw hat with bow detail and a structured top handle bag, these separates work beautifully together but can be worn apart allowing you to get multiple uses from just two garments.

Shop the look:

Top: Rosa Square Neck Knit Tank, Witchery

Pants: Whinney Pant, Witchery

Hat: Florence Woven Sunhat, Witchery

Bag: Fleur Box Bag, Witchery

Shoes: Riley Heel, Witchery

Look 3:

Suiting is a huge trend right now and this particular set with its patterned shorts and blazer is a fun option. In this instance I wanted to work a few black pieces into the mix to provide some contrast and the black headband is right on trend. Paired with a classic bag and heels, it’s a look that’s sophisticated and a little bit different. For a light and airy spring look that’s also polished, this is a great go-to to keep in mind.

6 big spring racing trends that you need to know

17th October, 2019

Are you gearing up for Melbourne Cup? Prepping your look for Derby Day? If you’re headed to any of the key racing events during spring racing then you’re no doubt considering your look. From headwear to shoes, accessories and the outfit itself, it can be hard to figure out what to wear that’s on trend, yet sticks to the specific dress code.

I’ve got a number of events to attend, not to mention my reporting commitments for 7 Racing, which means I have plenty of outfits to lock in and I have to be on top of what’s trending. This season there’s plenty of key trends to try and I’m embracing a number of them throughout the next few weeks. Here are a few of the big ones to look out for…

A sharp skirt suit is a great option for spring racing

Sharp suiting

Traditional suiting is always a failsafe but the best part of what’s on offer this season is that it’s being done in a fresh, modern way. There’s a suit iteration that will work according to every taste, budget and dress code.

I’m a big fan of bold colours when it comes to a power suit, particularly pink which is fun and playful but so contemporary at the same time. Also look out for interesting finishing touches such as contrasting lapels and statement shoulders which ensure that your suit makes an impact. If you want to add a touch of glam, embrace a little satin which can take your suit next-level.

Also think beyond the traditional pants and jacket combination. You can go for a skirt or shorts to change up the look and give it a fresh spin.

Mini accessories

The mini bag is such a huge trend and its diminutive presence will be seen everywhere during spring racing season. You can do a little bag that will hold your main essentials or alternatively you can go super tiny like this and really downsize what you carry with you.

Who else loves an 80s puffed sleeve?

80s revival

The 80s are back! This time around we’re embracing the key silhouettes from the decade including puffed shoulders, high necklines, cinched in waists and the bell sleeve. As far as accessories go embrace a little glam by adding a diamond belt to your look, whilst padded headbands are the perfect way to embrace the trend and tick the headwear box at the same time.

Modern millinery

Hats will always be in but we are seeing headwear runway trends also filter into racing dressing now. Hair accessories are huge at the moment and is one way to tick the headwear box in a different way. Think beautiful hair clips, bows, anything with pearl embellishments and a polished headband. If you’re considering wearing clips, you can double the impact by wearing two at the same time. It gives the look something extra and modernises it.

Working a pink and yellow colour palette into my look

Bold Colours

Don’t be afraid to turn up the saturation during spring racing and embrace big, bold colours. You can opt for vibrant shades of orange, yellow or gold which can all brighten up any look. Alternatively adopt rich hues of purple and pink to lift an ensemble and instantly make it pop.

Longer hemlines

I’ve always erred on the side of conservative when it comes to outfits for the races and this year it’s made even easier by the popularity of longer hemlines. If you’re thinking of dresses or skirts for spring racing, go for a maxi or midi style to look on trend whilst ensuring that you respect the dress code at the same time. Win-win.

What’s on my shopping wish list

11th October, 2019

My shopping wish list this month is a little bit of everything—a mixture of wardrobe staples, interesting accessories and fun pieces in bold colours. I think the combination of styling race day looks and building up my spring/summer wardrobe, along with considering a few new additions for the festive season has taken me in all different directions and I’ve discovered a few beauties along the way.

Double-Breasted Satin-Trimmed Wool-Blend Twill Blazer, Givenchy

I have a soft spot for black blazers and as such I’m always looking out for one to add to my collection. I love this Givenchy blazer for the double breasted cut, the satin lapel and the flattering nipped in waist. A definite winner.

Hexagon-Frame Acetate Sunglasses, Loewe

Sunglasses in interesting, not so common shapes always catch my eye. I love this for the hexagon shape — classic but edgy.

Striped Ribbed-Knit Midi Dress, Kenzo

I can’t look past the fun colours of this knitted dress. Such a great option for spring and perfect to wear with sneakers for casual days but it can easily be dressed up with flats or ankle boots when I want to look a little more dressed up.

Iside Micro Textured-Leather Tote, Valextra

White accessories are perfect as they’re so versatile and can work back with multiple pieces. I love the old school, elegant feel of this style.

Rexy Ruffled Lamé Mini Dress, Maje

This mini dress is a touch disco and a whole lot of fun and I can see us attending many an event together. Such a gorgeous colour too.

Alloy Cropped Ribbed Stretch-Knit Top, The Range

Cropped tops might seem a bit scary to wear on their own but I think they work beautifully with a high waisted pant. You still get all the coverage and the silhouette looks fresh and modern.

Hexagon-frame acetate sunglasses, Loewe

Fashion rule to live by: when you really love something considering getting it in all colours. These sunnies in brown is also amazing.

Crystal-embellished Satin Pumps, Miu Miu

These pumps are a little extra and I love them for it. The crystal embellishments and the pink satin work together to create a little shoe magic.

Cropped Canvas-Trimmed Cotton-Jersey Bustier Top, Dion Lee

A sleek top that certainly makes a statement. This will be a great little addition to my wardrobe as we start to head into party season.

Bernadette Cady and Embroidered Tulle Jumpsuit, Saloni

I’m a huge fan of jumpsuits and this is one has a classic silhouette that is elevated by elegant finishes, particularly the embroidered tulle sleeves.

Furoshiki Mini Leather Tote, The Sant

We tend to have bags that fall into certain families, whether it’s a tote, a clutch or crossbody bag which is why I love this style—it’s so different to the styles we often see. The handles, the structure, the beautiful silhouette…it’s such an interesting piece.

Belissa 100 Feather-Trimmed Suede Sandals, Jimmy Choo

Elegant heels are a must for the festive season and this style, with its feathered trim is all kinds of gorgeous.

Arc Two-Tone Lizard-Effect Leather Tote, Rejina PYO

I’m all for a soft, roomy tote of the buttery leather variety but I can’t go past the sleek silhouette of this particular Rejina Pyo number. It’s just so polished.

Square-Frame Marbled Acetate Sunglasses, Loewe

There’s scope for summer sunglasses to be a little more bold, and a little more fun, and this marbled pair will make the ideal finishing touch to many a warm weather look.

Frayed Linen Hairclip, Lelet, NY

Relaxed linen is made for this time of year and as a hair accessory, it makes for a sweet touch to any ‘do.

Faux Leather Midi Skirt, Stella Mccartney

I often wear leather pieces in black but I’m definitely all for dabbling in a little colour when a vibrant yellow leather skirt like this is involved. It’s the very definition of sunshine!

A classic trench is perfect for taking you through trans-seasonal weather but take note of the 90s inspired accessories. A small shoulder bag and open-toe sandals are both musts this season.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B2S7UPBnzRE/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

When it comes to dresses, the long sleeved variety is the ideal thing to take you through changing temperatures. Choose one in a striking print and you’ll have an outfit that pretty much carries itself.

Experiment with different lengths when it comes to denim shorts this season. A pair of mid length shorts makes for a refreshing change to the shorter styles we’ve been seeing season after season.

An all white ensemble is a fashion no-brainer—sleek, stylish and goes well against a golden (faux) tan so it’s made for this time of year. Work different necklines such as a one shoulder or off the shoulder style for a fresh look and team it back with pants.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B3KujeupX4A/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

Want a way to revamp a few of your existing blazers? Belt it! You’ll instantly change the silhouette and make it look on trend, whilst giving yourself an ultra flattering waistline.

Double denim for the win. Work similar washes against each other and it brings cohesion to the entire look. A cropped jacket works well against a high waisted pant.

These culottes are a great go-to look for the summer—polished, sleek and with a modern sensibility. This is also a great example of challenging how we wear leather— it can often go beyond just the old faithful option of a leather jacket.

If you’re worried wide leg pants will swamp your frame try them in a cropped length. They look beautiful paired with a blouse and heels, and don’t be afraid to add a bright pop of colour.

It’s all about playing with proportions this season. If you want to dip your toe into the trend, try a voluminous sleeve.

A crisp white shirt is a forever staple but this season why not accentuate it with a few punchy accessories? A bold headband or daring footwear works beautifully to offset its classic feel.

The cardigan but make it sexy. That’s right this staple has had a bit of a glow up simply by buttoning it up and exposing a little shoulder. Genius.

Working with a single colour in your outfit can make for a standout look. In this instance working one block hue with a pattern distills the shade into something that’s striking without being overwhelming.

Blazers are a wardrobe must but why not mix it up by opting for one in a vibrant colour and adding it to your style repertoire? It’s an easy way to update most looks and always looks polished.

Beige and white paired together is a match made in heaven. It’s sharp, chic and always has a classic feel. It’s a great colour palette to turn to when you want a failsafe look.

We’ve still got another month of winter yet so make the most of it by dressing up your outfits with a bold, patterned coat. It’s an easy shortcut to refreshing old favourites.

A little satin and a co-ord set is an easy shortcut for when you want a look that’s effortlessly stylish. Also take note: wearing the same hue from top to bottom is a great way to elongate the body.

https://www.instagram.com/p/ByxD-GJpTf0/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

We’ll be making our way into trans-seasonal dressing again and one way to get through it is to do a long sleeved dress with boots. It’s a look that can easily take you from warm to cool and back again with ease.

If you haven’t yet got an animal print piece in your wardrobe make a point of doing so because it can surprisingly work as a neutral. It’s versatile in that it can be dressed up or down and adds a punchy touch to a look.

The midi skirt is one piece that can easily be switched up depending on what you pair it with. Keep it casual with a sweater and sneakers, but dress it up with a cami and slides. Either way, it’s a definite style chameleon.

Best Buys Under $100

One of the great things right now is that there are plenty of great pieces to be found that don’t cost a fortune. From chain stores and their reasonably priced offerings to half yearly sales, it’s totally possible to get yourself some on trend pieces without your wallet looking a little worse for wear.

This month I’ve found some amazing accessories that can instantly elevate an outfit. They look luxe but no one need ever know they’re currently on sale for just under $68.

What’s on my shopping wish list this month

14th June, 2019

I am heading off to Daydream Island for a family holiday which has got me in a serious resort wear vibe. And whilst it’s been fun playing with lots of layering now that winter’s here, I’ve always got a soft spot for easy breezy summer dressing. There’s just something about effortless, laidback looks that’s always so great to shop for. So here’s a peek at what I’ve been wanting to snap up for my trip—and for a head start on my summer wardrobe.

Bare Leather Sandals, The Row

These shoes are everywhere at the moment and I’ve been stuck for which colour to get. I’m leaning towards this beautiful pink shade to add a hint of playfulness to a look. And let’s face it, a comfy heel is always a good idea.

Solitaire Belted Ribbed Seersucker Swimsuit, Hunza G

I am really loving one piece swimsuits and this brand does some gorgeous seersucker styles which look classic and modern. Also show me swimwear with a cute belt and I’m there.

Penny Earrings, Amber Sceats

These shell earrings are perfect for my holiday. I think they’re quite fun and are just the thing to dress up a day look or add an element of interest for an after dark outfit.

Outta Love Sunglasses, Le Specs

You know I’ve got a weak spot for great sunglasses and this oval pair by Le Specs are an affordable way to accessorise a summery look.

Paula’s Ibiza Medium Leather-Trimmed Woven Raffia Tote, Loewe

Straw bags are very much having a moment and are made for beach holidays. Love the size and the interesting asymmetrical handle of this particular piece.

Mika off-the-shoulder Tencel and Linen-Blend Midi Dress, Mara Hoffman

Off the shoulder styles are super flattering so I’m always drawn to them whenever I’m trying to pull together a holiday wardrobe. Love the cut and voluminous sleeves on this particular dress. I can see myself wearing this from the beach to the bar.

After Fil Coupe Silk-Blend Georgette Pareo, Eres

Wrap skirts are perfect for vacation wear and I love how sophisticated this particular piece is. The elegant draping and moss green shade work beautifully together and would be a dream with a cami or even a relaxed tee.

Honour Belted Linen Wide-Leg Pants, Zimmermann

Wide leg pants are just the right vibe for resort wear. I love anything in a crisp white when it comes to great beach attire and linen is made for days spent enjoying the sun.

Verity Cropped Grosgrain-trimmed Floral Print Linen Top, Zimmermann

The sleeves, the print, the cut—I love it all! This is great piece that can be worn with the simplest of items whether its denim or a neutral pant and work together to create a look that has impact.

12 Insta-outfit ideas to steal

3rd June, 2019

With winter officially here it’s time to into cosy dressing mode. I love winter because it’s a great opportunity to play with lots of layering along with mixing and matching textures. Also there’s plenty of accessories to play with. From a great pair of ankle boots to a beautiful scarf and a luxe shoulder bag, there are so many ways to add an interesting element to a look. And if winter’s not your thing and you’re stuck for ideas on what to wear, never fear because these outfits are sure to inspire.

Denim is a girl’s best friend but it can sometimes look a little too casual. Enter a statement jacket. Fringing, patterns, embellishment… as long as the jacket is a little bit extra it can turn a pair of jeans into something special.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BxYM3Tbh0oL/

Extend the wear of your favourite denim skirt by pairing it with sheer stockings a la Brooke Testoni. Simply pair with a punchy shirt and heels and you’ve got yourself a chic winter look.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bvt9ZHsgvbB/

Suede is one of those luxe textures that’s made for winter. A pair of suede boots is an easy way to incorporate it into a look but you could also opt for a beautiful coat or a skirt.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bx7cCubIAV4/

Update your denim wardrobe this season with a pair of cropped wide leg jeans. It’s a fun alternative to a skinny leg style and it works beautifully with a great pair of flats.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bxi_ojug7SV/

Knits are without a doubt a winter wardrobe staple so this season why not mix it up by working a few interesting styles into your repertoire? A crossover ballerina style jumper such as this is a versatile option for day or night.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BtBrtC-Ats2/

Have a little fun with your winter coat and look for one that incorporates texture. A fluffy coat such as this is an effective way to dial up the impact of any outfit.

If you don’t have a classic trench in your wardrobe yet you don’t know what you’re missing out on. It’s a versatile style staple that will instantly add a sophisticated touch to any ensemble.

https://www.instagram.com/p/ByDYGMbHMdP/

I’m all for a blazer, and this season I’m loving one in a fun vibrant shade. This bubblegum pink number is ideal for elevating an outfit.

Who says your skirts have to go into hibernation? Work it with a button down skirt and boots and you’ve got yourself a seriously sophisticated look for work or play.

Playing with earthy shades this season is must. A beautiful rust colour worked back with beige is one way to do this colour palette in an on trend way.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BviOVX5BbHW/

What’s winter if you don’t have at least one all black ensemble? Whilst it’s a shortcut to looking chic, wearing it from head to toe can sometimes look a little flat. Add some great accessories such as crossbody bag or a headband to give it a little lift.

A printed skirt is a great outfit option no matter that time of year. You can easily change the look and feel of this ensemble by switching out a shirt for a tee and vice versa. Add a jacket and you’re done.
